In January 2003, soccer players from various Chinese clubs gathered in Haikou City, Hainan Province, to train for the coming season of the Chinese League. Enthusiastic soccer fans surrounding the training ground were excited to find Paul Gascoigne, a former England midfielder, among the soccer players. The news that Gascoigne was to join the Chinese League made the front page of various sports newspapers. Chinese soccer fans expected Gascoigne, known at the moment as the most famous player among all the foreign soccer players in China, to show off his skills on the pitch. In his country, people have varied opinions about his move to China. The Times said that it was lucky for Gascoigne to join the Chinese League, stating it was the right place for him. The Sunday Post, however, commented that he was taking a risk by joining a Chinese soccer club, and this move might be his road to perdition.

Former England international Paul Gascoigne scored a goal and set up another in his debut with Gansu Tianma on Saturday, steering the Chinese second division side to their first win of the season.
Tianma coach Gong Lei spoke highly of the Englishman after their 2-0 victory over Qingdao Aokema at home.
"I'm very satisfied with his performance," said Gong. "He played a pivotal role not only in attack but in defence as well."
Yin Lihua, head coach of Qingdao Aokema, felt helpless about containing Gascoigne on the pitch.
"His ability is far beyond the level of our players, even that of the second division league," he said.
Gascoigne, nicknamed "Gazza", showed his world-class skills in the 19th minute as he stole the ball in front of the penalty box, beat two defenders and unleashed a powerful shot into the upper left corner of the net.
"I dedicated this goal to my family, to the whole team, and the fans who supported us throughout the match," Gazza said after the game.

England has played Iceland once before - a friendly in Reykjavik on 2 nd June 1982 which finished 1-1. West Ham's Paul Goddard, a substitute, scored England's equaliser before a crowd of 9,000.
This match was played the day before England took on Finland in another friendly in Helsinki and was originally designated a "B"international. At England manager Ron Greenwood's request, it was subsequently upgraded to a full international.
The England line-up in Reykjavik's Laugardalsvollur Stadium was: Joe Corrigan, Viv Anderson, Phil Neal (captain), Dave Watson, Russell Osman, Terry McDermott, Glenn Hoddle, Alan Devonshire, Peter Withe, Cyrille Regis and Tony Morley.
Tottenham Hotspur's Steve Perryman and goalscorer Paul Goddard came on as substitutes to win their only senior caps.

Hoddle puts foot down and warns Gazza following off-field frolics
Fitness concerns put wayward star's berth in England World Cup squad in jeopardy
by Martin Lipton
ANGRY Glenn Hoddle yesterday (Tues) gave Paul Gascoigne a final warning: Let me down again and you're out for ever.
Hoddle is furious at the latest example of Gascoigne's inability to keep himself out of the wrong kind of headlines.
Out on the town with Rod Stewart at the weekend, Gascoigne was spotted out eating a kebab in the early hours.
After Hoddle had publicly urged Gascoigne to get his house in order, the response was hardly what he wanted or expected.
That was why the England coach sat the errant Geordie down for a face-to-face on Monday night.
He "forcefully" told Gascoigne that his international career will end before the France if he does not knuckle down at once.
And that included a clear warning that he faces the boot from the World Cup if he is spotted out on the town with showbiz pals like Chris Evans, Danny Baker or Rod Stewart.
"We had a good long chat," said Hoddle. "Paul knows the situation and what's being asked of him — he knows exactly.
