Now that the draft is over, the pundits will begin to assign grades to the various teams on how well they did in restocking their franchise with new talent. All the while, none of these players has played one second in the NHL. Jim Devellano, senior vice president of the Detroit Red Wings, stated four years ago that he would like to give the draft about four or five years. "When you do a draft today, you're not drafting for next year," said Devellano, a key figure in the recent success of the two-time Stanley Cup champions, "you're drafting four years down the road. "There's not going to be many in the pools that step in next year. If you get three guys, it will be a miracle. But hopefully, there'll be a hundred that step in four years from now." Out on the Blueline: Net Protectors: Here's the most solid point of the team. If Nashville gets anywhere this season, Tomas Vokoun deserves heavy consideration for the Hart Trophy and Vezina and whatever other hardware they have for goalies. Vokoun proved a lot to a lot of people last year by just showing how good he is,especially by playing on the team he's on. There's nothing much to say about him, except he's solidified himself as a top flight starter in this league, and if you argue with that, then you just don't watch hockey. But...he could end up having trouble with all of the lack of experience on the defensive side, and to that I say, let's see what happens. This guy stops as many shots as anyone. Now he'll have Jan Lasak backing him up it looks like. Lasak has shown in camp that he can make the step up to number 2 on the team. If there's something Nashville it's solid in, it's goaltending.

THE WEEKLY TIRADE By Scotty Kowall Every Monday In Comedyzine The NHL season has begun and this year brings more than the usual soap opera storylines. Where to start? How about in the Western Conference? The Detroit Red Wings made Cujo their sacrificial lamb after getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. He didn't play as well as Jean-Sebastien Giguere but except for maybe Marty Brodeur, who did? Bringing in Dominik Hasek may sooth the fan's wrath but it won't help them score goals. Their new and improved defense looks solid but losing Fedorov to the Mighty Ducks will hurt. Ray Whitney will score some goals but the challenge will be keeping his plus minus respectable. The Red Wings won't dominate the league but they will definitely not fall again in the first round of the playoffs, unless they face another hot goaltender.... Sergei Fedorov and Vaclav Prospal move to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks while Paul Kariya moves to the Avalanche. There is no reason the Ducks won't compete for a top playoff spot, at least that is what I thought until their top defenseman Keith Carney broke his foot. Giguere is as good a goalie as there is but unless the Ducks keep the shots against to a minimum they will have a difficult time repeating. Fedorov is a better two-way player than Kariya and I am inclined to believe that the loss of Steve Thomas who wanted to remain with his family out East will hurt the team more than the loss of Kariya. If Fedorov proves his worth he will keep this team competitive and he should...

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach INTRO TO NEW SEASON There continues to be no shortage of Ukrainian representation in the ranks of the world's highest echelon of professional hockey. No less than 62 pro players of some Ukrainian background were listed on training camp rosters submitted by the 30 clubs of the National Hockey League. Training camp rosters include only players signed to NHL level or minor league contracts; they do not include many dozens more skaters of Ukrainian descent toiling away in the professional minor league ranks. The list of 61 included a player who has actually been retired for several years - goaltender Kelly Hrudey is still carried on the Calgary Flames' roster in case he desires to "unretire." Excluding the aforementioned Hrudey, the defense position is most popular among Ukrainian NHLers with 25 of the total 60 plying their trade on the blueline. Thirteen left-wingers, nine centermen and only five right-wingers fill out the forwards. Nine gutsy guys don the heavy equipment and attempt to stop speeding pucks in front of the nets. Examining the 30 NHL team lists, from a Ukrainian perspective, the "shame on you" awards for zero Ukrainians go to six clubs: Boston, Chicago, the New York Islanders, Minnesota, Nashville and Phoenix.
