Calgary The Flames nearly stole the show when they made two late-afternoon trades on Saturday. They dumped locker-room disaster Valerie Bure and defenceman Jason Wiemer to Florida for Rob Niedermeyer and a second-round pick. The Flames give up quality defenceman Wiemer while they had been looking to send Bure out of town for a long time. To get Niedermayer was a huge bonus. Hockey: NHL
By The Canadian Press The Olympic men's hockey tournament only happens once every four years so it's easy to understand why it gets so much attention. Canada's NHL stars against the world it doesn't get any better than this for hockey fans, many of whom will have to devise ways to escape work in time to relocate in front of television sets to take in the country's opener against Sweden at 4 p.m. EST, Friday, Feb. 15, in Salt Lake City, Utah. It'll by anybody's guess what the NHL playoff picture will look like when the league takes its Olympic schedule break. The Toronto Maple Leafs are showing they are good enough to take a serious run at the Stanley Cup, the Montreal Canadiens are vastly improved, and the Ottawa Senators are solid once again. In the west, the Vancouver Canucks struggle to play .500 hockey, while the success of the Edmonton Oilers and the resurgence of the Calgary Flames will make this a winter to remember for Albertans. As 2001 slips away, let's look back at some of hockey's biggest happenings during the year.

To the Edmonton Oilers, that you keep making your team our favorite by continuing to trot out a lineup full of ex-college skaters - guys like Carter, Comrie, Conklin, Horcoff, Marchant, Reasoner, Swanson and York. To Erik Cole of the Carolina Hurricanes, that your team goes deep into the postseason so we can see the best playoff beard since Lanny McDonald one more time. To another Hurricane, Dave Tanabe, that you worry less about your contract and more about your performance on the ice. To the designer of this site, Chicago Wolves defenseman Mike Weaver, that you get a call from Atlanta general manager Don Waddell real soon. By the way, we like club-level seats. To Dan Hinote of the Colorado Avalanche, that you continue to do the Army hockey program proud.

    HISTORY

WOLVERINES CAPTURE 1998 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN THRILLING 3-2 OVERTIME VICTORY
    BOSTON
The Michigan Wolverines captured their second National Championship in three seasons, both in overtime, and NCAA record ninth in program history, with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the Boston College Eagles in front of a NCAA Final Four record 18,276 fans in the Fleet Center. The Wolverines received a great game from freshman Mark Kosick, who scored two goals, and outstanding goaltending by senior Marty Turco, who made 28 saves for his second national title, but the hero of the game was freshman Josh Langfeld, who scored the title clinching goal with 2:09 left in the first overtime period. Following a Boston College two-on-one opportunity deep in the Michigan zone, the Wolverines cleared the zone and worked the puck in the corner to the left of the Boston College goal. Chris Fox took a pass from Scott Matzka deep in the corner and held the puck until he received support from Langfeld. Langfeld took the drop pass and, from the left wing boards, wristed what looked to be a harmless shot into the short side of the net for his 19th goal of the season and a goal that set off a wild celebration on the ice. Turco turned aside four great Eagles scoring chances in the overtime session alone as he captured all-NCAA Tournament and Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Twenty-five seconds into the overtime session, BC forward Brian Gionta unleashed a slap shot from the slot, resulting in a great Turco pad save. Boston College then hit the crossbar and post on opportunities 8:00 and 10:40 into the extra session, before getting its final opportunity 33 seconds before Langfeld scored the game winner.

    History
Founded in 1947, the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) began choosing men's All-America hockey teams in 1958. The term "All-America" is actually a bit misleading, because two teams are chosen, one from the east and one from the west. Several times, one of the teams has had a player or two more than the other. The AHCA began choosing women's All-America teams in 2000. The women's teams are not regionally divided. Top of Page
