The way the city immersed itself in the Flames' battle for a championship, and the wild celebrations their victories inspired along Electric Avenue. And even if he had begun to get a bit murky on a few of the details about that heady spring 15 years ago, Calgary's improbable surge to the 2004 Stanley Cup final would have rekindled them. "With the fans going wild and all," Mullen said, "it's deja vu all over again." There are a few differences. Penguins assistant coach Joe Mullen had a chance to be on the 1980 "Miracle" U.S. Olympic team. But his father had a stroke, and Mullen turned pro to help support his family. Harvard freshman defenseman Dylan Reese was selected to the U.S. team that struck gold at the World Junior Championships this winter. But Reese developed a herniated disc in his back and had to miss the tournament. Things worked out OK for Mullen. He won three Stanley Cups, including two with the Penguins. He became the first U.S.-born player to get 500 goals and 1,000 assists. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Reese, a New York Rangers draft pick, wouldn't mind having a similar career. "I'd take that any day," Reese said. "He's one of the best American players ever." Mullen sheds no tears when he looks back at having missed Lake Placid.

AHS also defeated Marblehead, 5-3, tied Masconomet Regional of Topsfield, 3-3, and lost a 7-0 decision to Belmont High. Overall AHS is 8-4-3 including 4-3-3 in NCL Division 1 play. Basketball, hockey, track and swimming will start regular season play within the next two weeks, while gymnastics and skiing traditionally begin in early January. n n n o Girls basketball is coming off its most successful season in school history, the 24-1 record including a first-ever State Division 1 championship to go with Merrimack Valley Conference 1, Division 1 North and Eastern Mass. titles. The memorable last-second (literally) 48-47 state final win over Minnechaug Regional at the Worcester Centrum is still indelibly etched in the memory, along with the post-game celebration at the Dunn Gym. Several key components from that team graduated last spring, but the Lady Warriors return nine veterans including All-Scholastic Holy Cross recruit Ashley McLaughlin, Matia Kostakis, Meagan Merinder and Jackie Powers. o Boys hoop finished 18-5 last year and returns 10 of 13 players, including the devastating backcourt combo of soon-to-be all-time school scoring leader Chris Vetrano and Jack Barrett.

Coming to CBC in September is Making the Cut , hockey's version of reality television. On the line are six spots at NHL training camps in 2005. If you're a man or woman aged 19 or over and don't have a professional hockey contract, you can take aim at a dream almost every Canadian child fantasizes about – making the NHL. Over 12,000 players are expected to come to the tryouts in seven Canadian cities. The top 68 will move on to attend a two week training camp under the watchful eyes of NHL coaches Scotty Bowman and Mike Keenan. Of those 68, just six players will earn the ultimate prize – an invitation to an NHL training camp. "This is a project about dreams and hopes, a second chance to make the NHL," said Keenan. "Look at the undrafted NHL players of today who made it only through a second chance."
