February 2002 NO MORE BURY FC?
BHUTIA WANT TO STAY AT BURY
February 20, 2002: Indian star striker Baichung Bhutia wants to stay at Bury. He hopes, that his contract will be extended as soon as possible. Bhutia: "I’ve had a discussion with the manager and I have told him I would definitely like to stay. No decision has been made yet. I need games and Andy Preece wants to see how I have recovered from my injury before offering me a new contract. The club haven’t approached me about a new contract, but if they do I will definitely sit down with my agent and consider it. Whether I would sign depends on what the club put on the table, but I would like to stay at Gigg Lane and I need to get fit to prove I should be offered another contract. I haven’t had any contact with any other clubs. There was interest from some teams in Singapore last year but I never really spoke about the possibility of joining them. BHUTIA HOPING FOR QUICK COMEBACK
February 13, 2002: Baichung Bhutia started rehabilitation and hopes to be training again in five or six weeks’ time. "I am able to walk without crutches and I am doing a lot of strengthening exercises for my knee. I am also doing a lot of work in the water that will hopefully help the recovery process. Obviously I want to play before the end of the season and I think I can. But I haven’t seen the doctor who operated on me yet so it’s hard to say for sure."

This is one statement I'm sick and tired of hearing. Baichung Bhutia is just as overrated as David Beckham is. Bhutia is better than an average Indian footballer, but not the kind of king he's made out to be. Personally, I think he should concentrate a lot more on shooting with both feet properly, than the bullsh!t match-winning antics he tries to pull off.
But yes, IM Vijayan is possibly the greatest footballer our country has graced so far. We need more players like him.

A slow revolution is happening in Indian sport - children are turning to football.
Football is fast gaining a foothold amongst Indians Twelve-year-old Raagav, who has joined a soccer training academy at Gurgaon on the outskirts of the capital Delhi, is one of thousands, maybe millions of young Indians who want to play the game and even prefer it now to cricket. "I like cricket, but football is better," he says. "I want to be a professional and I want to play for Manchester United." Every street corner in every village and town in India still resounds to the shouts of young boys playing India's favourite game, cricket. A bare patch of land, a few bricks piled on top of each other as a wicket, a bat and a ball are all that is needed. But now football is starting to lure some away.

India soccer star joins UK club

Baichung Bhutia turns out in the colours of his new club
One of India's best known footballers has arrived in the UK to join second division Bury on a three-year contract, after he was granted a work permit by the British Government. The BBC's Peter Stevenson: "He's known as the superstar of India" Bhaichung Bhutia made history when he became the first Indian to be signed up by a professional European club. He has a distinguished international record, scoring more than 30 goals for his country. Bury officials say Bhutia could be playing in the club's first team within the month, and are hoping his signing will bring out the local Asian community in support. India's star Originally from the tiny Himalayan state of Sikkim, Bhaichung Bhutia has been playing for East Bengal - one of the few professional clubs in India. He turned professional at 16, after he was spotted by talent scouts and has become one of India's highest paid players. He has been nicknamed the "boyish soccer star from Sikkim" and compared to England's own top scoring teenager, Michael Owen.

East Bengal scripted history on Saturday by becoming the first Indian club to win any Asian level football tournament by demolishing Thailand's BEC Terro Sasana 3-1 in the final of the LG ASEAN Cup in Jakarta. The victory was even sweeter because BEC Terro is the champion club of Asia and had defeated East Bengal in the first league match of the tournament 1-0. The Geloran Senayan stadium once again turned out to be a lucky venue for Indian soccer, where India had won the Jakarta Asian Games gold medal in Nigerian Mike Okoro opened the scoring for East Bengal in the 30th minute, while Baichung Bhutia increased the tally in the 52nd minute before Alvito D'Cunha completed the rout in the 78th minute.

South Asian Soccer Supremacy
India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan battled it out at Goa's Nehru Stadium in Margao for South Asian soccer supremacy, in the South Asian Football Federation Coca Cola Cup tournament from April 22 to May 1. The gleaming trophy was, however, retained by hosts India by outsmarting Bangla Desh 2-1. Scintillating
goals by skipper Bruno Coutinho and Baichung Bhutia earned India a well deserved 2-0 victory over spirited Bangla Desh, to lift the glittering SAFF Coca Cola Football Cup in the finals at the Nehru Stadium in Goa on May 1. Guitars, cymbals, ghumots and crackersthe trappings of the Goa Carnavalwere all there while the crowd cheered, and India applied pressure and dominated the proceedings. Despite the territorial superiority, the Indian forwards failed to connect passes effectively, giving the impression that the vibrant Bangla Deshis, who put a fine display to defeat Nepal in the semis, would carry the day. In the 25th minute, however, India’s mercurial forward Baichung Bhutia, worked his way through the Bangla Desh defence maze and minussed the ball to Bruno Coutinho from the left flank. Bruno, with a penchant for placing himself within the scoring range, crowned India’s first-half dominance with a rasping drive to give India 1-0 lead. Bhutia scored a beautiful goal in the last minute of the first half to raise the tally to 2-0.

SOCCER Indian Football:
Yesterday's Promise,
Tomorrow's Glory Noel da Lima Leitao 's prescription for restoring Indian football to its former glory R In India, Football - quite correctly - has always been considered a sport of the masses. Indeed in most gullies hardware was not complemented with any software to maximise its potential. Significantly, the non-availability of football-specific coaching, took its toll on these players and consequently, the game in India was consigned to a back seat in the global arena. dilettante. The fact remains that unless children can enjoy extensive ball contact, they will never develop the skills and field vision required to play the game at any decent level. But even in later years, when the players have established themselves, coaches also invariably ignore the need to polish fundamental skills on an ongoing basis and spectators are often given a less than scintillating performance in terms of erratic passing, heading and tackling. Ever heard a spectator at a football match say about a player that he is not fit? He is probably right since, even on televised matches, we have seen players writhing on the field with cramps, a distinct sign that his physical preparation for a competitive game of football has been less than adequate.

Try spotting a Brit in the English Premier League
IAN HAWKEY, London
A LETTER from the British prime minister to his Home Office has guaranteed Tony Blair's government great popularity in Middlesbrough. Blair, who represents the north-east consitituency where Boro train, wrote in support of Juninho's application for an English work permit, enabling the midfielder to rejoin Boro. It worked. The Brazilian is now available to make his long-awaited return to the club, although he is unlikely to play at Leeds today. Although Juninho is among the most popular players to have graced the Premiership in recent seasons, Blair's role may have been decisive. The laws governing non-European soccer players in England are complex and often stringent - as Leeds's South African skipper Lucas Radebe has experienced - and because Juninho, despite his great talent and energy, has not been playing regularly for Brazil, his case was in the balance. Foreign players are making up a higher and higher proportion of the professionals in England, and the players' union, seeking to protect English jobs, are increasingly concerned. Not a week goes by in English soccer without the pros and cons of foreign players being debated in bars, TV studios and newspaper columns.
