Some sport, that soccer. In case you didn't notice, the "world's game," mocked and ridiculed constantly in the United States, just finished its biggest tournament in France. Incidentally, the host nation captured its first ever World Cup championship by defeating world powerhouse and defending champion Brazil, 3-0. A guy named Zinedine Zidane scored two goals for France, both coming off his forehead on corner kicks, in front of a worldwide audience. Is the United States counted among this audience? Sure, soccer has a strong following among certain demographics in the United States, but there is no question that the sport ranks in importance somewhere below underwater bowling and midget wrestling to the average American sports fan. It is unfortunate for many reasons. First, soccer is not a boring game, contrary to common perception. Every game does not end 1-0, 1-1, or 0-0. Even when games are low scoring, why should people complain? Do baseball fans criticize their favorite sport when the Yankees and Red Sox play to a 1-0 finish? No, it is called either a "classic pitching duel" or a "defensive struggle." The same people who adhere to this double-standard must not think an outfielder standing still for minutes at a time is in any way boring.

Major soccer boost Shanghai Star. 2002-01-31 First Asian World Cup should promote regional game LONDON - The World Cup finals will give Asia's qualifying teams the perfect opportunity to show the progress they have made on the pitch in recent years and should lift the profile of the sport throughout the continent. "The first World Cup in Asia will be a major boost for the football on the continent as we expect a surge in the number of young people wanting to take up the game," says the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) head of communications A. Subramanian. "Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia and China will be seen as role models for other Asian countries to emulate." No Asian team has ever got past the World Cup quarter-finals with only the Democratic People's Republic of Korea reaching the last eight after their heroic performances in England back in 1966. None of this year's Asian teams are likely to surpass that performance but if the region is represented in the last eight in June that would be solid progress and should help to boost the fledgling professional leagues in South Korea, Japan and China. It would also serve as an incentive for more people to play soccer and world governing body FIFA hopes staging the World Cup in Asia will increase active participation across the continent.

KOJI SASAHARA/AP Frenchman redirects Japanese soccer culture By Jonathan Watts TOKYO It is tough being manager of the Japanese soccer team. Just ask Philippe Troussier, the unorthodox Frenchman at the helm of Japan's World Cup team. His role has involved not merely training his players, but educating a population of 126 million about soccer. In fact, soccer is still more of a fashion than an institution on this part of the globe.
