Middlesbrough sign Juninho Middlesbrough have finally completed the signing of Juninho on a four-year contract from Atletico Madrid. The clubs agreed a fee three weeks ago but the deal foundered over the player's personal terms. However, after weekds of intensive negotiations, the two parties eventually agreed a deal and subject to passing a medical, Juninho will return to Middlesbrough for the third time. A statement from the club read: "Middlesbrough Football Club are delighted to announce they agreed personal terms with Juninho having already agreed a fee with Athletico Madrid. "The club has agreed a four-year contract, subject to the player passing a medical and obtaining a work permit from the Department of Employment.

Juninho snubs Middlesbrough offer Brazil World Cup winner Juninho has rejected the opportunity of joining Middlesbrough for the third time in his career, after failing to agree personal terms with the club. "I came here for talks but there has been no deal," said Osvaldo Giroldo, the player's father, who was acting on Juninho's behalf. "The offer they have made is not what we wanted and I am returning to Brazil." Juninho had been expected to return to Teesside - where he became arguably the most popular player in Middlesbrough's history during two previous spells between 1996 and 2000 - after the clubs agreed a fee for the player last week.

Brazilian Star Juninho encourages play on smaller fields to develop skills! Juninho shares his football tips Juninho honed his skills in futebol de salao I think the best way to improve your skills is to play football on a smaller pitch. I didn't play 11-a-side football until I was 13. In Brazil most kids play what we call futebol de salao, which is similar to five-a-side. It is played on a hard surface and the ball is a lot smaller and weighted with foam so it doesn't bounce. This makes the ball harder to play with at first - but it's great practice for when you move to full-size football. On a small pitch you need to have good control and move the ball around quickly. There isn't much space so you need to be skilful. Most of the kids in my neighbourhood played futebol de salao. That is why Brazil always produces players with great skill.

Recent Soccer News RotoWire Update Recommendation Alan Smith (F) Manchester Utd
Thursday saw the completion of Smith's transfer from freshly-relegated Leeds to ManU for a seven million pound fee. The 23-year old striker passed a physical on Wednesday and proceeded to sign a five-year contract with the recent FA Cup champs. Some people are questioning this move, as the Red Devils already boast a starting strike force of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha. Others look at this move as a steal, seeing that Smith's talents - when fully displayed - are of a high quality and will allow him to fit in perfectly with the team's offensively-minded philosophy. Emile Heskey (F) Birmingham City
Milan Baros will now get more opportunities to start alongside Michael Owen up front for the Reds. Meanwhile, Heskey goes to a young squad, but have been desperately searching for a forward with experience. Barring injury, both parties involved should get what they wanted... Giovanni van Bronckhorst (M)
Barcelona and van Bronckhorst have agreed upon a three-year contract that will see the Dutch midfielder continue his time with the club.

Try spotting a Brit in the English Premier League
IAN HAWKEY, London
A LETTER from the British prime minister to his Home Office has guaranteed Tony Blair's government great popularity in Middlesbrough. Blair, who represents the north-east consitituency where Boro train, wrote in support of Juninho's application for an English work permit, enabling the midfielder to rejoin Boro. It worked. The Brazilian is now available to make his long-awaited return to the club, although he is unlikely to play at Leeds today. Although Juninho is among the most popular players to have graced the Premiership in recent seasons, Blair's role may have been decisive. The laws governing non-European soccer players in England are complex and often stringent - as Leeds's South African skipper Lucas Radebe has experienced - and because Juninho, despite his great talent and energy, has not been playing regularly for Brazil, his case was in the balance. Foreign players are making up a higher and higher proportion of the professionals in England, and the players' union, seeking to protect English jobs, are increasingly concerned. Not a week goes by in English soccer without the pros and cons of foreign players being debated in bars, TV studios and newspaper columns.

Gazza job-hunting PAUL Gascoigne is once again looking for a team to play for. Gascoigne and DC United in Washington have agreed not to pursue contract talks, the club announced this week. The former England star, 35, had been training with the club for a week. Happy Romario VETERAN Brazilian striker Romario will change from Vasco to Rio de Janeiro's Fluminense, the player told a radio station in Rio de Janeiro. "To go to Fluminense is the best thing that has happened to me. It's a strong team. That makes me happy." Bica's dreams BRAZILIAN forward Marcos Di Giuseppe, known as Bica, is poised to sign for Dundee United. Bica said from Peru: "I had an offer from Dundee United in January, but then there were some problems. Now they called me again, and I'm ready to go. I have a lot of dreams." Juninho gets UK nod BRAZILIAN midfielder Juninho won an appeal on Friday and was granted a work permit to play in England with Premier League side Middlesbrough. The British government initially turned down the work permit application because Juninho has not played in at least 75% of his country's competitive international matches in the past two years. Middlesbrough, who bought Juninho for £6-million (about R90-million) from Atletico Madrid, won the appeal by noting that the Brazilian had played 42 matches internationally for Brazil and played for their recent World Cup-winning side. This will be the midfielder's third stint with the English club.

Irish boys get off to
good start with a win
by Andy Colquhoun, Cape Town
IRELAND's Under 17s lived up to their playing reputation but blotted their copybook with a sending off as they began their assault on the third leg of a youth football triple crown with a deserved 2-1 victory over the Meridian Cup hosts South Africa.
Their greater composure and superior organisation saw them take a 2-0 lead at the familiarly named Athlone Stadium before the sending-off of midfielder Jimmy Goodwin threatened to upset their equilibrium.
"As I was walking out of the box I was kicked on the calf," said Goodwin afterwards. "I swung round and kicked him back. Fair enough that I got the red card but he should have had one as well."
German referee Herbert Fandel made the dismissal on the advice of his Ugandan linesman and the subsequent penalty - converted by Gabriel Mofokeng - gave the outclassed South Africans a glimmer of hope.
The sending-off and two bookings were being interpreted by South Africans as proof of Ireland's perceived reputation for robust play but, in truth, they displayed nothing of the sort.

Juninho cleared for return to Riverside
JUNINHO is set for a return to the Riverside now that Department of Education and Employment officers have recommended he be given his work permit.
The diminutive Brazilian playmaker, such a hit on Teesside during his previous stint with the club during 1995-97, is currently with Atletico Madrid but is eager to return on loan until the end of the season to play for Boro.
Before the work permit was issued the Football Review Panel had to assess two key criteria; whether Juninho was a player of the highest calibre and whether he would make a clear contribution to the game in Britain.
A DfEE spokesman said yesterday: ‘‘The Football Review Panel has recommended a work permit be issued to Juninho, and Middlesbrough have been informed.’’
Boro went to appeal on Friday after the player’s initial application for a work permit was turned down because of his lack of international matches in the last two years left him well below the 75% qualification level.
But the fact that he performed so well during his first spell with the club, and was named the Carling Premiership Player of the Year for 1997 were major threads in their arguments at the appeal.
A Middlesbrough spokesman said that although the club welcomed news that the Football Review Panel had recommended Juninho be given his work permit, the deal was not cut and dried.
