Bobby Orr
Bobby Orr was born on March 20, 1948, in the town of Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. He first caught the eye of a Boston Bruin scout in 1960 as a 12 year old defenseman playing in a bantam tournament. At age 14 the Bruins had already signed him to a junior contract that saw him begin play with the Oshawa Generals. Orr would go on to set a new record for points by a defenseman in the Ontario League. He played in Oshawa until he was 18, when he signed with the Bruins to play in the National Hockey League. Orr's first season saw him score 41 points, win the Calder trophy and be named as a Second Team All-Star. Bobby Orr had an enormous impact on the game of hockey, pioneering the "mobile" or "rushing defenseman". His blazing speed, quickness, and a knack for scoring changed the face of hockey by bringing offense from the defenseman. Orr would win the Norris Trophy as best defenseman for eight straight years, and added two Art Ross trophies for scoring titles. His first Art Ross was in 1970 as he became the only defenseman to lead the league in scoring, and he would repeat the feat in 1975. Orr also led the Boston Bruins to their first Stanley Cup in 29 years when they won the championship in 1970. The followin season saw him score 33 goals and 102 assists for 139 points, one of six seasons where the Bruin defenseman scored over 100 points. His record for goals by a defenseman stood until 198x when Paul Coffey scored 48 goals with the 1985-86 Edmonton Oilers.

THE HOME OF BOBBY ORR

Welcome to my site dedicated to the greatest hockey player of all-time, number 4, Bobby Orr. He changed the face of hockey forever. He became the fourth forward, but with his blazing speed was always back to defend the Bruins goal. He helped the Bruins win two Stanley Cups, collecting many awards and all-star nominations along the way. It was said that if you wanted to stop the Bruins, you had to stop Bobby Orr. Unfortunately that's what happened. Several knee operations ended his career at an early age. I hope you enjoy my tribute to Bobby Orr and please let me know of any way I can improve my site.

Bobby Orr: A Worthwhile Investment Contrary to popular belief, everything about the National Hockey League and the Boston Bruins did not change the moment Bobby Orr pulled on a uniform in the fall of 1966. It took another year or so for that to happen. As an 18-year-old, Bobby Orr earned top rookie honors in 1966-67. Orr wasn't even a teenager when the Bruins first saw him, a Pee-Wee dominating games against older Bantam players in Parry Sound, Ontario. A small investment to sponsor Orr's team made him the future property of the Bruins, and was probably the best money the franchise ever spent. An 18-year-old defenseman with a crew cut at the start of 1966-67, Orr and rookie coach Harry Sinden weren't able to get Boston into the playoffs for the first time since 1958-59. The Bruins finished last in the NHL's final season as a six-team league, but Orr gave Boston fans hints of all that was to come. His 13-goal, 41-point performance over 61 games (Chicago's Pierre Pilote was the only defenseman with more points that year) was good enough to win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year, plus land him a spot on the league's second team All-Star team. Not everything, however, was positive. Orr suffered a knee injury near the end of his rookie season, and it set off a chain reaction of operations that would not just cut into part of his 1967-68 season, but ultimately cut short his career.

Boston Bruins Gallery Wayne Gretzky the greatest? different era Well, maybe there are are few other players that are comparable for sure. You may say:"Wayne Gretzky has 62 NHL records!" If stats are your thing, go watch baseball. (also a great sport) The game was played a lot more physical when Orr played. Watch some tapes of games from the early 70's. You will see that there's more to it than meets the eye. Wayne Gretzky was a great player. It is a known fact that he played the game a little softer than others and players didn't hit him the way Pat Quinn (of the Maple Leafs) hit Bobby Orr a few years back.(knocked him out cold) As impressive as his stats are, I don't believe that it can truly tell how great a player he was. Maybe the fact that he is the only defenceman to win the Art Ross Trophy (most points in an N.H.L. season) and did it twice.
