Interview with Alexei Yagudin
by Magdalena Osborne
Do you ever get bored doing the same things over and over?
This is why we have a ping-pong table and play soccer and American football. The middle of the tour was tough but this is my job. We always find something to do. Which is better, the US or Canadian tour?
I usually prefer to tour in Canada because of the audience. The crowd is much louder and they support us so much during the performance. But the crowd in the US has been really, really good too this year.
What are you saying at the beginning of the program?
This was your second season with the US SOI show, what was the show like this year?
What do you feel the audience expect from you when you go out there to perform?
Security around the SOI shows has been compared to Fort Knox. Are you ever worried about your safety?
Will you come back next year?
Go to part II

46. American Skating World Article
yagudin gave the skating world a preview of things previous season at the CentennialOn ice Competition finishing Olympic champion and rink mate alexei Urmanov
http://members.aol.com/Shushun0va/article.html
American Skating World Article
This article appeared in the June 1997 issue of American Skating World . Just about the best time to get over a barrier is at the World Championships.
Alexei Yagudin finished fifth at the 1997 European Championships and the Champions Series Final. He saw the possibility of a similar finish at Worlds. His fifth place finish in the short program in Lausanne, Switzerland seemed to put him on track to round out the top five again.
However, something funny happened after the long program. Following a performance, complete with his trusty triple axel/triple toe loop combination, the 1996 World Junior Champion found himself in third place. The bronze medalist finished ahead of previous World medalists and European champions Viacheslav Zagorodniuk and Ilia Kulik. Also a master of the triple loop, Yagudin said this result threw him for a loop.
“For the first week, I did not understand it,” he said. “For me it was unbelievable. Now, I can understand it.”
The medal podium is nothing new for the 17-year-old phenom. He proved his competitive savvy with a third place finish at Skate America and a second place finish at Cup of Russia last fall. Yagudin gave the skating world a preview of things to come by grabbing silver the previous season at the Centennial On Ice Competition finishing ahead of Olympic champion and rink mate Alexei Urmanov.
Delivering at key moments is easier, when you enjoy skating in the competitive atmosphere. Yagudin includes himself in the group viewing competitions as fun instead of an opportunity to reach the depths of stage fright.

Bye Bye Alexei
Yes, it appears Ted and I may actually regret the fact that we did not have TV access before February 2002. All these years we were living without TV and missing out on some excellent skating... Through tuning into the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, we became acquainted with some skaters who appeared to have a lot of potential. We looked forward to watching them in future seasons. We believed their medals were only the beginnings of many more winnings. Sadly though, for some, their performances in Salt Lake City became the peak of their competitive careers. At age 16, Sarah Hughes won the gold medal with a fantastic long program, a fairy tale moment, yet after an uneven season last year, she has decided to focus on being a freshman at Yale this fall. And Alexei Yagudin, who skated two captivating programs, receiving more perfect 6.0 scores than any other man in history, ended up taking last year off the ice due to a hip injury. At Skate Canada earlier this fall, he announced his retirement from competitive skating. Ted and I were recently watching our recording of the televised Skate Canada competition, including Alexei's farewell, with a montage of moments from his career. We regret that the only skating of his we were able to see was at those 2002 Olympics. It would have been fun to have watched him grow as a skater, to have seen him win his world championships in previous years.

Trophee Lalique in Paris, France is the fifth of six qualifying events of the Grand Prix of Figure Skating. The competition takes place from Thursday November 23 until Sunday November 26. Only two competitions remain for skaters to earn points for the Final- Lalique and NHK. Trophee Lalique is a scoring event for all participating Ladies, Men and Ice Dance couples. 1999 World Champion Maria Butyrskaya (RUS) headlines the Ladies' event in Paris. Butyrskaya won the Gold at the Sparkassen Cup two weeks ago and now enters her second scoring event. She will be challenged by 1999 World bronze medalist Julia Soldatova (BLR), Vanessa Gusmeroli (FRA) and Viktoria Volchkova (RUS). Soldatova formely competed for Russia but has chose to represent Belarus from this season on. She attempted to represent Belarus at the 2000 Worlds but the change in country was made too late in the season to permit it. France's Gusmeroli (fourth at 2000 Worlds) would like to make amends after a weak free skate at Sparkassen Cup, where she finished a disappointing sixth. Volchkova was fifth at the Cup of Russia last week and hopes to win more points in Paris, while reigning World Junior Champion, Jennifer Kirk (USA), will be making her debut in the senior Grand Prix at the Trophee Lalique. List of Competitors (as of November 22) Ladies Julia Soldatova (BLR) Jennifer Robinson (CAN) Vanessa Gusmeroli (FRA)* Laetitia Hubert (FRA) Diana Poth (HUN) Silvia Fontana (ITA) Shizuka Arakawa (JPN) Dirke O'Brien-Baker (NZL) Maria Butyrskaya (RUS)* Viktoria Volchkova (RUS)* Jennifer Kirk (USA)

