Main March 05, 2003 So long "Buster" October 26th, 1995, about 8 months before the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup, they traded Owen Nolan to the San Jose Sharks for defenseman, Sandis Ozolinsh. Initially shocked, Sharks fans soon made Nolan a favorite, admiring his gritty play and hard-nosed mentality. Well that era ended today, in what probably will signal a shift in the San Jose franchise's immediate strategy. Dealing "Buster" to Toronto for Alyn McAuley, minor league prospect Brad Boyes and a 1st round draft pick, the Sharks appeared to elminiate a high-priced veteran in favor of cheaper talent. The NHL trade deadline is March 11th. I for one, will miss Nolan. He was always fun to watch. I'm anxious to see what other moves the Sharks make before the deadline. I don't think they're done tweaking their team. Althought, the word around the league is that Nolan wasn't the most pleasant teammate in the locker room. Irregardless of that, the Sharks improved just about every year that Owen was part of the team. He seemed to be able to provide the spark sometimes when the team needed it. This year was different. Who knows why, but the Sharks played flat 9 nights out of 10. It should prove interesting to see how the franchise handles this level of adversity: going from Pacific Division Champs in the 2001-2002 season to, as of tonight, dead last in the division and for all intents and purposes, eliminated from playoff contention.
