American Skating World Article This article appeared in the June 1997 issue of American Skating World . Just about the best time to get over a barrier is at the World Championships. Alexei Yagudin finished fifth at the 1997 European Championships and the Champions Series Final. He saw the possibility of a similar finish at Worlds. His fifth place finish in the short program in Lausanne, Switzerland seemed to put him on track to round out the top five again. However, something funny happened after the long program. Following a performance, complete with his trusty triple axel/triple toe loop combination, the 1996 World Junior Champion found himself in third place. The bronze medalist finished ahead of previous World medalists and European champions Viacheslav Zagorodniuk and Ilia Kulik. Also a master of the triple loop, Yagudin said this result threw him for a loop. “For the first week, I did not understand it,” he said. “For me it was unbelievable. Now, I can understand it.” The medal podium is nothing new for the 17-year-old phenom. He proved his competitive savvy with a third place finish at Skate America and a second place finish at Cup of Russia last fall. Yagudin gave the skating world a preview of things to come by grabbing silver the previous season at the Centennial On Ice Competition finishing ahead of Olympic champion and rink mate Alexei Urmanov. Delivering at key moments is easier, when you enjoy skating in the competitive atmosphere. 1999 Champions on Ice Tour Nashville, TN I was very excited about going to this, I got really good seats this time! I thought they were 6th row but turned out to be 4th row. Very cool! I went to the arena at about 4 and the dorrs were open! No one was there though. So we went and ate at Planet Hollywood, then came back. Michelle Kwan was on the ice! She did great in practice, I don't think she fell at all. At about 5:30 the other skaters started warming up. I stood at the top of the lower section and watched for almost an hour. Then a guard asked us to leave. We kept asking if there was any way to get passes for the autograph session but no one knew. This has got to be one of the coolest things I've ever been to, much better than in Memphis!! :) I met all but 6 of the skaters. The tour is coming back to Nashville next year, and probably Memphis, and I can't wait!!!

Krylova and Ovsiannikov took all first-place votes from the judges, scoring mostly in the 5.7-5.8 range, after a routine skated to the Ravensburger Waltz and Tagno Romantica. Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat of France were second, although the U.S. judge rated another Russian couple, Irina Lobacheva and Ilia Averbach, second. Anissina once skated with Averbach for the former Soviet Union and won two junior world championships with him before moving to France. The original dance to the waltz rhythm follows Thursday and the free dance is scheduled for Friday.
