Now, an injury has forced him to abandon that dream and turn professional. IN January of 2004, Casal was hurt durring the U.S. National Championships, and will not be able to make the Olympic team. Instead 18-year-old Junior Welterweight turned professional in March, signing a multi year contract with manager Shelly Finkel. Durring a sucessful amateur career, Casal won the 2002 National Junior Olympics the 2003 "under 19" World Chamtpionship and several New York State Golden Gloves Tiltles. None of the Buffalo/Rochester area sailors managed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in recent trials at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Houston, Texas. In Florida the weekend of 3-21-4, Kathleen Tocke and Jodie Swanson finished 4th in the Yngling Class and 5th in the European Class respectively. Both are members of the storied Buffalo Canoe Club. Also missing the cut were Cory Sertl of Rochester who was a member of Jodie Swanson's crew, and Kurt Taulbee of Williamsville, who finished 12th in the Laser Class last November in Houston.

You Are Here: Journal Home Volume 131, Issue 33 Sports T UESDAY, F EBRUARY I SSUE V OLUME Miller Time T O P S T O R Y - By Aaron Miller, Columnist The search for sports stories of significance can be a difficult and disillusioning one. And last Saturday afternoon, it led me to Kingston’s Memorial Centre for the 73rd edition of the Royal Military College/West Point hockey game. Then it sat me right next to the RMC band.
In my mind’s mutated Canadian adaptation of Field of Dreams, I came, not knowing why, into the sea of red uniformed officers and sat down, in my blue winter jacket. Fights songs played and players fought, and I found myself chuckling at the idea that I was at a hockey game in which the players could, for once, be called “soldiers” without the use of hyperbole. And with that, all of the social, cultural and linguistic connections between sports, war and in this case international relations, became as clear as the dawn’s early light.
The game itself is rich in history, and its original appearance in Canada in 1924 marked the first time that West Point officers set foot on foreign soil, a trend that has not risen in the last 80 years, judging by the smattering of Army supports, whose blue dress was drowned out, in the sea of RMC red. Nevertheless, West Point has become a good hockey team, and in a true exhibition of American progress, they managed to be the first to score.

With nine skaters and one goalie, they faced squads with rosters as big as 19 players. Heart, discipline and great off-ice conditioning got the girls to this level. Basically, 10 girls we had at tryouts were what they worked with, according to coach Eric Couvreur. The team won the Little Caesars title with a 5-0 win over Ann Arbor at Joe Louis Arena. The team then won the state championship game against the USA Eagles in overtime to advance to the national tournament. The girls began with a 3-2 win over the Syracuse Stars and then skated to a 3-3 tie with the California Select Squad. Belle Tire was then beaten by Assabet Valley 3-1. The team then lost the quarterfinal contest, 3-1, to the Connecticut Polar Bears. Congratulations to the Belle Tire girls for all of their achievements this year! The members of the team are: Kelsey Burgess, Erica Couvreur, Sarah Gilbride, Kristen Griebe, Tina Hollowell, Kristine Horn, Caitlyn Juszczyk, Rachel Kelly, Chelsea Scott and Melanie Starney. Alumni Former Indian's Netminder Wins Hobey Baker Award ALBANY, N.Y .- Michigan State sophomore goaltender Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) was honored April 6, 2001, as the winner of the 2001 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to college hockey's top player. "It's a tremendous honor," said Miller. "I just wish I could have shared it with the guys but that doesn't take anything away from this. It opens a few doors. It's good for the goalies union, as all the goalies try and stick together." Miller, who backstopped the top-ranked Spartans to Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season and playoff championships and a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four, is the second goaltender to win the honor, joining Minnesota's Robb Stauber (1988) in that elite group. He's also the second MSU skater to receive the award, as cousin Kip Miller brought the Hobey back to East Lansing in 1990. Miller entered this the 2000-01 NCAA Frozen Four with a 31-4-4 record, a 1.31 goals against average, a .950 saves percentage and 10 shutouts. He led the nation in wins, goals against average, saves percentage and shutouts. In CCHA regular-season play, Miller was 20-4-3 and shattered the league marks for goals against average and saves percentage he set last year by posting a 1.24 GAA and a .950 saves this season. He also broke the conference mark for shutouts in a season by blanking eight CCHA foes during the 2000-01 campaign an eclipsed a 70-year-old NCAA record with 17th career shutout in a 3-0 win vs. Alaska- Fairbanks at Munn Ice Arena Feb. 10. The East Lansing native was the CCHA Player of the Year and the won the league's Best Goaltender award. He was also named to the all-CCHA 1st Team and was an all-CCHA Tournament selection. Miller was also recognized as the CCHA Tournament's Most Valuable Player.
