Senegal is a tiny country of nine million people, situated on the western edge of Africa. Despite its deep-seated urban problems of chronic unemployment, juvenile delinquency, and drug addiction, Senegal's national football team last week stunned the world by beating the reigning world champions France, 1-0. Senegalese went wild with joy, making noise with everything thing they could lay their hands on - drums, saxophones, fiddles, whistles, car horns, kitchen pots and cooking pans. Senegal had found 11 men who had demolished the pride of their former colonial masters. On the other hand India, the world's largest democracy, the fifth largest economy, the IT superpower, the country that produces the largest amount of milk, butter, sugar, tea and two wheelers - a nation of one billion people - can't find 11 men, who could provide India such a joy. Most of these Senegalese World Cup heroes play top league professional football in France. Whereas a few years ago, when India's most successful football player Baichung Bhutia came to play professional football in England, he could only be accommodated in a second division team called Bury FC. At home, the media treated it as a big success story. The reality was quite different. Poor Bhutia couldn't make it to the regular Bury eleven. India's most skilful striker was totally out of breath, out of stamina and out of skills. He simply couldn't survive the pressures of second division English football.

World Cup glory a distant dream for India
World Cup Champions Trophy has been traveling around the world for display ahead of the games that kick off on May 31 in Japan and South Korea NEW DELHI, India (Reuters) Thousands of fans in the soccer-mad Indian city of Calcutta lived a World Cup dream for a few hours recently, though they knew it might never come true. Cheering and jostling, they packed a large stadium to watch top Indian striker Baichung Bhutia carry the FIFA World Cup trophy atop a decorated elephant. But the victory procession was make-believe; a clever sales pitch by a World Cup sponsor putting soccer's ultimate prize on display in key Indian cities ahead of the competition itself, which kicks off in Japan and South Korea on May 31.

The Three Men Journey Into Tennis
Post marital scare of becoming sloppy had encouraged two of my college friends to start on some activities that would keep us fit, as if the singles aren't sloppy! So far we have in mind tennis games, gym, ping-pong, and some jogging. The planning was done yesterday over a text messaging conference system, that we would be starting today, and only to have me changed the whole plan, because I will be going to a soccer match tonight. So much of planning that even made some plans to get some new gears; shoes, racket, shirts, etc. Wow! Time for shopping! And for crying out loud, the shopping carnival is just three days away! And today we headed out to the mall in hunt for rackets. One of us is lucky that he has the 50 bucks coupons that made his purchase of a brand new HEAD racket a very good bargain. Well, I was eyeing the racket first because of the weight and its cool color, but yeah, what the heck, it turned out that he like it too ... and he took if after found out the silver one was kinda dull. And I am gonna get mine when the sales start this Saturday. Looks like I will be the one who'll be getting all the balls for the games. And the other friend decided to use an old racket, which still works fine. I was keen on this PRINCE racket that was light and cool in color.

Baichung Bhutia aims higher
Despite having attained iconic status in India through years of top level performances, footballer Baichung Bhutia still strives to raise the bar. The gifted striker retains the hunger to score more goals and hopes to put up an even better show in the coming season. "I always strive to improve. I'll try to play even better in 2004-05," said Bhutia, the greatest name in present Indian soccer. "But, at the same time, I feel that football being a team game, it is the team performance which matters. My target for the next season is to ensure that whichever side I play in wins tournaments," the 27-year old striker said. However, he refused to disclose his club preferences for the coming season. "I don't want to disclose now the offers I have received. Also I would prefer to remain silent now whether I have received feelers from foreign outfits," said Bhutia, who created a sensation by becoming the first Indian to take part in the English professional league in 1999 by joining Manchester's Bury FC. The Sikkimese played three years with the English second division side Bury, till returning to India in 2002. It has been a fairy-tale story for Bhutia ever since he stepped out of the sleepy Sikkimese village of Tinkitam and landed in Kolkata as an immensely talented 16-year old in 1993 when he signed for East Bengal.

