Numbers force Oilers to trade Weight
EDMONTON (July 1, 2001) - Doug Weight was traded by Edmonton to the St. Louis Blues on Sunday in a five-player deal the Oilers made because they could not afford their All-Star center. Weight, the Oilers' top scorer for seven of the last eight seasons, and forward Michel Riesen were sent to St. Louis for winger Jochen Hecht , center Marty Reasoner and defenseman Jan Horacek. "It was emotional last night and it continues to be as I talk to my teammates," Weight said during a conference call Sunday. "Nine years is a third of my life." "But I don't want to stress my disappointment," he added. "I'm going to a wonderful organization." The 30-year-old Weight is a restricted free agent who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in 2002. Weight has a five-year contract with St. Louis that will pay him $9 million the first year, Sportsnet.ca reported. His salary was $4.3 million in 2000-01.

ALL-STAR FORWARD TRADED TO EDMONTON OILERS
‘Cats Center and Defenseman Part of Deal for Weight, Riesen
Worcester, MA-The Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League (AHL) learned today that IceCats center Marty Reasoner, defenseman Jan Horacek and former ‘Cats winger, Jochen Hecht, have been traded by their National Hockey League (NHL) affiliate, the St. Louis Blues, to the Edmonton Oilers. The Blues in return received center Doug Weight and right wing Michel Riesen.
A native of Rochester, New York, Reasoner played in 34 games for the IceCats this season. During the 2000-01 season, the 6’ 203 pound center recorded 17 goals, 18 assists and 25 penalty minutes: 34(17/18/35). A member of the 2000 AHL All-Star PlanetUSA team for the All-Star Classic in Rochester, he was named PlanetUSA’s Most Valuable Player. The 24 year old center has seen action with both the Blues and the IceCats in his three year professional career. In all, the former 1996 first round selection by the Blues, Marty played in 122 regular season games for the IceCats, recording 57 goals, 68 assists and 88 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 95 regular season games for the Blues, notching 47 points.
Horacek, a native of Benesov, Czech Republic, was limited to just 11 regular season games with the IceCats this season due to a wrist injury. The 22 year old bone-crushing defenseman skated in 132 regular season games with Worcester. He concluded his IceCats career with two goals, 22 assists and 284 penalty minutes: 132(2/22/24)284. The 6’4, 213 lbs. blueliner was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round, 98th overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

Players with a dash (-) after their name were unsigned as of 8/15/00. If you are turning in your draft list by e-mail you can just download this player list, and then cut and paste the player's entire line to your draft list (ending up with a draft list with players listed in the order you want to draft them). No. 1 pick Thornton rolls with the hunches
By Alan Robinson, Associated Press writer
PITTSBURGH The Bruins don't envision Joe Thornton as another Wayne Gretzky, even if the 18-year-old threatened some of the Great One's junior scoring records.
They'll be perfectly satisfied if the first player chosen in yesterday's NHL draft is another Eric Lindros, a physical presence with a deft scoring touch who revives a floundering franchise.
Thornton, whose nickname is Big Bird but perhaps now should be the Big Hope, won't be 18 until next month, but still expects to be wearing the Bruins' No. 6 jersey in October.
"I'll go back to (juniors) if they want me to, but I want to play in the NHL," said Thornton, who stood out even on the crowded Civic Arena floor because of his size (6-foot-4) and Mark Fidrych-like curly blond hair.
Thornton, so clearly the top player in a talent-deep draft that the Bruins identified him as their choice weeks ago, was rated as the best player available since Alexandre Daigle in 1993 and, before that, Lindros in 1991.
NHL Central Scouting director Frank Bonello called Thornton "a franchise player ... a complete player at 17, if there is such a thing."
