FOOTBALL/WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN
Why India isn't good enough
ROHIT BRIJNATH "PHYSICS," said the speaker. Physics? we asked. What do Newton and gang have to do with football? The place was the Oberoi Grand Hotel. The time, a decade ago. The subject, why India isn't a footballing power. And the speaker, P. K. Banerjee, once player, then coach, always raconteur. Of course, 'physics' had nothing to do with it. With due deference to the enlightened and amusing PK, it was merely a case of mangled pronunciation. What he meant was "physique". Or rather the lack of it, which in his opinion was one of the primary reasons why India was unable to compete on the world stage. Just a handful and more kilometres away, in those days, at the Salt Lake Stadium, PK's theory was being vindicated, courtesy Chima Okerie. Okerie was not a great player by any measurement, maybe not even a very good one, but in India he was a star. Undoubtedly he had a striker's instinct for goal, but his speed arrived from muscular thighs, his ability to shrug off tackles and the close marking of his diminutive peers due to his powerful body. Some years later, in 1998, when I was researching the shift in most sports from subtlety to power, and how that leaves India at a disadvantage, I quoted George Blues, then technical director at FC Kochin, who said: "If I. M. Vijayan kicks the ball at 90mph, Ronaldo's would easily be 90mph."

Au equalised six minutes from time to cancel out a first half effort from Egmar Goncalves and give his team a 3-2 aggregate win to set up a likely clash against Japanese club Shimizu S-Pulse. Indias Mohun Bagan and Thailands Osotspa also made it through to the final qualifying round of the inaugural three-million-dollar event after getting the better of Valencia of Maldives and Indonesian club Persita Tangerang respectively. Osotspa were held to a goalless draw at home but qualified thanks to their 1-0 first leg victory while Mohun Bagan clinched a 3-0 win over Valencia for a 5-2 aggregate. South China team manager Leung Chou-chi admitted his side were lucky and praised Home United.

Kicking off in style
WHAT LAGAAN team achieved in 2001, 11 bare-footed natives accomplished at the turn of the last millennium itself. They crushed the British pride in a game of soccer on July 29, 1911. Like Aamir's devils they also had a point to prove as the victory came just 136 days before the colonial masters reduced the Calcutta's status from the national capital to just an ordinary city but the daredevils saw to it that Calcutta rose to the capital of football in the country. But the tale of football in India is full of protracted periods of darkness interspersed with few spells of sunshine in between. The game known as the sport of the masses failed to find bearing in the country, where there is no dearth of it thanks to the people who hold the strings and for whom every game is an extension of a puppet show. The game touched such an abyss that `Neville D'Souza scored an Olympic hat trick' became a rupee one crore question in "Kaun Banega Krorepati". "Stories from Indian Football" by noted sports journalist, Jaydeep Basu is an account of such erratic fortunes of Indian football, which failed to find that elusive `hand of God'. The book chronicles the days when the likes of Syed Abdul Raheem, P.K Banerjee, Chuni Goswami, Syed Nayeemuddin and the lately I.M Vijayan and Baichung Bhutia dodged the spanners headed by an unprofessional federation, sub-standard training and financial insecurity to kick India's way to glory. The historic drubbing of hosts in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and the Asian Games' triumphs of New Delhi and Jakarta - where the team had to face unprecedented opposition not only from fleet-footed South Koreans but from the raucous crowd as well all find a detailed account in the book.

MAHABUB ALAM KHAN Sui Thui Chin did not score a goal in the School Football Tournament’s final where his team, Dhaka Residential Model Collage and School, lost 1-2 to Emarat Hossain Adarsha School at the Kamlapur Birsrestha Mostafa Stadium on Thursday. However, it did not matter much for a striker who has displayed his undeniable skill, agility and power throughout the tournament on his way to become the highest goal scorer of the tournament. He scored nine goals in six matches along with a brilliant hat-trick.
The tribal talent Sui Thui who hails from Rangamati, has the ‘5-S’-skill, strength, speed, shooting, and stamina required of one to become a great footballer. In the school football tournament his speed and shooting power stunned spectators. He also possesses superb dribbling ability and like most people from the section of the country he hails from, he has natural boundless strength, most tribal people posses.
Sui Thui, already nicknamed ‘bundle of energy’ has also enhanced his reputation for having an uncanny resemblance to another popular striker from the subcontinent, perhaps the best striker from this region, Baichung Bhutia of India. ‘My classmates already call me Bhutia’ says the 15-year old prodigy. ‘Though I am not a diehard fan of what I have seen of Bhutia on television I nonetheless enjoy the compliment sometimes’ he adds. Baichung Bhutia the Indian national stalwart who plays for a first division club in England is also of tribal origin, born and raised in Darjeeling.