People of Bengal are sports crazy and the craziness is most apparent in Calcutta. Though Indians have a long way to go to make a mark in the world sports scene, the fan following for different sports is tremendous. The most popular games are football and cricket. The top football clubs of India are based in Calcutta. Thousands watch soccer matches in the maidan club grounds of the big three - Mohun Bagan East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting . The Calcutta Football Club was founded in 1872. Mohan Bagan was founded in 1889 and they won the Indian Football Association (IFA) shield in 1911 by defeating a British team. Gostha Pal ( 1896-1976 ) is one of the legends of Indian football. The 1942 and 1952 Olympic teams were formed mainly with Calcutta players. In 1962, India led by Calcutta footballer Chuni Goswami won the gold medal in the Asian Games football. Other football legends of this period include P.K. Bannerjee, S. Nayemuddin, Arun Ghosh and Sailen Manna Baichung Bhutia originally from Sikkim has captained Bengal and played for East Bengal. He is one of India's young icons. Friday, October 11 2002 16:51 Hrs (IST)
Kolkata: The Indian soccer team manager at the Asian Games Santo Mitra on Friday alleged that his squad was 'ignored' and 'neglected' by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officials as well as the tournament committee in Busan.
[an error occurred while processing this directive] "The soccer team did not get justice from the tournament committee. But what pained me more is the way my squad was ignored and neglected by the officials who represented the IOA there," Mitra said.
The only Indian squad to have gone at its own cost, the football team could not even get a protest letter typed against the match commissioner's decision to banish Chief Coach Stephen Constantine to the gallery during the Turkmenistan match.
Constantine was hauled up for arguing with the referee after the lung opener in Bangladesh for his controversial decision to march out Dipak Mandal for a foul.
"We also were not provided services of a doctor during the Turkmenistan outing," he alleged, adding "All this happened despite the fact that scores of IOA and SAI officials, doctors and office assistants were sent to Busan at government expense."

Bhutia turns out for Fulham in exhibition games
Star striker Baichung Bhutia will become the first Indian to play in the professional soccer league abroad when he turns out for Fulham F C, a first division soccer club in England, on July 19. All India Football Federation president Priyaranjan Das Munshi said that the AIFF had received a message the Football Association of England for Bhutia's clearence to play in England for Fulham FC this season. The AIFF in turn sent it to IFA, with whom Baichung is registered. Both bodies have given the necessary clearance, which frees Bhutia to play for Fulham. Though a few non-resident Indians play in the British league, Baichung is the first Indian in the real sense of the term to play in a professional league abroad. According to information received from Fulham, Baichung, the 23-year-old lad from the Himalayan state of Sikkkim, will play in two exhibition matches for Fulham before the professional league starts there. If he is found suitable, then Fulham will utilise his service in the professional league. Jemy Brudbary, an official of FEA, said professional teams in England were now playing exhibition matches among themselves as a preparation for the main league. Baichung had been called to play in these matches.

Uzbek take soccer gold with a last-gasp goal
    AGENCIES
Even as the match was moving towards extra-time, Innomov collected the ball from a melee and unleashed a 25-yard block-buster that swerved into the Indian net, beating goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee.
Earlier, Zimbabwe took the third spot, defeating Rwanda 7-5 in tie-breaker in the match between losing semifinalists.
The Indian players belied the expectations, especially in their midfield moves, and succumbed to a sprightly Uzbek team that consisted mainly of under-23 players.
The Indian frontliners were also to blame for the defeat as they muffed away quite a few rosy chances. While medio Renedy Singh shot out a Jatin Bisht pass from left off a Baichung Bhutia move in the 29th minute, veteran Vijayan, who scored in all the matches earlier in the games, failed to find the mark after he was nicely fed by a Renedy Singh pass around midway through the second half.
India, after their fine performances in the league stage were rated favourites, but the Uzbeks proved that unwise. Besides keeping all the Indian strikers under strict Vigil, they forced a number of opportunities with speedy moves and neat combination.
