Cavalier Daily Repechage WASHINGTON D.C. - John Harkes, Jeff Agoos, Jeff Causey, Ben Crawley, Mike Huwiler, Erik Imler, Kris Kelderman, Clint Peay, Richie Williams, John Maessner and George Gelnovatch. While to many this list of names may seem filled random choices out of the white pages, they're not. Otherwise, they would not be written here. Actually, these eleven people are all the former Virginia soccer players that have, at one time or another this season, suited up for Major League Soccer's D.C. United coached by, you guessed it, former Cav Coach Bruce Arena. These eleven have very little in common, other than playing for Virginia, winners of five of the last seven NCAA men's soccer championships. A few have earned international recognition, such as Harkes and Agoos, while others are still trying to find their spot in the national soccer scene. For Gelnovatch, playing for the United was rather unexpected, as he is the successor at the helm of the Cavaliers after spending seven seasons on the sidelines as an assistant coach. Harkes, the 1987 Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year honoring the top college competitor, has earned the most recognition since his days as a Cavalier. The 29 year-old midfielder has make 63 appearances with the United States National team since 1987, was named co-MVP with Uruguay's Francescoli in the 1995 Copa America, and played every minute of each first-round game for the United States in World Cup 1994.

United defeated the Dynamo, 2-0, in Arena's return to Charlottesville
By Seamus Morgan
Cavalier Daily Senior Writer Cavalier men's soccer icon Bruce Arena and eight of his former Virginia players, now with the D.C. United of Major League Soccer, made a triumphant return to the University with a 2-0 victory over the Carolina Dynamo last night at Klockner Stadium. The United provided most of the excitement for dedicated fans who braved the weather to provide a warm greeting for their former coach and players. In the first half, the rain-soaked field worked to Carolina's advantage as D.C. spent 45 minutes trying to attack the flooded Carolina end. The field proved too much for the United, and the teams went into the half with a scoreless tie. The second half proved to be a different story as the Dynamo defended the drier end of the field. With the added traction, D.C. quickly grabbed itself a 1-0 lead, scoring on a header by forward Steve Rammel off a well-placed corner kick from Virginia alum Jeff Agoos. Rammel sealed the victory by slipping his second goal of the game past Carolina keeper Scott Garlick in the game's 83rd minute.

Soccer star represents U.S. at World Cup By TOM TUGEND

Jewish Telegraphic Agency LOS ANGELES - Soccer star Jeff Agoos was so angry when he was the last player cut from the 1994 U.S. World Cup squad that he threw his uniform into a fireplace and burned it.
"I had gone through two years of grueling training and was very disappointed," said the 34-year-old defender for the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer (MLS).
Agoos made the World Cup team in 1998 when the United States was eliminated in the first round, but he didn't get to play.
He made the roster again this year and was in the starting lineup when the United States played its first match against Portugal on June 5 in Suwon, South Korea, which the Americans won 3-2.
Unfortunately, Agoos suffered a moderate calf strain during the first half of the USA's 3-1 loss to Poland, ending his World Cup participation. Agoos will be sidelined for approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
With 133 caps - one for each time he has played in an international match - Agoos is second on the USA's all-time cap-winners list behind Cobi Jones, and holds the U.S. record for international starts with 123, including all three group matches during this year's World Cup.
"We are very disappointed for Jeff," said U.S. head coach Bruce Arena. "He has made an outstanding contribution to this team, and we will wish him a speedy recovery."

