65. UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE (01/21/01)
after playing 35 games with Cincinnati of the American hockey League Anaheim s rambunctiousdefense corps, headed by Vishnevski and young Russian ruslan salei.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Vishnevski an Anaheim hit man Ukrainian Vitaly Vishnevski is not yet a household name to NHL fans, but opponents are very well aware of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks' second-year defenseman. "Number 6, right?" asked newly acquired right-winger Dan Bylsma, who first saw Vishnevski while playing for the rival Los Angeles Kings last season. After all it was a monstrous Vishnevski check that put the hurt on Kings' star Ziggy Palffy in a late-season game. The hit left Palffy with a sprained shoulder that cost him the final 12 games of the season. "Every team you play against, there's a line-up on the board and you go, 'Watch out for this guy,' " Bylsma said. "From that hit on, Vishnevski was one of those guys." Vishnevski, Anaheim's first-round pick (fifth overall) in 1998, arrived in the NHL midway through last season after playing 35 games with Cincinnati of the American Hockey League. A native of Kharkiv, Vishnevski made an immediate mark. In 31 games, he led or co-led the Ducks in hits 16 times; he finished his first season with 113 official hits. "He certainly did a great job for us as a 19-year-old last year," ex-Anaheim coach Craig Hartsburg said. "He played, obviously, very physical and very hard. He's a guy that everybody in this league is going to hate playing against."

In Olympic debut, hockey team is highlight of Ukraine's effort by Andrew Nynka PROVO, Utah - Since its 70-plus athletes entered the Olympic stadium in Salt Lake City to participate in Ukraine's third Winter Games as an independent state, its best results thus far have been in the sport in which Ukraine this year made its Olympic debut: ice hockey. With two wins and one loss in Group B of the hockey competition's preliminary round, Ukraine's record was equal to that of the Belarusian team that emerged atop the group that also included Switzerland and France. In the end, the deciding match-up was Team Ukraine's first game, played against Belarus on February 9. Ukraine lost to Belarus 1-0. In that game goalie Sergei Shabanov of Belarus stopped 17 shots, and Oleg Mikulchik scored during a two-man advantage with 12:11 left to play in the third period. Ukraine's netminder Kostiantyn Simchuk stopped 29 of 30 shots on goal. The result - a one-goal difference - turned out to be the key factor in Belarus' advancement to the next round and Ukraine's relegation to play for ninth place against Latvia. Ukraine won its next two games against Switzerland and France to tie Belarus with four points at the conclusion of Group B preliminary round competition, which is played in a round robin. Belarus won its game against France (3-1), but lost to Switzerland (2-1). Thus, Belarus' victory over Ukraine allowed the Belarusians to move on to play the Russian Federation in the next round.

    Belarus celebrate a famous victory
Belarus 4-3 Sweden Belarus pulled off one of the greatest shocks in the history of Olympic ice hockey as they beat Sweden's "Dream Team" of National Hockey League stars in the quarter-finals. Defenceman Vladimir Kopat scored the winning goal with two minutes and 24 seconds remaining. His shot from beyond the blueline went straight at the face of Swedish netminder Tommy Salo and he could only deflect the puck back into his unguarded net. Belarus had only one NHL player in Ruslan Salei, but they got the better of their millionnaire opponents. Salei said: "I think it's unbelievable, absolutely incredible. Nobody gave us a chance." Sweden are now out of the running for medals in what is being hailed as the greatest Olympic ice hockey upset since the United States beat the Soviet Union in 1980. Czech Republic 0-1 Russia A solitary goal from Maxim Afinogenov was enough to book Russia a place in the Olympic men's ice hockey semi-finals.

Canada ended Belarus's improbable Olympic dream with a convincing, and ultimaately easy, 7-1 win in the first men's ice hockey semi-final. Having failed to set the Games alight, the Canadians, one of the pre-tournament favourites, finally found their rhythm. The goals were shared between seven players and after an early goal in the second period for a 2-1 lead, they were never troubled. Canada will now face the United States in Sunday's final in which they will attempt to win a first Olympic hockey gold since 1952.
Ruslan Salei scored the only Belarus goal
"We have played better and better as the tournament has gone on, just as we had hoped to," said Canada executive director Wayne Gretzky. "We have made the final, that's an accomplishment in this field, but not the ultimate goal." The key to the win was Canada's offensive line play, with Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux and Paul Kariya combining for seven points.

We have also heard that Boughner is definitely on his way out along with maybe O'Neill. I was wondering why we haven't heard anything about the Ducks or Columbus when it comes to trade rumors. Neither of these teams is going to make the playoffs and both have some assets that I am sure that they would like to get rid of. Do you think the names Richardson, Lachance, Salei, Ozolinsh, or Carney would interest anybody? Starting with Anaheim, they have a team payroll that sits at 54.4 million; that is a lot of money for a team that will be watching the playoffs from the comforts of their own homes. Seeing as how defense wins championships, the Ducks have a few D'men that are sure to attract some attention. 1. Ruslan Salei, a group II free agent who is currently making 1.75 million.
