Chris Chelios History Of World Hockey Amazon.com Mike Modano Mike Modano was born on June 7, 1970 in Livonia, Michigan, USA. He was an All-Star playing his junior hockey with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League and was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars as the first overall pick in the 1988 NHL amateur entry draft. He became only the second American to be drafted first overall and by 1989 he was a regular contributer to the North Stars team. He averaged almost a point per game in his rookie year with 75 points and was second in voting for the Calder trophy to Sergei Makarov of the Calgary Flames. He continued to produce for the North Stars, notching 20 points in the 1991 playoffs as he led Minnesota all the way to the Stanley Cup final. Modano led the North Stars in points from 1991-93 and as the team moved south to Dallas, Modano came through with a 50 goal, 93 point season in 1993-94. The 50 goal season set a franchise record for Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars centers and Modano was well on his way to be the much needed pivot in Dallas. He has been one of the most consistent NHL performers throughout the 1990s. The latter half of the decade saw Modano continue to work on his overall game, turning out to be more of a complete hockey player. He led the Dallas Stars to the franchise's first ever Stanley Cup win in 1999. Modano has also represented the United States in several international hockey tournaments. He is a two time World Juniors, World Championships and Canada Cup participant. He played on the gold medal winning American team at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and was also part of the second place Olympic team in 2002 at Salt Lake City.

His poetic rhythm and his uncanny ability to be at the right place at the right time often astound those who watch him play. His Stanley Cup Championship Ring is testament that Modano has reached the pinnacle of professional achievement envied by many in the sports world. And for hundreds of children at Jonathan’s Place, Modano is a godsend because he showed up at the right time in their lives - and changed their destiny. Growing up in Livonia, Michigan, with two sisters and caring parents, Modano enjoyed athletic success early in life. As an antidote for his hyperactivity, Modano’s parents, Mike and Karen, enrolled him in pee-wee hockey at the age of seven. Soon, he was spending countless hours in a makeshift rink constructed in the backyard, and hockey pucks began to destroy their basement as his parents became goalies, shielded only by a catcher’s mask and a trashcan lid. By the age of 16, Modano had developed into a quality athlete. In 1986, he was drafted to play junior hockey for the Prince Albert Raiders in Canada. He stayed at the home of Carol and Ralph Ring while attending high school and playing for the Raiders. After seeing him play, the Rings knew immediately that Modano was something special and was going places. With the teachings of his parents and the guidance of the Rings, Modano endured the pressure of his success during his phenomenal rise to the top of the hockey draft rankings. Then, in 1988, the young baby-faced lad with braces and peach fuzz who “skated like the wind” became the number one draft pick in the NHL and joined the Minnesota North Stars.
