Hockey Digest

HERE'S THE SITUATION: You're an NHL player on one of the best teams in the league. Your team recently won the Stanley Cup and is well on its way toward earning another. Nothing could be better, you think. But then you are suddenly deemed expendable for the betterment of the organization. You're traded in a package that brings one of the league's best players to your now former team, while sending you to a franchise that not only has never won a Stanley Cup but, at the point you join them, hasn't locked up a playoff spot. Welcome to the NHL. The aforementioned scenario happened to two talented young players last spring, Colorado Avalanche winger Adam Deadmarsh and defenseman Aaron Miller. The Avs decided to ship the duo to the Los Angeles Kings for Rob Blake and rookie Steven Reinprecht.

Miller Repeat POTY, Mason Honored By CCHA
by Paula C. Weston /CCHA Correspondent For the second straight year, Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller was named the league's Player of the Year. Alaska-Fairbanks head coach Guy Gadowsky is the 2001-02 Coach of the Year, and Western Michigan's Pat Dwyer was named Rookie of the Year. The evening also included a moving tribute to MSU head coach Ron Mason, who is stepping down at the end of the season to become Michigan State's athletic director. ADVERTISEMENT
In a video clip, Red Berenson, head coach of MSU archrival Michigan, joked that Mason has been promising to take him fishing for a number years. "Now that he's retiring, maybe he'll actually do it," said Berenson. On receiving the award, Mason talked about the connection between professional and college hockey in Michigan, and said, "I think hockey in particular, is a really solid small family." Other highlights included the presentation of Best Defensive Forward to UAF's Bobby Andrews, who said, "I'd really like to thank my old man for preaching that [defensive side of hockey]."

  • To Paul Kariya of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, that you keep your stick on the ice, because new teammate Adam Oates will find your tape. To the Edmonton Oilers, that you keep making your team our favorite by continuing to trot out a lineup full of ex-college skaters - guys like Carter, Comrie, Conklin, Horcoff, Marchant, Reasoner, Swanson and York. To Erik Cole of the Carolina Hurricanes, that your team goes deep into the postseason so we can see the best playoff beard since Lanny McDonald one more time. To another Hurricane, Dave Tanabe, that you worry less about your contract and more about your performance on the ice. To the designer of this site, Chicago Wolves defenseman Mike Weaver, that you get a call from Atlanta general manager Don Waddell real soon. By the way, we like club-level seats. To Dan Hinote of the Colorado Avalanche, that you continue to do the Army hockey program proud.

Pandolfo, Special Teams Lead Terriers Past Mavericks
Senior left wing Mike Pandolfo (Burlington) scored a pair of goals and the Terrier hockey team tied a single-game high this season with three power play goals en route to a 4-1 win over host University of Nebraska-Omaha on Thursday night (December 20th).
For the nation's seventh-ranked Terriers, it was their third straight win as they improved their overall record to 11-3-1, while the Mavericks slipped to a 9-8-2. The two teams will conclude their two-game series on Friday night (December 21st).
It was the second time in three games that Pandolfo had a pair of goals as he also scored twice in the Terriers' 5-2 win over the University of Massachusetts/Amherst on December 7th. He now has five goals in his last four games, while, overall, he has at least one goal in nine of 15 games this season.
Both his goals on Thursday night came in the third period as he put a close game out of reach. With the Terriers leading by a slim one-goal margin, 2-1, entering the final period, Pandolfo scored his first goal off a pretty drop pass by freshman defenseman Bryan Miller (Wayne, NJ). The goal came at 5:38 of the final period, and, as it turned out, it was the team's only even strength goal of the game.

Former Wildcat Ty Conklin named to Team USA for 2004 World Cup of Hockey
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. USA Hockey today named 26 players, including 14 members of the silver-medal winning 2002 U.S. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team, and 13 returners from the 1996 squad that raised the World Cup of Hockey trophy, to the United States roster that will compete at the World Cup of Hockey 2004.
The U.S. is the defending champion of the World Cup of Hockey, having defeated Canada, 5-2, in the third game of a best-of-three final series in 1996, which was the last time the event took place. The World Cup of Hockey 2004 will be held August 30-September 14 across North America and Europe.
"Our goal was to assemble the ideal team for a seven-game playoff series in which every game is a seventh game," said Pleau. "We examined a number of factors including experience, youth, energy, speed and versatility, while considering an overall team chemistry that allows us to gel as we move through the tournament. We are very pleased with those we have selected to represent the United States, and excited about the challenge of defending the championship in the World Cup of Hockey."

CAMBRIDGE, MA - - The Harvard men's hockey team got a goals from four different players in posting a 4-2 victory over Vermont at the Bright Hockey Center. Propelled by a goal and an assist from senior captain Dominic Moore (Thornhill, ONT), the Crimson improved to 2-1-0 on the season. Vermont falls to 2-4-2 and 0-2-0 in the ECAC. The Crimson took a 1-0 lead in the first frame on Dan Murphy's (North Andover, MA) first collegiate goal. Tyler Kolarik and took a shot from the left side, which was saved by goalie Travis Russell (Essex Junction, VT). The rebound went right to the stick of Brett Nowak (New Haven, CT), whose shot rang off the post and out in front for a crashing Murphy, who potted the tally at 6:30. As it did the night before, the Crimson struck for three tallies in the second frame, beginning with a Moore power play tally at 7:36. It was the 100th point of Moore's career, making him the first Harvard player to reach career point #100 since his brother, Steve '01, joined the exclusive company two seasons ago. Aaron Kim (Deerfield, IL) gave the home team a 3-0 lead at 14:26, flying airborne across the crease and tipping in his first of the season off a rebound of a Rob Fried (Macon, GA) shot. Dennis Packard (Kingston, PA) got the third in the flurry of goals, burying a slapshot just over two minutes later.

Burlington, VT - Sophomore Dov Grumet-Morris (Evanston, IL) made 33 saves, including stoning a penalty shot in the third period, to help carry the Harvard men's hockey team to a 5-2 victory at the University of Vermont on Friday evening. The Crimson improves to 18-8-1 overall, and picks up its 16th win in ECAC play. Coupled with a loss by Yale, the Crimson clinches at least second place in the ECAC standings. Harvard took a 2-0 lead in the first half of the opening frame by continuing its strong special teams play. With Rob Flynn (Canton, MA) in the box for interference, Aaron Kim (Deerfield, IL) and Rob Fried (Macon, GA) combined for the Crimson's sixth shorthanded tally of the season. Just minutes later, the Crimson converted on a five-on-three, when Tim Pettit's (Seattle, WA) slapshot from the point was tipped home by Brett Nowak (New Haven, CT) for the 2-0 advantage.
