Avalanche enter 2003-04 season with revamped roster, high hopes for Cup victory...
Say what you want about goaltending and defense winning championships, but a good offense still puts fannies in the seats. There will be no exception to that rule in Denver this season, where the Colorado Avalanche have juiced up their offensive engine with the signings of one of the greatest one-two combos in league history, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne.
This soon-to-be-legendary signing isn't the only sweeping change on the Avalanche roster, however. The greatest goaltender of all-time, Patrick Roy, has retired from the NHL, leaving the Avs with a gaping hole between the pipes. The loss of defensemen Greg de Vries and Bryan Marchment has allotted two spots to newcomers on the Avalanche blue line, one to be filled by former Predator Karlis Skrastins and the other by an ex-reserve from Hershey of the AHL.
That said, the Avs are still talent-laden with the likes of Adam Foote, Rob Blake, and Derek Morris, along with an under-rated Martin Skoula. This defensive corps should hold their own with 90% of the league.
Here now is a look at the complete roster for the Avalanche, along with league rankings:

Skrastins' rights acquired by Avs
The Colorado Avalanche acquired defenseman Karlis Skrastins, a Group II free agent, in a trade Monday that sent a third-round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft to the Predators. Skrastins has played in 269 consecutive games, the third-longest active streak in the NHL. He had three goals, 10 assists and 44 penalty minutes last season.
Colorado was eager to acquire the former Latvian Olympic team member to a deal to counter the possibility of losing defenseman Greg de Vries, an unrestricted free agent, to another team.
Avalanche GM Pierre Lacroix has actively courted the defenseman, who had a coming-out season with the Avalanche last year. But, the defenseman seems intent on testing the free-agent waters before making a commitment.
Nashville, who also let defenseman Bill Houlder and Cale Hulse pursue free agency, was willing to let the 28-year-old Skrastins go as the team attempts to rebuild its defense corps with younger players.
"Karlis has been a good pro and solid contributor for the Nashville Predators," said David Poile, the Nashville general manager. "With our emphasis on rebuilding the defense, we've decided to go with our younger prospects in a move that we think will make us better in the long-term."

Predator Skrastins hoping to play a strong role with Latvia In hockey, players are sometimes asked to take on new roles just as a Shakespearean actor might. And in Salt Lake City, Karlis Skrastins of the Nashville Predators may have his own distinct role to play in the Olympic drama.
With the Predators, the 27-year-old Latvian defenseman plays a solid all-around game, blocking shots and logging 20 minutes most nights. When he dons the maroon-and-white colors of his native land, though, he seems to discover a little more offensive flair.
Skrastins has played for Latvia at the last three IIHF World Championships,
and last year he was the second-highest scoring defenseman on their squad
with three goals in six games. By contrast, he only notched one goal in 82
outings with Nashville in 2000-01.
Maybe he's picked up a few tips from flashier Nashville blueliners like Andy
Delmore and Finland's Kimmo Timonen.
Of course, the 6-1, 208-pound veteran will be happy to defer offensively to
Florida's Sandis Ozolinsh if his countrymen can avoid a Preliminary Round
curtain call and go head to head with the Big Six nations starting February "For our national team, it's the biggest tournament in four years,"

SJ opens round 2 with a bang
Sharks win 5-2 on Marleau's hat trick
4/22/04 - by Mike Lee
You couldn't have scripted a better start for the Sharks and their 2nd round match up with the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night. San Jose struck early and often and when Colorado tried to answer, the Sharks scored some more. The result was a 5-2 white washing at HP Pavilion before a wildly enthusiastic sellout crowd. Sharks captain Patrick Marleau chipped in with his second hat trick of the playoffs to lead the Sharks to an early 1-0 lead in the Western Conference semi-final series with the Avalanche.

Denver Post Sports Writer
In the mid-1990s, young Karlis Skrastins was playing for his hometown team in Riga, Latvia, and beginning to wonder if he ever would get a chance to move on to more prominent and lucrative employment in the hockey world. When 5-year-old Karlis saw a hockey game on television in Riga and convinced his mother, Ieva, to take him to a rink to give the sport a try, the infrastructure was in place - if under the Soviet yoke. So he was able to play, and because he was good, he was nudged up the chain. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Latvia's regained independence, the downside - at least athletically - was the Soviet sports machine also was dismantled. Facilities and financial support were crumbling. It was a small price to pay for the independence of the Baltic nations, among others, but it was affecting the quality of hockey.

Enjoying break, Maurice knew time was up
By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 1/25/2004 When the Carolina Hurricanes were struggling along midway through the 2001-02 season, rumors were rampant that coach Paul Maurice would be fired if his club lost in Florida Dec. 8. The club rallied to win that contest, though, and many more on the way to the franchise's first appearance in the Stanley Cup finals, where the Hurricanes were defeated by the Red Wings. ADVERTISEMENT The following season was a disaster, which often happens to a team coming off a long playoff run. The roster was retooled a bit for this year, and everyone involved was hoping for a turnaround. When it didn't happen, Maurice was let go Dec. 15, in his ninth season behind the bench, and was replaced by former Bruins assistant Peter Laviolette. Prior to Mike Sullivan being hired by the Bruins last June, Maurice was the youngest bench boss in the NHL and also the longest-tenured coach. After giving himself a month off to decompress, Maurice, who turns 37 Friday, said he is back watching hockey and he even did some commentary over the weekend for Hockey Night in Canada. To illustrate just how impressive Maurice's staying power was in an industry that chews up coaches and spits them out, consider that from Nov. 6, 1995 to Dec. 15, 2003 Maurice's term as coach when the franchise was in Hartford and then Carolina Boston had six coaches.

Devils get back at the Flyers
By Associated Press, 4/13/2004 The New Jersey Devils won't give up the Stanley Cup without a fight. ADVERTISEMENT After dropping the opening two games in Philadelphia, the Devils got back into their first-round series with the Flyers last night. Patrik Elias scored twice and Scott Gomez had three assists in a 4-2 victory at East Rutherford, N.J. Rookie Paul Martin and Brian Gionta also scored, and Martin Brodeur made 23 saves for New Jersey. Jeremy Roenick and Tony Amonte scored for the Flyers, who twice blew one-goal leads. The Devils, for 7 on the power play in losing two 3-2 decisions in Philadelphia, scored three times on five extra-man chances to get back into the series. The Devils also had a little luck. Elias's second goal went past Robert Esche off the hip of Flyers defenseman Kim Johnsson with 2:32 left in the second period, giving New Jersey a 3-2 lead. It marked the first time in the series the Devils were ahead. Lightning 3, Islanders
