In 1999, he became the first skater to land a quadruple toe loop in world championship competition. Now, the 24-year-old Fairfax, Va. native is training to compete at the 2002 Olympic Games. Check out Weiss' diary on CNNSI.com as he prepares for Salt Lake. January 16, 2002 The best way to describe my week at the National Figure Skating Championships in Los Angeles would be success. Success that is taking the toughest possible road to making the Olympic team. My week of practice went very well. I was hitting my quadruple toe/ triple toe loop combination very consistently. So when I competed in the short program, it came as a huge shock to me when I fell on that same jump in competition, leaving me in an unexpected and unwelcome fifth place. Irony has it that I have never felt more confident of skating a "clean" program than on that night of competition. I was so well prepared, and in such great shape it didn't make any sense to me that I could have fallen, when all of the preparation was so right. All I could think was "This is wrong, this is so wrong! This isn't the way it was supposed to happen. I was supposed to be skating for the title. Not sitting in fifth place!" Following my mistake in the short program, I tried to analyze what went wrong. After many frustrating attempts to come up with a logical answer, I came to the conclusion that I couldn't waste my energy trying to come up with a reason for the mistake. I needed to change my focus to making the Olympic team with my long program. And that's just what I did.

Weiss gets home-ice advantage STEVE DeSHAZO: Fairfax's Weiss ready for world championships in his backyard Date published: IT'S BEEN A STRANGE few months for Michael Weiss. The Fairfax County figure skater has a new coach, a new blade, an unexpected national titleand an unprecedented chance to chase a world crown in his backyard. Fresh off winning his third national title, Weiss will have his hometown crowd behind him at the world championships at Washington's MCI Center March 24-30. "It's awesome," Weiss said in a telephone interview this week. "I've performed in a lot of exhibitions in this area, but I've never actually performed in a competition." It's not just Weiss' address that makes him a favorite. His top rivals faltered at the recent U.S. championships. And 2002 Olympic silver medalist Evgeny Plushenko of Russia was unimpressive in winning last week's European championships, a competition Olympic gold medalist Alexei Yagudin missed with a hip injury. Yagudin is expected to be in D.C., but perhaps not in top form. And in a sport with notoriously subjective judging, it never hurts to come in as a contender.

Vol. 19, No. 10 Nov. 4, 1999 Nation's ice skaters rally to support injured UD pairs star Coach Tracy Poletis demonstrates her support. T hey glide across the ice locked in the isolation that only complete concentration can bring. The skaters at UD's Ice Skating Science Development Center appear almost oblivious to each other as they practice their jumps, turns and spins. Although all hear the same music, each seems to skate to a different tune. Off the ice, it's a different story. The skaters, their parents and coaches are part of an extended family, one that binds together individuals in this sport from across the country. That fact has been most evident in the aftermath of a skating accident that interrupted the career of pairs skaters Paul Binnebose and Laura Handy, who train at the UD center. Skaters across the country have rallied in support of Binnebose, who faces a long road to recovery after a near-fatal fall Sept. 29 that resulted in a severe brain injury. Skaters who train at UD as well as friends of the skater are wearing and selling ribbons to help raise money to help pay Binnebose's hospital bills. The ribbons are navy blue and purple-the colors Binnebose and Handy wore last year when they placed third in the nation in pairs figure skating and became part of the elite U.S. Senior World Team. The ice arena is accepting donations to a Binnebose fund, administered by the Delaware Amateur Skating Foundation.

From the first chapter, I was fascinated with the background of these great athletes. Joy Goodwin has obviously done her homework........and has been deeply moved by their stories. I read the entire book in 3 days, and would reccomend it to anyone who loves a great story, not just skating fans. Video: The Lawrence Welk Show - The Lennon Sisters: Easy To Remember - This is certainly one of the best specials ever produced about the talented stars of Lawrence Welk's weekly musical dance-fest. Although the program is hosted by (and tells the story of) the lovely Lennon Sisters, it also offers a marvelous portrait of the singers and musicians who performed in the earlier years of the show Alice Lon, Big Tiny Little, Pete Fountain, Rocky Rockwell and many others. There are plentiful clips of these stars at their best, all tied together with present-day (well, early 90's) footage of the Lennons reminiscing about their days when they were part of Lawrence's musical family. A must-have for any Welk show fan! Video: The Sisters of the Gion - I just had a chance to see this beautiful movie, and once again I have to revise my ideas about Japanese cinemait's even more profound than I'd believed. What strikes the viewer immediately is the masterful use of shadow. The great novelist Kawabata wrote about the shadows of traditional Japanese homes and buildings, lit by lamps instead of neon, and this film utilizes shadow with the touch of a Rembrandt. The viewer is pulled into another world, the lovely and cruel world of pre-war Asia. The director explores the cruel circumstances of the sisters with compassion, and complete realism. The viewer knows with absolute certainty that the sisters will never escape their destinynot because of any moral failing, but because there's no way out. If you haven't seen this moviewatch it very soon and visit a world you've never dreamed of.
