Alexei hasn't seen his father since his parents got divorced six years ago. He is an only child as well as a sickly child so his mother tooks him skating. Alexei has been skating since the age of four. When his coach moved to Sweden, he asked the famous coach of Alexei Urmanov, Alexei Mishin, to coach him and they have been together since 1994. Alexei started competing internationally around 94 where he finished 4th at the Jr. World Championships. Shortly after, he competed at the 94 Goodwill Games and other highly regarded competitions as a senior. Alexei really began to get noticed when he won the Jr. Worlds in 96 then almost beat Ilia Kulik at the Centennial on Ice of the same year. He did pretty well at his international events that year medaling in almost every one. It was a highlight when he finished 3rd at his first World Championships in 97 at the age of 16. That was the highest finish of a Russian man at those Worlds. Since then he has won 5 of his events, including the prestigious European Championships. The arrival of the flu during the 98 Olympics in Nagano affected many athletes. Unfortunately, Alexei was one of them and he finished 5th overall.

I had a great time and I must say I enjoyed each and every skater. My cousin went with me and we sat opposite the judging panel and diagonal to the kiss and cry on the right. The judges were Debbi Wilkes, Sergei somebody with a really long last name, Alison? I didn't catch the last name, but it sounded like Smith or something similar, Ron Ludington, Barbara Roles-Williams, and Kerry Leitch. The skaters were introduced by teams. Surya and Kurt came out first, followed by Yuka and Alexei, then Katia and Ilia and Kristi and Scott. When they did the lap after the introductions, Surya and Kurt were at the end and Kurt was pretending to be thrown off balance by Surya. J I apologize in advance if some things are wrong or inaccurate. I am relying on my memory and some chicken scratch notes. Ladies
Warm-up: It was hard to watch everyone at once. Surya did a forward spiral into a 3salchow and I think she did a 3toe/3toe. Kristi hit everything she attempted. I think Yuka stepped or fell out of a jump and Katia had a few pops. Yuka Sato: She did "Hat Full of Stars" in the pretty blue dress. I love her skating! She hit 2axel, 3toe(shaky), 3loop, and 3salchow (both good)

Except for the throw triple, even the skating elements in the program are performed in character, such as a pair spin in which the urchin is following the adult around.

The humor is derived from the irony of two muscular men portraying swans.

When a worldwide audience tunes in to watch competitors take the ice in the Grand Prix Final figure skating competition in St. Petersburg, they will witness a reflection of Russia that defies logic. After all, if the Russians leave their competition flailing - as they have in the six Grand Prix events leading up to this weekend's final at the city's Sport and Concert Complex - they will continue to flout Western conventional wisdom that has Russia's sports traditions declining with its economy. Instead, Russian figure skaters are enjoying successes that skaters from other countries would whack knees for. Ottavio Cinquanta, the president of the International Skating Union, or ISU, drove the point home at a press conference Thursday, describing a "new era" in figure skating competition. Russian skaters are so dominant, he said, that it poses problems to the rest of the countries in the ISU, which as its name suggests, is intended to be "international." Indeed, the hottest competition for the Russians this season has been the Russians themselves.

The procession of victorious Russian figure skaters The Russian figure skating school re-affirmed its title as the best school in the world at the world championship in Dortmund, Germany. Russian figure skaters won three out of four gold medals. Tatiana Totmianina and Maksim Marinin became champions in the pairs competition, Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov won the ice dance competition, and Yevgeny Plushenko won the men's event. This was the sixth time that Russians have accomplished the outstanding feat of winning three gold medals. They achieved the same results in 1975 (Colorado Springs), 1985 (Tokyo), 1992 (Oakland), 1998 (Minneapolis) and 2002 (Nagano). However, in 1999 in Helsinki, Russian figure skaters won four gold medals.
Russian figure skating has a long history. Nearly 100 years ago, Russians achieved their first big success in this sport. In 1908, Nikolai Panin-Kolomensky, a famous Russian figure skater and a world and European champion, won a gold metal at the Olympics in London. After the 1917 revolution, in early Soviet times, figure skating was overlooked in Russia. This sport was considered aristocratic and expensive primarily because of the need to construct rinks with artificial ice.
But in the 1950s, the Soviet Union had developed into world power in sport, and figure skating was promoted. Numerous children's figure skating clubs opened and ice skating rinks were built. As a result, in 1964, 56 years after Panin-Kolmenkin's victory, Soviet figure skaters Lyudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov won the pairs title at the Olympics in Innsbruck. Four years later, they repeated their victory at the Grenoble Olympics. Since then, the laurels in figure skating have belonged to Soviet, and later Russian pairs. The glorious Irina Rodnina won Olympic gold three times (in 1972-1980) in pairs skating. Soviet pairs, too, became trendsetters in the ice dance competition in the 1970s. The skills of the legendary couple - Lyudmila Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov - are still marvelled by both experts and admirers all over the world.

It requires well-disciplined, precise footwork; conformity with each other’s steps; and a keen sense of timing and rhythm. Ice dancing differs from pairs skating in that ice dancers are restricted to lifts no higher than the man’s shoulders, and there are no jumps. One skate must be on the ice at all times.
