Playoff Hockey
Setting: The National Hockey League, circa the printing of the game.
Game Play: Both interesting and true to the sport. Each player chooses six cards to represent his team. You need a Center, two Defensemen, a Right Wig, A Left Wing, and a Goalie. You then lay those out on the table in the starting positions for a hockey game (very nice illustrations in the rulebook, by the way). The goal is to get possession of the hockey puck, skate your team forward and shoot for a goal. Play ends when one person runs out of cards. At that time, whoever has the most points wins.
This game does use custom dice to resolve actions, but even though I personally hate games which require additional materials, I didn't mind this as much because the dice were clever. These were six-sided dice with two blank sides, a puck, a whistle and an NHL logo. Whenever you are trying to shoot, you roll dice equal to your card's SHOOT stat. Count the number of pucks and NHL logos. If the logo matches the shooter's team, it counts double. The Goalie rolls dice equal to their BLOCK stat. If you beat the goalie, you score a point. Pretty simple and very quick.
Other than that, all you really need to figure out is what to do with the cards. Each player has a hand of three cards. They must draw one and play one per turn. The cards will allow you to SKATE a player forward so they can take a shot (or if they don't have the puck, they add +1 die to the player who has it), SHOOT, PASS or STEAL. Of course there are actually a lot of variations. One card might say: "OFFENSE: SKATE wingman, PASS puck to CENTER, SHOT at +1". If you don't have a useful card in your hand, you may discard any card to SKATE or SHOOT (but only if you have the puck). One last thing: they don't include a puck counter, so they recommend you use a nickel.

At eighteen, Pavel Bure was already a star with the Central Red Army team and was asked to sign on for three more years. Bure decided instead to follow a number of other stars from the Red Army Team to the NHL. In 1991, Bure signed with the Vancouver Canucks. His star rose rapidly: Dubbed the "Russian Rocket," Bure put together two stellar 60-goal/100 point seasons. As early as 1993, however, Bure was mentioned in reports of NHL players being extorted by Russian organized crime. Later, Bure was linked as a friend and business associate of Anzor Kikalishvili, the head of the 21st Century Association, a sports/entertainment marketing company that law enforcement officials believe is a front for illegal activities. Bure is beginning his eighth NHL season, now playing for the Florida Panthers. (read his interview)
Valeri Kamensky grew up in Voskresensk, Russia a small town some fifty miles from Moscow which has produced some of the nation's best hockey players. In 1991, Kamensky became the second player from Voskresensk to make the move to the NHL, landing with the Quebec Nordiques. Kamensky reportedly played a key role in helping a reputed Russian mobster, Vyacheslav Sliva, enter Canada in 1994. Kamensky is said to have prevailed upon Quebec Nordique officials to officially request a visa for Sliva, whose criminal background could potentially have blocked his travel. In their letter of reference, the Nordiques claimed that Sliva "is a friend of one of our players." Kamensky starred for several years with the Colorado Avalanche, the name of the relocated Nordique franchise, helping the Avalanche to a Stanley Cup. In July, 1999, Kamensky signed a rich four-year $17 million contract to play for the New York Rangers.

BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) With an opportunity to set a team record, the Ottawa Senators were done in by an unusually poor performance by their penalty-killers. Defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick scored a power-play goal with 2:47 remaining in the third period as the Buffalo Sabres tallied three times with the man advantage and ended Ottawa's 11-game unbeaten streak with a 3-2 victory. The Senators had gone 9-0-2 since a home loss to Boston on December 13 and entered as the NHL's second-best penalty-killing unit. But facing the NHL's 26th-ranked power play, Ottawa fell one game shy of stretching its run to a club-record 12 games. With just two goals in its previous 193 1/2 minutes, Buffalo finally cashed in when J.P. Dumont netted a power-play tally late in the second period. Daniel Briere doubled the lead 4:51 into the third, but the Senators stormed back as Martin Havlat and Todd White scored 25 seconds apart later in the period.

We take a look at the NHL's most overpaid players, plus those who are earning every cent of their pay LET'S GET ONE THING OUT OF the way immediately: All of these guys make a lot of money. Even the scrubs in the NHL are well-compensated. The NHLs minimum salary is after all a healthy $150,000. As for the starssuper, alleged, and buddingwell, we should all take home this kind of pay at some point in our lives. But who actually earns their money? And which players are vastly overpaid, providing a minimal return on the investment their teams make? Remember that although baseball is in a wicked financial mess and the NBA is struggling at the gate and in the television ratings, the NHL still brings in less money than any of the other major sports leagues. Add in the fact that the league must deal with the weak Canadian economy and that its collective bargaining agreement expires in three years, and there are more than enough arguments for some kind of financial sanity. "Something is going to have to be done," says Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee. "When you compare us to other sports in terms of income, some of the numbers just don't make any sense."

In the wide-open Northeast, teams, are happy peppering the net in the regular season, but too are often left asking themselves questions about the postseason TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS Simply put, Toronto is a good team. But Leafs fansnot to mention the tough Toronto mediaare tiring of playoff eliminations. Many cities would be happy with a team that advanced to the conference finals (1999) and the second round (2000) the past two yearsbut not Toronto. So the Leafs have added some muscle, hoping to strong-arm their way through the playoffs. ON THE ATTACK: Led by captain Mats Sundin, the Leafs can score (246 goals last season, the East's second-highest mark) and they have speed. Already blessed with skill, coach and general manager Pat Quinn bought some toughness over the summer by signing power forwards Gary Roberts and Shayne Corson. Combined, that's a $14.75-million investment that the Leafs were happy to make after being muscled out of the playoffs by the New Jersey Devils. "Right now, the NHL is dump-and-chase, crash-the-net, shoot-it-out [hockey]," Quinn says. "So you [have to] get those type of players."