Go to this page for the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings for international soccer teams, the listing that everyone used to judge the quality of teams competing in the current World Cup . Then scroll down to slots numbers 197, 198, 199, and 200. If you do, you'll notice that these lowly places are held by the teams fielded by Puerto Rico , the US Virgin Islands Guam , and American Samoa (tied with Turks and Caicos Islands ), none of whom qualified for the Cup this year. What's odd about these team listings appearing on this so-called "ranking by country"? Well, just the fact that the "countries" in question are all actually territorial possessions of the United States (# 13) which, unlike such perennial World Cup favorites as

Check Fridays and Mondays for weekly team updates and match reports Saturday, June 05, 2004 Injuries the order of the day for Quakes, Galaxy Will depleted backlines translate to goals at Spartan?
by Inge Bond San Jose, CA, May 21, 2004 (CSA) - If a game in the first third of the season can be a "must-win," the 7 p.m. matchup this Saturday between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Los Angeles Galaxy is a must-win for the Quakes.
Craig Waibel (left) and Jeff Agoos should be holding down the center of the defense against LA San Jose will be playing its fourth home game of the season and is still looking for its first win. The archrival Galaxy is off to a strong start with a 4-1-3 record, six points ahead of San Jose in the Western Conference standings. Three points earned in victory could bring San Jose to within nipping distance of the Galaxy, or could send L.A. distressingly far ahead of the pack. The Earthquakes, at this point in the season with a 2-2-3 record, could best be described as optimistic. They have displayed glimmers of their potential to excel, yet at times have shown some truly average soccer. The team is on an upswing following a scoring breakout in their 5-5 tie with the MetroStars and wins over Sporting Lisbon of Portugal and the Dallas Burn, and would like nothing better than to trounce L.A. to show that they are returning to championship form.

KOVALENKO'S GOAL SALVAGES TIE FOR UNITED
SAN JOSE-Strong play by goalkeeper Nick Rimando and a clutch goal by Dema Kovalenko helped D.C. United play the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 tie Saturday at Spartan Stadium. A crowd of 17,667 was on hand to witness young superstar-in-training Freddy Adu's first start for United.
Kovalenko slipped behind the Quakes defense to volley Bobby Convey's cross-field pass past 'keeper Pat Onstad in the 66th minute.
Rimando frustrated the Earthquakes throughout the game with a series of saves bordering on the specuacular. Early on, he parried Brian Ching's knuckling 30-yarder off the crossbar and back into play. In the 32nd minute, he fended off a pair of point-blank chances as Landon Donovan led a swarm of Earthquakes into the box.
San Jose finally broke through in the 33rd minute, with defender Troy Dayak's first goal in almost three years. Jeff Agoos curled a free kick on goal from the right flank. While Rimando dove to intercept the ball, Dayak stepped in to head a shot to the near post.

Adu is subdued in starting debut
May 2, 2004 Dema Kovalenko scored on a header in the 66th minute to give D.C. United a 1-1 tie with host San Jose yesterday in Freddy Adu's first Major League Soccer start. The Earthquakes' Troy Dayak opened the scoring in the 33d minute on a header off Jeff Agoos's free kick. ADVERTISEMENT San Jose paid close attention to Adu, the 14-year-old rookie who came off the bench in his club's first four games. Brian Mullan fouled Adu in the 70th minute to set up a United free kick just outside the San Jose penalty area. Four minutes later, Adu had an 18-yard shot deflected over the goal line. United coach Peter Nowak replaced Adu with Alecko Eskandarian in the 80th minute. The teen star helped attract a crowd of 17,667, San Jose's biggest since Sept. 21, 2002, when the Quakes drew 26,229 for a 1-0 loss to Los Angeles. Fire 3, MetroStars Dipsy Selolwane, Damani Ralph, and Ante Razov scored to lead host Chicago. Selolwane opened the scoring in the 15th minute, after Chris Armas redirected Andy Williams's pass ahead to Selolwane, who beat Jonny Walker with a low shot to the left corner from 8 yards. Ralph gave the Fire a two-goal lead in 56th minute. Second-half substitute Tenywa Bonseu stopped DaMarcus Beasley's cross attempt, but the ball deflected to Ralph for the shot from 10 yards. Bonseu entered the game after MetroStars fullback Jeff Parke injured his left hamstring in the first half.
