NHL BEAT
By Bob Duff WINGS STATS NHL STANDINGS Flames' Oliwa loves knuckling down on his job When the topic is fisticuffs, Krzysztof Oliwa is all ears. The Calgary Flames enforcer will drop everything to discuss dropping the gloves. Some hockey players fight for a living. Oliwa lives for the fighting. Believe Oliwa when he says he knows fighting. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound left-winger from Tychy, Poland, led the National Hockey League with 31 fights this season. His fists are not only a deterrent when deployed, they are often an offensive weapon for the Flames. Calgary was treading water at 3-3 and without a fight entering an Oct. 25, game at Edmonton. Two seconds after the opening faceoff, Oliwa and Edmonton counterpart Georges Laraque threw down their gloves. Calgary went on to post a 4-2 victory. The Flames took a point in 19 of their next 25 games.
The thought that they might be required to throw them with Oliwa is enough to throw most players off their game.

No More "Mr. Nice Guy"
Scrappy Predators are clawing their way into playoff contention...
Over the past five seasons, the Predators have consistently been one of the fewest penalized teams in the league. Five games into the season, the Predators are clearly ridding themselves of the "nice guy" image.
"To play a physical game on a regular basis takes a different mentality,” GM David Poile said. “We are more physical and it has proven to be good for our team. We have shown some toughness, but the challenge is to make it a regular part of our game."
The Predators led the league in team fighting majors after the first week of the season. In fact, Wade Brookbank currently shares the league lead with four fighting majors.
Establishing a physical presence in a game means more than simply "dropping the gloves." Strong play serves to protect a team's skilled players and will disrupt the other team's playmaking and puck control. Many Nashville fans are not accustomed to this form of face-to-face ice dancing. "Win or lose, people will like our team. We will win some respect around the league," added Coach Barry Trotz.
Michigan State Trio
Veteran left wing Rem Murray, right wing Adam Hall, and recent call-up defenseman Andrew Hutchinson all share the same alma mater. Could this be a coincidence? The Predators scouting crew obviously respects the talent produced at Michigan State. While Hutchinson and Hall were teammates drafted in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft (2nd round), both Murray and Hall share the distinction of being named captain of their college team. Take note of this trio; they are full of character and leadership.

SOME THOUGHTS ON THE TRADING DEADLINE The trading deadline has passed us by, and many NHL General Managers have a two-part question on their minds. Here it is: "Have I made the right move to acquire the final piece of the Stanley Cup championship puzzle, or did I have an opportunity to acquire that piece and not take advantage of the opportunity?"
Of course, hindsight is 20-20, and we won't have the full hindsight until the end of June. However, at first look, there were some interesting moves at the deadline, and some interesting non-moves, too.
For instance, the Sharks did not make a move at the deadline. GM Dean Lombardi had what he thought was an opportunity to bolster his depth with a non-marquee deal, but according to reports, the chance was taken off the table by the other team at the last moment. This sort of thing happens all the time, as individual organizations assess, reassess, and re-reassess their situations and make a final decision based on their knowledge at that moment as to what's best for their club. In the meantime, the Sharks should feel good about their hockey team. Yes, there are some injuries at the moment, but doesn't it ALWAYS happen that way, AFTER the trading deadline passes? I think that it must be some conspiracy by the hockey gods to drive GM's, coaches, broadcasters, writers and fans nuts to see the injuries occur now.

Eric, Trottier on same side Team up, talk things out By JOHN DELLAPINA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Rangers need Eric Lindros to rebound from being benched. Eric Lindros stepped off the practice ice dripping blood, a Rangers coach having clipped him on the bridge of his nose. No, Lindros and Bryan Trottier didn't have it out yesterday at the MSG Training Center in Greenburgh. On the contrary, following an ice-side, heart-to-heart talk convened while Lindros sat atop the boards, the rookie head coach and his star player teamed up to win a post-practice game of half-ice Two Pass. (Lindros set up Trottier for two goals and tipped in a Trottier shot for the gamer). It was during that game that assistant coach Terry O'Reilly, the Boston franchise record-holder for penalty minutes, cut Lindros while trying to drive to the net. Old habits apparently die hard. But not new grudges, to hear Trottier and Lindros tell it. Having benched the slumping Lindros for the final 14 minutes of Sunday night's 3-2 Garden loss to St. Louis - after deploying him for just 1:05 in the second period - Trottier insisted yesterday that he wasn't angry at his No. 1 center. And Lindros insisted there was no problem between him and his coach. "If I'm angry at somebody, I tell them," Trottier said. "That isn't the case.

Holdout Boston defenseman Kyle McLaren was traded to San Jose on Thursday in a three-team deal that sent forward Niklas Sundstrom to Montreal. SUCCESSFUL HOMECOMING Rangers goalie Mike Dunham faced Nashville for the first time since being traded to New York on Dec. 12 and made 28 saves in a 4-2 victory Thursday night. Predators keep Bruins on skids
By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 11/29/2003 The Bruins stopped short of calling their recent skid a full-blown slump. ADVERTISEMENT A mini slump? Maybe. Feel free to argue the proper terminology. However, the club can't deny its fortunes have clearly taken a turn for the worse. The latest example was yesterday's 2-1 loss to the Nashville Predators at the FleetCenter. All the scoring came in the first period. In the final 40 minutes, the Bruins outshot the visitors by a healthy 27-18 margin but were thwarted by the efforts of goalie Tomas Vokoun (32 saves) and handcuffed by their multiple trips to the penalty box. The Bruins have dropped three in a row two in regulation and one in overtime and have only one victory in their last five outings (1-2-0-2). "It's not that we played horrible," said right wing Glen Murray, whose line with Joe Thornton and Mike Knuble was the best combination on either side. "It's just that we can't seem to get a win. We know we're still playing well, we just have to get a win somehow."
