Neely turns out for NHL Skate opening By Glenn Sabalewski Staff Writer EXETER - Cam Neely may become an assistant coach in the National Hockey League one day, but you don't have to spend much time with the former Boston Bruins right wing to realize he still looks and feels like a hockey player. Now age 33, Neely, who appeared at NHL Skate at Exeter's grand opening yesterday, retired in August 1996. A hip injury forced the decision to end a playing career that made him an NHL All-Star five times. His unique combination of scoring (395 goals and 299 assists in 726 games) and punishing physical style made him extremely popular with Bruins fans. Many female fans made no secret they were attracted to the 6-foot-1, 218-pound power forward's good looks. Neely made a brief comeback attempt with the Bruins last fall. He even skated with the team in training camp. But he stopped when it quickly became apparent that his body wasn't willing to cooperate. Yesterday, Neely was asked if the experience gave him closure in terms of his playing days. "To a degree maybe, but not really," Neely said. "Would I like to still be playing in the NHL? Absolutely. Do I think I could still play skill-wise if it wasn't for my hip? Yes. But the fact remains: that part of my life is over."

Advertisement Neely's No. 8 was raised to the rafters Monday night before the Bruins played Buffalo. He came out of the locker room, after taking his jersey from captain Joe Thornton, and skated a lap around the ice. "It was an incredible feeling, the response from the crowd," the 38-year-old Neely said. "I was just trying to keep it together. That was really emotional just doing the lap and seeing the response from everybody. It's something I'll never forget." The injury problems that eventually forced a premature retirement began in 1991 when he hurt his thigh during the Eastern Conference finals. Neely played in just 22 games over the next two seasons because of thigh and knee injuries. He finally returned for the 1993-94 season, when he scored his 50th goal in the 44th game. Wayne Gretzky was the only player to reach the mark faster.

Cam Neely Cam Neely is the ultimate Boston Bruin. Character, perseverance, team work, physical play, winning - all can be used to describe both Neely and the B's. Cam Neely actually started his NHL career with his hometown Vancouver Canucks when they made him their first round selection. Neely probably turned out to be their best first round selection ever. Too bad they traded him away so early in his career. The trade happened on Neely's 21st birthday. In hindsight it was the best present he probably ever got. The Canucks trade him and a first round pick (Glen Wesley) for Barry Pederson, who at the time was a star in the league but suffered a major injury and never did regain his form. Neely became the fan's favorite. Cam would score 36, 40, and 38 goals in his first 3 seasons with Boston. He was the ultimate power forward of his time. His hands were as soft as a feather when he handled the puck, yet hard as a rock when handled an enemy. Defensemen feared going back into their corner to chase a loose puck knowing Neely was right behind them. Cam would go on to record to straight 50 goal seasons before he suffered a major blow to his knee. During the Bruins Conference Final against Pittsburgh, a cheap hit on Cam's thigh began Cam's injury woe's that would plague him for the rest of his tragically shortened career.

Often hungry, physically imposing at 6-1 and 220 pounds, he was dangerous. Cam Neely could hurt people by throwing his weight around, or move in for an instinctive kill with a deceptively hard and accurate slap shot. His on-ice style produced a new hockey term, now commonly used: "power forward." In his nights patrolling a right-wing beat for the Bruins between 1986 and '96, it was only one of Neely's lasting legacies. He brought a rare package to the Boston pro hockey scene, a get-out-of-my-way, body-bouncing terror with an unusual ability to score. Stop, think, and compare for a moment. Here was a player who wore his heart under that spoked-B crest on his chest, had fire in the belly, made five comebacks from prolonged injuries, and still clawed out three 50-goal seasons. In one way or another, his style of play encompassed at least one of the qualities possessed by each of the nine predecessors he'll join, legendary players who previously have had their golden Bruins discs hung high above center ice.. Wrapped within this grizzly on skates was the grit of Eddie Shore (No. 2) and Milt Schmidt (No. 15); a knack for scoring like Johnny Bucyk (No. 9) and Phil Esposito (No. 7); the resilience of Ray Bourque (No. 77) and Dit Clapper (No. 5); the dignity of Lionel Hitchman (No. 3); plus the feisty willingness of Terry O'Reilly (No. 24).
