With a ninth place finish at Skate Canada, he gained back a little leverage with his third place finish after his long program. He landed seven triples but didn't have a clean quad (hand down). Goebel, who defeated Russian quad monster Alexei Yagudin at Skate America, was in second after the short program. Skating to music of Henry V in his long program, he fell on a quad toe loop attempt but integrated a quad Salchow later in his routine. Although technically strong, Goebel's presentation marks (5.6s and 5.7s) are reflective of what needs improvement. After all, if the Russians leave their competition flailing - as they have in the six Grand Prix events leading up to this weekend's final at the city's Sport and Concert Complex - they will continue to flout Western conventional wisdom that has Russia's sports traditions declining with its economy. Instead, Russian figure skaters are enjoying successes that skaters from other countries would whack knees for. Ottavio Cinquanta, the president of the International Skating Union, or ISU, drove the point home at a press conference Thursday, describing a "new era" in figure skating competition. Russian skaters are so dominant, he said, that it poses problems to the rest of the countries in the ISU, which as its name suggests, is intended to be "international." #453, Tuesday, March 30, 1999 NEWS AND BUSINESS Russians Reign Supreme In Skating Worlds By Mike Scollon STAFF WRITER Photo by Thomas Kienzle / AP HELSINKI, Finland - The cards were seemingly stacked against them, but in the end Russian figure skaters trumped all the world's aces when they took all four gold medals at the World Championships at Hartwall Arena. The Russians took three of four gold medals in last year's Minneapolis championships. This year's sweep came courtesy of Maria Butyrskaya, a late bloomer at 26, who turned the tables on the United States' two-time world champion Michelle Kwan to become the first Russian ladies world champion on Sunday. Kwan had won her 10 consecutive events going back to the Minneapolis event, while Butyrskaya had a history of wilting under the stress of high-pressure events. Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze repeated as gold medalists in pairs on Wednesday, Alexei Yagudin repeated as world men's champion Thursday, and Anelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsyannikov repeated as world ice-dancing champions on Friday to set the stage for Butyrskaya. Yevgeny Plushenko, 16, won the men's silver and Julia Soldatova, 18, took bronze in the ladies' competition. "We planned to take two [gold] medals, but we didn't know what to expect from Michelle Kwan. But when we came here we saw that she wasn't in her best form and we knew there was a real [possibility] to win here because Maria was in good form," said Butyrskaya's coach, Elena Tchaikovskaya, after the event.
