Sharks bounce back to beat Blues
SJ finally shines in 2nd period
1/3/04 - by Mike Lee
The Sharks returned to their winning ways on Saturday night with a resounding 3-1 win over the St Louis Blues at the Savvis Center. Niko Dimtrakos, Marco Sturm and Todd Harvey scored for San Jose, while backup netminder Vesa Toskala stopped 25 shots en route to his seventh win of the season. Toskala last played against St Louis back on December 18th, when the Blues beat San Jose 4-2. Evgeni Nabokov had played in seven straight games in net before Toskala turned in his winning performance on Saturday night.

SHARKS 2 St. Louis 4 FINAL
Vesa Toskala returns to the nets as Evgeni Nabokov is given the night off after playing last night in Detroit. Just over two minutes into the first period, the Blues tested Toskala with a couple shots in close, but the San Jose netminder stood his ground and turned aside the St. Louis efforts. With 16:16 left in the first period Mike Danton (slashing) and Scott Thornton (cross-checking), were sent to the box with minor penatlies opening up the ice with two minutes of four-on-four hockey. Alexander Korolyuk had a good chance with five minutes gone by, but Chris Osgood was able to get a leg pad on the turnaround shot and keep San Jsoe off the scoreboard. The Blues struck first with 12:53 left in the first when Pavol Demitra raced into the Sharks zone and blasted a low shot that Toskala was able to stop with a kick save, but the rebound came out in front to SCott Mellanby, who was able to slip the rebound into the San Jose net, giving the Blues the early 1-0 lead. Dallas Drake was called for hooking with 11:14 left in the first when he pulled down Scott Hannan deep in the Sharks zone, giving the Sharks the first power play of the evening. Midway through the power play, NIls Ekamn nearly tied the score but his blast went off the crossbar and St. louis continued to hold on to the 1-0 lead.

Gardens Ice House plays host to inspirational hockey event
    E-Mail This Article
    by Ted Black
Staff Writer Apr. 8, 2004 Gardens' Ice House co-owner Clai Carr can still recall the day his youngest son, Tyler Carr, was born 22 years ago what should have been a completely joyous occasion was soon overshadowed by concern. "Right after Tyler was born, the doctor looked at me and told me there might be a problem," Carr said. "When I looked at my newborn son, he looked normal. I didn't think anything was wrong. But the doctor said he could sense something was wrong and he wanted to do some tests. We soon found out that Tyler was born with autism."

    Osgood Takes Control
Blues' goaltending situation finally looks to be stabile...
If goalie Chris Osgood keeps playing like he did the first two games of the season then the Blues can count on a deep run into the playoffs. Osgood gave up two goals in the season openers against the Phoenix Coyotes and took the loss in overtime. He stuffed Ladislav Nagy on three breakaways to keep the Blues close in the game. Osgood ended up making 19 saves to earn the point for the team.
Osgood was even better three days later against the highly offensively skilled Colorado Avalanche. The Avs top two lines boast former MVPs, 50-goal scorers, and 100 point scorers in Joe Sackic, Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne, Peter Forsberg, and Milan Hejduk. The Avs lit up the Chicago Blackhawks for five goals in the season opener. But Osgood would have none of that as he made 39 saves including many spectacular game saving stops to nullify any Avs scoring chances.
You could finally say that a Blues’ goalie "stole" a game for the team. Keith Tkachuk scored both goals for the Blues and he became the 74th NHL player to reach the 400 goal mark with his first tally of the game. Tkachuk has all three goals that the Blues have scored thus far this season.

Russian Prospects Great Sites St. Louis Blues Mid-Season Report STLBluesFan writes "Halfway through the 2003-2004 season and the Blues seem to be where the always are come the All-Star break, closely behind the Detroit RedWings. They are once again one of the top teams when it comes to points and once again are expected to go far in the playoffs. But this season is very different from previous seasons, they have the strong goaltending they so badly wanted and had a lot less injury problems (albeit not less enough) than in previous seasons. The Blues lost their first game of the season but have only lost 10 since then. They went on a tear with a 9 game unbeaten streak while only beating teams by one or two goals. Each aspect of the team has been strong ie. offense, defense, goaltending, and coaching. The Blues are currently going through their one down point. But the biggest down point would have to be the loss of Blues defenseman Al Macinnis, who is most likely out for the season with a detached retina. Some other major injuries the Blues have suffered include Eric Bogeniecki (severely bruised shoulder), Barret Jackman (bruised shoulder), Scott Mellanby (ribs), and Petr Cajanek (severe neck strain). Another sour note is the Blues suspension problems, Keith Tkachuk (3 games for hit) and Doug Weight (4 games for slash on Daniel Sedin). The last thing the Blues need is for them to be suspended again and go down as repeat offenders.

Penguins NHL Notebook: Hull dismayed by fans in Hockey Town Tuesday, April 23, 2002 From wire dispatches Detroit fans have earned a reputation as some of the most knowledgeable, passionate and devoted in North America, but their loyalty has its limits. And the Red Wings apparently went well beyond them by losing Games 1 and 2 of their first-round playoff series against Vancouver at Joe Louis Arena. The crowd became particularly unpleasant during Detroit's 5-2 loss in Game 2, jeering goalie Dominik Hasek and admonishing the Red Wings to "shoot the puck," a chant heard at Mellon Arena once or twice over the years. Most of the Detroit players took the fans' behavior in stride "When they told us to shoot the puck, we finally started scoring," left winger Luc Robitaille said but after the Red Wings arrived in Vancouver before their 3-1 victory in Game 3 Sunday, right winger Brett Hull offered a typically candid assessment of the situation. "That's disappointing," he said. "Those are the people you need the most and ... expect to be with you. When they turn on you it's just kind of like, 'OK, we'll stick it up theirs.' ... I guess they can pay the money so they can do whatever they want, but as a group, we're disappointed in that. ...

    Playoff Hockey
Setting: The National Hockey League, circa the printing of the game.
Game Play: Both interesting and true to the sport. Each player chooses six cards to represent his team. You need a Center, two Defensemen, a Right Wig, A Left Wing, and a Goalie. You then lay those out on the table in the starting positions for a hockey game (very nice illustrations in the rulebook, by the way). The goal is to get possession of the hockey puck, skate your team forward and shoot for a goal. Play ends when one person runs out of cards. At that time, whoever has the most points wins.
This game does use custom dice to resolve actions, but even though I personally hate games which require additional materials, I didn't mind this as much because the dice were clever. These were six-sided dice with two blank sides, a puck, a whistle and an NHL logo. Whenever you are trying to shoot, you roll dice equal to your card's SHOOT stat. Count the number of pucks and NHL logos. If the logo matches the shooter's team, it counts double. The Goalie rolls dice equal to their BLOCK stat. If you beat the goalie, you score a point. Pretty simple and very quick.
Other than that, all you really need to figure out is what to do with the cards. Each player has a hand of three cards. They must draw one and play one per turn. The cards will allow you to SKATE a player forward so they can take a shot (or if they don't have the puck, they add +1 die to the player who has it), SHOOT, PASS or STEAL. Of course there are actually a lot of variations. One card might say: "OFFENSE: SKATE wingman, PASS puck to CENTER, SHOT at +1". If you don't have a useful card in your hand, you may discard any card to SKATE or SHOOT (but only if you have the puck). One last thing: they don't include a puck counter, so they recommend you use a nickel.
