Interview with Roberto Carlos WorldSoccer: Would you say this has been your best season? You're playing like you've never played before.
ROBERTO CARLOS
: Yes, definitely. Is there a reason?
It all comes naturally to me, but I suppose my age, the amount of experience I now have, and the fact that we are on a winning streak - it makes you want to play even better, struggle harder. There's no great secret - it's all about ability and hard work. When you've got a team like this one, it's easy to play well. Real have a fine squad at the moment.

Spain Season Preview 2001-02 It may seem an impertinent thing to say about the reigning FIFA World Footballer of the Year, but Real Madrid's decision to pay œ47.2m for Zinedine Zidane had as much to do with marketing as football. Says who? The man who hatched the world-record deal, that's who. "Our strategy is clear," says Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. "I've always said this club should have the best players in the world. Why? Because they're the most profitable ones. Signing a world-class star means great international projection for Real Madrid and that translates into an economic profit. From a financial point of view, Zidane will be a great investment, the same as Figo has been." The timing of Zidane's arrival is crucial. Like all Spanish clubs, Real Madrid lag behind oft-quoted role model Manchester United in the commercial stakes. Perez is determined to use the hullabaloo surrounding Madrid's centenary season as a springboard to challenge United's supremacy.

XVI World Cup Championship Most football fans were outraged when France were crowned as World Champions in 1998. As they became the seventh nation to ever win the trophy, many questioned how much home advantage had to do with their success. Few unbiased experts admitted the superb defensive and midfield work, which the French displayed. Even their bald keeper Barthez made very few mistakes permitting a total of two goals in seven games. Zidane, Petit, Djorkaeff, and Lizarazu were all World-class footballers, who deserved winning the Cup. At that time they were generally unproven and the public were mostly displeased by their very first World Cup title. Croatia was the surprise of the tournament, with a run similar to another Balkan country, Bulgaria, from four years ago.

Even Friendly Games Are a Serious Matter
In Soccer, Politics Is Never Very Far Away
By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune LONDON - VANTAGE POINT In soccer, new boundaries are crossed and old politics are revisited almost every day. The U.S. national team has landed in Moscow for a match Wednesday. It is the first time the Americans have accepted an invitation to play on Russian soil. The delegation was met by a headline borrowed from the Cold War rhetoric of Nikita Khrushchev in 1960. ''To Show the Americans What For!'' read the message in Sovetski Sport. Bruce Arena, the U.S. coach, was not phased. ''Politics is not an issue here,'' he said. ''This is a friendly competition.'' Nice try, Bruce. We could all do with lessons in separating, so far as possible, the politics and the purpose of sport. Oleg Romantsev, the Russian team coach, sees the encounter differently, but still within the context of soccer.
