Sometimes hockey fans will do the strangest things after their team's victory or defeat. Here's a look at some of the bizarre rituals of wild and rabid hockey fans. Octopus On Ice
For nearly 50 years, hockey fans in Detroit have been throwing octopi on to the ice after a big win by the Red Wings. This started on April 15, 1952 during the Red Wings' Stanley Cup run. Two brothers, Pete and Jerry Cusimano, who owned a fish shop in Detroit threw an octopus on the ice during a game in Detroit. Each tentacle of the octopus was symbolic of a win in the playoffs. Back then, the NHL had just six teams and eight wins (two best-of-seven series) were needed to win the Stanley Cup. The largest octopus to be thrown on the ice was a 50 pounder in 1996. The creature was proundly displayed on the hood of the Zamboni while the ice at the Joe Louis Arena was being cleaned between periods. Rats on Ice
In 1996, Florida Panthers' winger, Scott Mellanby, was getting ready for a game when a large rat ran through the dressing room. Scott jabbed the rat with his hockey stick and killed it - then scored two goals in the game. After that, Florida Panthers' fans started throwing rats (plastic, not live) on the ice whenever the team scored a big goal. During the team's run to the Stanley Cup finals, the ice would be completely covered with rats every time Florida scored. Opposition goalies had to hide in the net to prevent

This page is dedicated to Former Panthers captain, Scott Mellanby. Scott, A.K.A. Mell has been with the Panthers since day one and started the Rat Craze (which puts a smile on the face of every fan when spoken about) He put his heart and soul into the team. Always working to his full potential and rallying the team together. How sad we were to see our captain go. Another original lost. For a draft pick no less.....where were management's heads then again we didn't have much of a management at the time Mell was traded lol. So our leader is now a Blue and doing well too=0) He scored 15 goals this season. His gritty style of play, with 6 goals and 7 assists has helped the Blues advance as far as they did in the playoffs.
It looked like the Blues would make it to the finals but sadly it wasn't to be The Wings clipped the Blues chance at hockey's ultimate prize. Scott will be a Blue for at least the next two years. We will miss Scotty down here but we all wish him the best of luck in his chase for the cup with the Blues. I just want to say that this site would not have been possible if not for my friends chris and sruly they have spent many hours helping me out with this site, never complaining which i greatly appreciate=0) Thank you so much guys!! (all that help is because im a total idiot with computers lol...its like speaking another language....wonder if i'll ever get it right=0)
So have fun looking at all this stuff. im gonna try to update it as often as i can and if you have any comments or whatever you can always email me

HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA Canadian Sports Program Hockey Night in Canada is one of sports broadcasting's longest-running and most groundbreaking programs. The contractual foundation for the series was established on an Ontario golf course in 1929 with a handshake between Toronto Maple Leafs boss Conn Smythe and advertising agency owner Jack MacLaren. The agreement granted MacLaren and his General Motors client the radio rights to Leafs games once Maple Leaf Gardens had been built. The inaugural General Motors Hockey Broadcast subsequently aired on 12 November 1931, soon after the Gardens was completed, with Foster Hewitt calling a Leafs/Chicago Black Hawks match-up. That same night, a Montreal contest between the Canadiens and the New York Rangers was also transmitted. By the start of 1933, a 20-station hook-up relayed broadcasts in English from both Toronto and Montreal. A telephone survey estimated the combined per-game audience at just under a million in a country of less than ten million people; many of whom did not even own radio sets. A coast-to-coast ad hoc network for the program was in place by the end of the 1933-34 season. In 1936-37, Imperial Oil (another MacLaren client) replaced General Motors when GM of Canada's new president, freshly transferred from the United States, declared that he "did not believe hockey would sell cars." Meanwhile, on 1 January 1937, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was launched as a public network and assumed national carriage of the program. Sometime thereafter, the series began to be identified as

It wasn't the controlled game the Sharks have become accustomed to this season, but their 4-3 victory over the St Louis Blues in Game 4 of their Western Conference match up got the job done. As a result, the Blues are on the verge of elimination in the 1st round as the Sharks continue to find ways to win. Steady goaltending and scoring from a different part of the lineup continues to carry San Jose, this time courtesy of goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, and forwards Alexander Korolyuk and Scott Thornton.
