Fields of up to 18 skaters vied for three Olympic berths in singles and two in pairs and dance. Following the competition, the United States Figure Skating Association named its team for the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the World Junior Championships, and the Four Continents Championships. Tenley Albright. Peggy Fleming. Janet Lynn. Michelle Kwan moved ahead of all three by claiming her sixth U.S. title in front of a home crowd in Los Angeles. The twenty-one year old World Champion enters the Olympics bolstered by two perfect scores of 6.0s for her free skate to "Scheherazade." Completing six triple jumps, Kwan nevertheless left room for improvement at the Olympics. Her planned triple toe-triple toe combination, which she has not landed cleanly all season, became a triple-double. The audience of 18,500 couldn't have cared less, giving America's best hope for Olympic gold a rousing ovation before she had even finished her program. Thought to be battling for bronze at best, seventeen-year old sensation Sasha Cohen skated her way to a silver medal with near-flawless performances in the short and free programs. Rebellious by nature, Cohen skated a conservative free program that did not include an attempt at the quadruple salchow, a jump with which Cohen hopes to make history. No woman has ever landed a quadruple jump cleanly in competition, and since the retirement of Surya Bonaly, no woman has even been seriously trying. But Cohen's goal at Nationals was simply to make the Olympic team, and after much discussion with coach John Nicks, the quad was put aside in order to increase her chances of skating a clean program. With six triple jumps and only a small flaw on an improvised seventh triple, Cohen skated perhaps her best performances to date to decisively earn a berth on the Olympic team.

NEWS Rink News 2 Fond memories The European Figure Skating Championships came back to Budapest in 1984, after a long hiatus (they were held here twice before, in 1935 and 1939). 20 years ago, a young Russian pairs team drew a lot of attention, dethroning the defending Champions Sabine Baess/ Thassilo Thierbach (GDR) and taking their first European title: Elena Valova/ Oleg Vasiliev. They went on to win two more gold medals at Europeans (in 1985 and 1986), and they became the 1984 Olympic Champions. Now Oleg Vasiliev is back, coaching defending Champions Tatiana Totmianina/Maxim Marinin (RUS), who hope to clinch their third European title. Budapest holds more fond memories for Vasiliev as he and his partner came here to win the World title in 1988 after finishing second at the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, Canada. “I do remember the 1984 Europeans, but I remember the 1988 Worlds more vividly”, Vasiliev said. “It was our last competition (as eligible skaters), and we beat (1988 Olympic Champions) Ekaterina Gordeeva/Sergei Grinkov. In 1984, the Europeans were just before the Olympics, and this is where the main focus was on. But I remember that we skated well and took the first place without any doubt. The old ice rink looked a lot like our practice rink at home in Russia, the Yubileini stadium, and so we felt very much at home. In 1988, we gave one of our best performances here at Worlds, and a lot of things happened. For example, we collided during the warm up for the Free Skating with Jill Watson/Peter Oppegard. The audience here welcomed us warmly. I also remember that Budapest is a beautiful city and I’m looking forward to do some sightseeing.”

Before I start, this report will probably be pretty short (for me anyway!) I'm having a couple of aches and pains, so I'll only write the essentials. We started off our day by going to the junior ladies short program. It was my first competition where I saw a level other than seniors. Skating wise, I was pretty impressed with the junior ladies. Jump wise, well, there were only 3 clean programs. Alissa Czisney had a nice spiral sequence. The leader is Joan Cristobal, who went last, and was clean and had a nice presentation. She and her coach were pretty happy when the scores came up. The skaters from the Boston area (Louann Donovan and Colette Irving) both had mistakes. In Group B was Amber Corwin, Andrea Gardiner, Ye Bin Mok, Stacey Pensgen, and Stephanie Roth. Amber landed more than one triple toe/triple toe combos. Then we left to catch the ladies practice at the Fleet Center. Following is a spoiler of the Dance Finals and Mens Short program. Kwan, Weiss win national titles February 14, 1999 BY BARRY WILNER Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY Michelle Kwan probably could have won her third national title wearing snowshoes. To her credit, the two-time world champion was unaffected by the lack of competition at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Her superb free skate, marred only by a late fall on a triple lutz she didn't need, was plenty good Saturday night. "It was one of those performances where I just let it go," said Kwan. Earlier Saturday, after two years of barely missing a national title, Michael Weiss was nearly flawless in the men's event. Kwan, who has won the U.S. title in 1996, '98 and this year, made her other six triple jumps, including a triple toe loop-triple toe loop combination, look effortless. Her spins were precise and she ignored her fall to finish strongly with a series of spins. "I don't know what happened. I thought I had it," she said of the fall. "I was straight in the air. I guess I just didn't check out, but I knew to get right back up and keep on going. "From the beginning, my goal was to do the triple-triple, because I haven't done it in a year or maybe more," added Kwan, 18, of Torrance, Calif.

From the first chapter, I was fascinated with the background of these great athletes. Joy Goodwin has obviously done her homework........and has been deeply moved by their stories. I read the entire book in 3 days, and would reccomend it to anyone who loves a great story, not just skating fans. Video: The Lawrence Welk Show - The Lennon Sisters: Easy To Remember - This is certainly one of the best specials ever produced about the talented stars of Lawrence Welk's weekly musical dance-fest. Although the program is hosted by (and tells the story of) the lovely Lennon Sisters, it also offers a marvelous portrait of the singers and musicians who performed in the earlier years of the show Alice Lon, Big Tiny Little, Pete Fountain, Rocky Rockwell and many others. There are plentiful clips of these stars at their best, all tied together with present-day (well, early 90's) footage of the Lennons reminiscing about their days when they were part of Lawrence's musical family. A must-have for any Welk show fan! Video: The Sisters of the Gion - I just had a chance to see this beautiful movie, and once again I have to revise my ideas about Japanese cinemait's even more profound than I'd believed. What strikes the viewer immediately is the masterful use of shadow. The great novelist Kawabata wrote about the shadows of traditional Japanese homes and buildings, lit by lamps instead of neon, and this film utilizes shadow with the touch of a Rembrandt. The viewer is pulled into another world, the lovely and cruel world of pre-war Asia. The director explores the cruel circumstances of the sisters with compassion, and complete realism. The viewer knows with absolute certainty that the sisters will never escape their destinynot because of any moral failing, but because there's no way out. If you haven't seen this moviewatch it very soon and visit a world you've never dreamed of.
