This time last season, the Mighty Ducks found themselves in control of a playoff berth. This year, they're a loss (and a win by St. Louis) away from being eliminated. So what happened? First and foremost has to be the poor early season performance of goalie J.S. Giguere. He was wildly inconsistent and it seemed the rest of the league had figured out the ways to score on him. It's possible that his getting married distracted him. Maybe the enormity of what he accomplished last spring finally caught up to him. Either way, he had a forgettable first half. In the past few weeks, however, he has regained his playoff MVP form. Unfortunately, it looks like it's too little, too late. Injuries have also plagued the Ducks' season. While nowhere near as bad as local rival Los Angeles, the Ducks started the season without veteran Keith Carney. Things didn't improve when Sandis Ozolinsh was lost to a strained shoulder injury. In addition, Rob Niedermayer missed all but one game in December and has been on and off the injured list since. Without these regulars, Anaheim hasn't been able to settle into where they left off last season. Despite leading the team in scoring, Sergei Fedorov is only now settling in with the team and showing what made him successful in Detroit. As the season progressed, Fedorov has become what the Ducks were looking for when they signed him as a free agent. There have been bright spots, though. The exceptional play of Martin Gerber has kept this season from being abysmal. Vaclav Prospal, while slow out of the gate, has been a force as the season has wound down and is proving that he can play outside of Tampa Bay. Joffrey Lupul has also played well in his rookie campaign, keeping the future bright in Orange County.

THE WEEKLY TIRADE By Scotty Kowall Every Monday In Comedyzine Thank God. It's Hockey Season! With apologies to atheists. After watching the New Jersey Devils claim the Stanley Cup and having to endure a boring sports summer of baseball (The world's slowest moving sport) and a Summer Olympics that was broadcast after the results were known, the NHL is back, proof there is a God... This year looks to be interesting. The Devils are the team to beat. The young guys on the team learnt how to win and look for them to keep on winning. A team with solid defense and explosive speed and scoring ability... Last year the Flyers led the league in soap opera plot lines. There are some this year too. Can goaltender Brian Boucher have a good sophomore season? What will the team get for injury prone super star Eric Lindros? Can they win in the regular season without Big E? I think there will be a drop in performance but they will definitely make the playoffs and that is all that counts... The Rangers brought in the two saviors Mark Messier and Glen Sather. It will take more than those two to make the Rangers a competitor. Messier once delivered on a promised cup victory. Only a true Ranger fan would believe Messier's promise to be in the playoffs this year. The Eastern Conference is tough and they still will not be good enough to make the playoffs... The Pens are an improved team if and only if they work out their goaltender situation. This team is led by Jaromir Jagr, currently the world's best player. The heavy European roster makes them dangerous with the puck if not with their checks. If they don't win the cup look for them to make Vaclav Havel the team president next year. Hockey Is A Big Deal In Latvia, hockey is much like a religion. It is what football is to England. Hockey is national past time. It has always been. When I was little, my father watched every single game on television. It was the time when everyone needed to keep all non-hockey related conversations outside. A few times he and I went to see the game live. I remember watching Dinamo Riga, our local club play big starts of the Red Army club. Some of the hockey players went on to become stars in the National Hockey League: Arturs Irbe and Sandis Ozolinsh.
