Mario Lemieux
Mario " The Magnificent " Lemieux was born on September 5, 1965, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. From an early age, Mario dominated the game of hockey at every level he played. Mario played for Canada in the 1983 World Junior Championships and recorded 10 points on the bronze medal winning team. In his final year in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), Lemieux scored a record 133 goals and added 149 assists for 282 points in 70 games for the Laval Titan. He was named Canadian Junior Hockey Player of the year and was selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1984 NHL entry draft. On his first NHL shift against the Boston Bruins, Lemieux would steal the puck from Bruin great Ray Bourque and score his first NHL goal on Pete Peeters. Mario went on to chalk up 100 points in his rookie campaign and was awarded the Calder Trophy as best first year player. Lemieux recorded 100+ point season the next couple of seasons and emerged as a dominating NHL player
In January of 1993 Mario Lemieux's health problems took a turn for the worse as he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, a treatable form of cancer. Lemieux missed 23 games as he got radiation treatment, but still managed to comeback and win the scoring title. Lemieux would take the entire 1994-95 season off to recover from his back injuries and other ailments, but would come back to win two Art Ross and a Hart Trophy before announcing his retirement in 1997. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived its waiting period and inducted Lemieux in November, 1997. Having been in retirement for three years, Mario made a surprise comeback with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2000-01 season. His production numbers were nothing but awesome in a league that had become notorious for cluthing, grabbing and defensive play. His health was still a problem as he only played 24 games in 2001-02 but followed that up with a 67 game performce the following year, tallying up 91 points.

Columnists Madden: Refs play key role in Mario's future Saturday, January 06, 2001 Mario Lemieux's renewed love for hockey is so obvious that it's easy to forget how much he hated the game when he retired in 1997. The NHL had better not forget. Not if it wants Lemieux to play beyond this season. Mario's contempt for NHL-style hockey was very evident back in '97. He loathed the clutching and grabbing, the trapping and hooking. He hated that grit (i.e., lack of talent) got more leeway than skill and, seemingly, more respect as well. He was livid that hockey's superstars couldn't display their brilliance on a nightly basis. The refereeing was horrendous. The sport was tailored for the Brian Skrudlands of the world, for the lunch-pail guys, not for the elite. Not for the Mario Lemieuxs. So Lemieux quit.

Tuesday, December 12, 2000 Lemieux, Penguins announce his comeback ESPN.com news services PITTSBURGH The No. 66 jersey is hanging in Mario Lemieux 's stall, his skates are sharpened and ready. The only thing missing from the most anticipated comeback in sports since Michael Jordan's is ... Lemieux himself. ESPN's Darren Pang says there are two reasons why Mario Lemieux wants to come back and notes that he skated with Lemieux in October and found his skills to be in peak condition.
  • Barry Melrose's take
  • Brian Engblom's take Lemieux, whose unexpected comeback sent a shock wave across hockey that stretched from Miami to Minnesota, isn't in good enough shape yet to resume practicing, Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Craig Patrick said Friday. The Penguins also aren't guessing when Lemieux will play again, although Dec. 27 against Toronto seems to be a target date.

Career Statistics Other Resources Just when everyone thought no one would ever surpass Wayne Gretzky as a hockey player, Mario Lemieux came along. Lemieux didn't surpass Gretzky but he came close and in the process he proved himself to be a remarkably courageous player. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Lemieux averaged more than 4 points a game in his final season of junior hockey before joining the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins in 1984. He scored an even 100 points in his first season to win the Calder Trophy as the league's outstanding rookie. After scoring 141 and 107 points in his next two seasons, Lemieux won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's scoring leader two seasons in a row. He had 70 goals and 98 assists for 168 points in 1987-88, 85 goals and 114 assists for 199 points in 1988-89. Lemieux also won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the player of the year in 1987-88. Lemieux missed the last 21 games of the 1989-90 season because of a herniated disc, but he still had 123 points. There was doubt about whether he would ever play again after undergoing an operation for the disc problem. He missed the first 50 games of the 1990-91 season, but Lemieux came back to score 45 points in 26 regular season games and 44 points in 23 playoff games, leading Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs.

Dec. 29, 1939- Corporation executive; entrepreneur. "I enjoy building something good and having a successful product and making money," the entrepreneur H. Wayne Huizenga has said. The hero of a real-life Horatio Alger story, in his early twenties Huizenga worked as a garbage-truck driver. Striking out on his own, he started a one-man trash-collection operation that, within a decade, had grown into a highly profitable enterprise providing employment for several dozen people. In 1968, combining his business with three other companies, he created Waste Management, Inc., which, when he resigned as president and chief operating officer in 1984, having decided to retire, ranked as the largest trash haulage and disposal business in the world. Bored with inactivity, he began buying properties in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, his adopted hometown, and soon became a major player in the city's economy.