1999 World Champion Maria Butyrskaya will present her new free program at this competition, which is her first Grand Prix appearance this year and her first scoring event. Challenging Butyrskaya are Sarah Hughes (USA), who placed second at Skate America two weeks ago, and French Champion Vanessa Gusmeroli, who finished fourth at the Worlds last season. Gusmeroli is also competing in her first Grand Prix event this season and she is skating for points here. Ukraine's Elena Liashenko is also aiming for a spot on the podium. Making her comeback on the international scene is 1999 Four Continents Champion, Tatiana Malinina from Uzbekistan, who was hampered by injuries last season. European Champion Evgeni Plushenko from Russia heads the Men's field, which will be his first Grand Prix competition of the season. The 18-year old hopes to defend his 1999 Sparkassen Cup title, but he faces strong competition from Timothy Goebel (USA) who beat World Champion Alexei Yagudin at Skate America. 1998 European Bronze Medalist Alexander Abt of Russia and French Champion Stanick Jeannette are also medal contenders. Four Continents Silver Medalist Chengjiang Li (China) is hoping to redeem himself after disappointing performances at Skate Canada. Plushenko will not be skating for points here, whereas this is a point scoring event for Goebel and Jeannette. In each discipline, $30,000 will be awarded for first place, $18,000 for second place and $10,000 for third place. Skaters placed 4th and 5th, will also be awarded $5 000 and $3,000 respectively. Yagudin beat reigning world champion Plushenko
Russia's Alexei Yagudin won four 6.0s from the judges to win the Olympic men's figure skating title at Salt Lake City. Yagudin's near flawless performance meant that reigning world champion Evgeny Plushenko had to settle for silver. American Timothy Goebel, competing in his first Olympics, clinched the bronze.

Alexei Yagudin But it was Yagudin's day and the Russian, who spends much of his time in the United States, collapsed to his knees and kissed the ice after his impressive display. "I just fell to my knees and kissed the ice because I live here and won the gold medal here," said Yagudin, who had a high fever in Nagano and was dogged by injuries last season. "I was just thinking of the hard times I went through. Last season was like hell, but I am strong and I just showed that. It is one of my best."

Yagudin earned a record score from the judges
BBC Sport Online's James Cowling profiles men's figure skating gold medallist Alexei Yagudin. For Alexei Yagudin of Russia, winning the Olympic title was a dream come true. In 1998 at the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, Yagudin competed with a high fever and placed fifth. The 21-year-old was overcome with emotion when he realised he had won Olympic gold. He said, "I began to dream about this four years ago when I went to Nagano. There, I finally realised I could do it."
There's really nothing left for Yagudin to do
Olympic chamipion Robin Cousins A few weeks after Nagano, he won his first of three World titles in Minneapolis, USA. At 18-years-old and 15 days, he became the second youngest men's champion ever. Although he won two more world titles, it has not been without its challenges.

ICE SKATING: Master's of Figure Skating: Inconsistent Judging
A review of the Master's of Figure Skating, a pro-am competition that was televised on October 25, 2000 on TNT. In two parts: Men's, and Pairs.
Stacey Fong, 10/31/2000 Master's of Figure Skating October 12, 2000: Boise, Idaho Televised: October 25, 2000 on TNT
The Master's of Figure Skating is a "pro-am" competition. It tries to bridge the professional world of ice skating, which focuses on artistic and choreographic quality; and the amateur world of figure skating, the world that we see in the Olympics and the World Championships, which emphasizes technical prowess.
The competition consists of two parts: the short program, which contains the required elements we see in ISU (International Skating Union, which governs the amateur world of figure skating) competitions; and the interpretive program, which caters to the professional world, placing importance on artistry and performance.
The judging at this event, however, was erratic; some decisions were made based on professional criteria, and others were made based on amateur criteria. The two most controversial events were the men's and the pairs.

Third Event of the Grand Prix Series
The third event in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, the Sparkassen Cup on Ice, concluded in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Sunday (results and standings attached). World champion Alexei Yagudin (RUS) won the short program in the men's competition. The first to skate, he presented a near flawless performance of his entertaining circus program with a huge triple axel/triple toeloop combination, a triple lutz and a double axel with fast, well-centred spins and complex footwork. Alexander Abt (RUS), the European bronze medallist who is fighting to win one of the three places in the Russian team for this season's Championships, attempted a quadruple toeloop but two-footed the landing. His technically challenging program included an unusual triple axel/triple loop combination but he again just missed a clean landing. Andrejs Vlascenko (GER) placed third ahead of France's Thierry Cerez. In the ladies' competition Elena Sokolova (RUS), seventh at the Olympics, placed first in the short program. Her jump combination was a triple lutz/double toeloop and she landed a clean triple loop. Her only error was a slip at the end of a fast straight line step sequence. Second was world bronze medallist Maria Butyrskaya (RUS), winner at Skate America, who fell on a triple lutz but performed a fast and complex program to earn high presentation marks. Yulia Lavrenchuk (UKR) placed third, landing a triple lutz/double toeloop as her combination jump and a triple flip.
