Czech's bounce US hockey Dream Team

Dream Team: devastated The United States hockey team crashed out of the Winter Olympics when the Czech Republic hammered the all-stars 4-1. The final four have now been decided after Russia beat Belarus4-1; the Czechs will play favourites Canada and Russia will play Finland. Czech Republic 4 USA 1
Hasek (right): star of Czech team The Czech Republic added the final touch to what has been a fairly miserable tournament for the US so-called "dream team". Dominik Hasek was truly inspirational minding the Czech net. US players will probably wake sweating for months to come from the nightmare of peppering Hasek with 39 shots, and beating him only once. "Its unbelievable the confidence you get when there's someone like that behind you," Czech forward Vladimir Ruzicka said of Hasek. The US squad of National Hockey League all-stars were the strongest team coming into the first Olympics for professionals. They return home having won only one in four matches.

Fairytale about Pasi Nurminen
Jani

Date: 16-05-01
Language correction: FlyBear
After a succesfull career and a happy life, Finnish goalkeeper Pasi Nurminen died and went to heaven. At heaven`s gate, God Himself was waiting for Pasi. God says, "Pasi you were such a great goalie that I've given you the best place in heaven." So they walk down the main street of heaven and Pasi sees the houses become more and more beautiful. In every house`s garden, there was the flag of a different country. God says, "This is the home of Tommy Salo" and shows Nurminen a great house with big Swedish flags in the garden and other Swedish flags formed by flowers in the garden.

Czech Republic Beats Russia for Gold
By Rachel Alexander Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, February 23, 1998; Page D1 The Russians were never able to get through Dominik Hasek (right), and the Czechs finally added a gold medal to their Olympic collection. (Stanislav Peska/AP) The 1969 victory was more rife with ideology, coming less than a year after the Soviets rolled tanks into downtown Prague, crushing a budding movement toward democracy. Today's win was more about pride in the Czech Republic, split from Slovakia since 1993, than about defeating the Russians. This was about the accomplishment of a team from a small country, a team with the tournament's best goaltender and one of its better forwards but not much else besides a strong belief in itself. "My parents still talk about the 1969 game," said defenseman Petr Svoboda, who scored the game's only goal midway through the third period. Jaromir Jagr, the team's most recognized player, had come close earlier but hit a post. "Beating the Russians is still a big thing for that generation."

Venues: The Peaks Ice Arena is in Provo, 51 miles from the Olympic village. The E Centre, in West Valley City some 8 miles from the centre of Salt Lake City, is home to the Utah Grizzlies, an International Hockey League team, and holds 10,451 spectators. 1998 Golds: The Czech Republic won the men's tournament while the United States won the women's gold.
Critical Moment: A quick score can come after an end-zone face-off. When an official drops the puck between two opposing players, the offensive player tries to control the puck, pass it to a teammate for a shot on goal. KRT Infractions Players are sent off the ice for two-, five- or 10-minute penalties. If the penalty is serious, the player may be suspended for the remainder of the game. Here are the most common penalties: Tripping: Tripping a player with a stick, foot or hand.

Nagano Olympics...One Year Later
NEW YORK (February 22, 1999) - One year ago today in Nagano, Japan, Buffalo Sabres' netminder Dominik Hasek skated on to the world's biggest sporting stage as the National Hockey League's best goaltender. By the time he left the ice, the 33-year-old had shut out a team comprised of arch rivals from Russia, was an Olympic gold medalist and the Czech Republic's most popular native son. With NHLers participating in the Olympics for the first time, it seems only fitting that it was the stellar play of Hasek and a third-period goal from then-Philadelphia defenseman Petr Svoboda (now with the Tampa Bay Lightning) that led the Czech Republic to a 1-0 victory over Team Russia and its first ever hockey gold medal. The game was scoreless when Svoboda finally broke through at 8:08 of the third period. Off a faceoff, winger Martin Prochazka tapped the puck back to the left point. From there, Svoboda fired a slap shot that deflected off a Russian defender's skate and tipped off goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov's glove before finding the net. Hasek, who stopped all but six of 155 shots he faced in the tournament, finished with 20 saves and avenged his only loss of the tournament, a 2-1 setback to Russia in the final preliminary-round game for both nations.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Enthusiastic Hrudey retires with no regrets San Jose Sharks' goaltender Kelly Hrudey traded in his goalie mask and pads for a microphone. He called it an even swap. Hrudey, 37, closed the book on his 15-year NHL playing career when he announced his retirement on July 30, 1998. But he planned to stay real close to his beloved sport by working as a color commentator for Hockey Night in Canada. "I have no formal training (in broadcasting), but I sure enjoy it," Hrudey said. "I'm going to tackle this as enthusiastically as I have my hockey career." Hrudey, who also played for the New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings, announced his retirement after the Sharks acquired goalie Steve Shields from the Buffalo Sabres. "I have no regrets," Hrudey said at the time. "My retirement is a celebration, not a sad event." The venerable netminder posted a career record of 271-265-88 (wins-losses-ties) and a goals-against-average of 3.43 with 17 career shutouts. He played in the Stanley Cup final in 1993 with the Kings and stopped 73 of 75 shots to lead the New York Islanders to a dramatic 3-2, four-overtime Game 7 victory over the Washington Capitals in the 1987 playoffs. Despite such a long and storied tenure in the NHL, Hrudey said the most memorable moment of his entire career came at the very start. "The No. 1 highlight (was being) told I had made the New York Islanders (in 1983). What a thrill that was! They were four-time defending Stanley Cup champions. I remember going out in the parking lot and raising my arms in the air like in the movie 'Rocky', at the top of the stairs."