Unbalanced Sports Coverage in the Indian Media
Case Study: Sportstar
Scope The aim of this article is to show the unbalanced sports coverage prevalent in the Indian media (online, television, print) by means of a case study of the leading English language Indian sports weekly Sportstar that is published from Chennai. This article focusses on the cover stories of Sportstar in 2002 and 2003. Cover stories, apart from having a prominent picture on the cover, usually include at least a couple of in-depth articles in the magazine with lots of colour photographs, and sometimes have a related editorial, interview and poster. A star or a sport gets much more exposure when featured on the cover than when hidden as an ordinary article in the inside pages of the magazine. This article makes occasional references to the weekly magazine Sports Illustrated of USA. The context of these references is print media coverage of sports in USA and India using the comparable medium of leading sports weeklies, and is not meant to serve as a springboard for a broader discussion topic such as sports culture or sporting achievements of USA vis-a-vis India. Having defined the scope of this article, the following case is being made against Sportstar magazine:

East Bengal scripted history on Saturday by becoming the first Indian club to win any Asian level football tournament when they demolished Thailand's BEC Terro Sasana 3-1 in the final of the LG ASEAN Cup in Jakarta. The victory was even sweeter because BEC Terro is the champion club of Asia and had defeated East Bengal in the first league match of the tournament 1-0. Burly Nigerian Mike Okoro opened the scoring for the red-gold brigade in the 30th minute, while Baichung Bhutia increased the tally in the 52nd minute before Alvito D'Cunha completed the rout in the 78th minute. The lone goal for BEC Terro came in the 55th minute, through mid-fielder Anaikongopan.

FOCUS / East Bengal’s ASEAN triumph a boon for the sport
Winning across the Bay
THE Maidan is roaring again. Adorned in red and gold, the heart of Kolkata is speaking the language it knows best the language of the universal game as explained by its leading club in forceful terms at Jakarta last weekend.
East Bengal’s historic win in the final of the ASEAN Club Championship has taken the city back to its glory days, when football ruled the heart and minds. Like the rickety stands that dot the boundaries of the Maidan, the soccer system of the city too had moved to an unsafe plane when the champion club seized the moment and showed a way out with their splendid triumph.
Forty-one years after the Indian national team had notched its second gold medal success in the Asian Games, East Bengal’s win at the same venue generates a cause for celebration not just in Kolkata, but countrywide. It’s not often that an Indian team brings a trophy home but more than that fact, it’s the manner in which the club went about its task that holds out hope for Indian football.
“It’s a big achievement for Indian football,” said Baichung Bhutia, the captain of the national team and East Bengal’s man with the golden boot. “The countries from South East Asia had left us behind in recent times. A few years back, we even suffered defeats by five and seven-goal margins to these teams. From that point of view, our performance is very significant,” added Bhutia, who led the way for the Indian champions.

Historic win for East Bengal
JAKARTA, July 26 (PTI) EAST Bengal became the first Indian club to win an international tournament on foreign soil when they beat favourites BEC Tero Sasana of Thailand 3-1 to lift the LG Cup ASEAN club football championship in a thrilling final here today.
The hard-earned victory against the Asian Champions League finalists made East Bengal richer by $50,000.
It was sweet revenge for the Indian club, who had earlier lost 0-1 to the Thais in the league phase. Leading by a 28th-minute Mike Okoro goal at the break, East Bengal stretched their lead to 2-0 with golden boot award winner Baichung Bhutia taking his tournament tally to nine in the 48th minute.
Alvito D’Cunha sealed the issue in the 69th minute after the Thais tried to come back through a goal by Panai Kongpaphan in the 58th minute.
Bhutia, who was declared man of the match, continued his rich form and ended the tournament on a high with his solo second goal which put the Thais firmly on the back foot even as they were trying hard to nullify Okoro's strike. On a quick counter-attack, the brilliant Bhutia snatched the ball from Thai defender Thanongsak Pajakkta after a one-to-one battle. He went inside the box, pulled the goalkeeper out of position, and regaining his step after a slip, found the net with a firm right-foot shot. The Geloran Senayan stadium once again turned out to be a lucky venue for Indian soccer, where India had won the Jakarta Asian Games gold medal in 1962.

ASEAN meet a big test for Indian soccer: Bhutia
Star striker Baichung Bhutia on Monday said the upcoming ASEAN club football championship will be a big test not just for East Bengal but for Indian football as well. Bhutia, the only Indian to play as a professional in England for second division side FC Bury two seasons back, is confident that National Football League champions East Bengal will put up an impressive performance in the inaugural edition of the ASEAN Club tournament in Indonesia. "It is a big tournament for us and we have been preparing hard for the last one month. We have got a real good chance to do well and there will be good competition with some strong teams participating," Bhutia said, analysing the champion club's chances in the July 13-26 tournament. "The tournament will be important not just for East Bengal but for Indian football as well, as it is a good  chance to make a mark in Asia. So we will be more positive,"  said Bhutia, who was in Delhi to endorse the Kingfisher Corporate 5's football tournament. Bhutia, who will leave for Indonesia from Kolkata on Tuesday night, is in good form. On Saturday he scored twice in a 3-0 rout of his former club Mohun Bagan in the Kolkata Super Division League.
