Lalonde Family History: Hockey Superstar
by Eric Lalonde ( ericllnd@sympatico.ca The Lalonde family can truly boast of producing one of the greatest players ever to play the game. Edouard Charles (Newsy) Lalonde was the dominant player during the first 25 years of hockey according to no less an authority than the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The Beginning
Newsy was born in Cornwall, Ont. October 31, 1887 and as a youth worked in the newsprint plant. That's where he acquired the nickname Newsy. He began his professional career with the Cornwall Rovers in 1905 when he was only 16. In 1906 he became a member of the senior Woodstock club and in 1908 moved to the Toronto Arenas of Canada's first all-professional league the Ontario Professional Hockey League. That year he won the scoring championship with 29 goals in 9 games and played against the Montreal Wanderers for the Stanley Cup. Toronto lost 6-4.
Lalonde Plays In First Ever Canadiens Game
After two seasons with Toronto he moved to the Montreal Canadiens. The Montreal Canadiens played their first game ever on Wednesday January 5th,1910 at the Jubilee Rink a 3,500 seat natural ice arena that was located in Montreal's East End at the corner of Ste-Catherine and Moreau St. Newsy Lalonde was in the lineup for the Canadiens for that game and scored two goals before being hit in the ankle with a puck and leaving the game. Montreal won the game 7-6 in overtime over the Cobalt Silver Kings. As the Canadiens owner J. Ambrose O'Brien owned four of the five teams in the National Hockey Association he decided to lend Newsy Lalonde to the Renfrew team for the balance of the season where he scored 38 goals bringing his total for the year to 40. In 1911 Lalonde returned to the Canadiens but his goal production dropped to 19 in 16 games.

HOCKEY HUM UR
The following are condensed excerpts from Bob Duff's "The Odd and the Unusual" in the bestseller Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League (Andrews McMeel Publishing).
Los Angeles Kings forward Luc Robitaille was drilled into the net during a scramble in a Vancouver Canucks-Kings game. Instinctively, he quickly turned and drilled the first player he saw with a cross- check. Unfortunately, it was teammate Dave Taylor. As Taylor groggily rose to his feet, seeking revenge, Robitaille, in a state of panic, pointed to nearby Vancouver defenceman Doug Lidster. "It was him," Robitaille told Taylor, who immediately lunged at Lidster. Robitaille waited nearly two years before revealing what had really happened.
Giving the red light a workout was never a concern while Hardy Astrom was in goal for Don Cherry's Colorado Rockies in 1979-80. "First practice in Colorado, we were working on breakout drills. I shoot the puck at Hardy from the far blue line, and it goes right through his legs. 'Fluke,' I figure, so I shoot another one. Right through his legs again. 'Next drill,' I said. Actually, Hardy was a nice guy, he just had a weakness with pucks."
Overheard: Female Heckler to Ref: "If you were my husband, you gray-haired bum, I'd give you poison." Ref (Loudly): "Lady, if I was your husband, I'd take it."

Career Statistics for Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde
by Eric Lalonde ( ericllnd@sympatico.ca Newsy Lalonde's career records come from the 1998 edition of Total Hockey the Official Encyclopedia of the NHL. The new edition contains a much more comprehensive set of statistics of Newsy Lalonde's career. The coaching career as documented in Total Hockey shows Newsy as the coach of the Canadiens from 1918 to 1922. During this period he was also a player. George Kennedy is listed in most hockey books as the Canadiens coach. However in reality, Newsy was the one running the team on the ice and George Kennedy ran the business of the team. Total Hockey now reflects the true situation and Newsy gets proper credit for the role he played.

Nicknamed "Newsy" because he worked as a linotype operator as a youth, Lalonde didn't begin skating until he was thirteen. An outstanding lacrosse player, he took up hockey at sixteen with his hometown team and in 1911 went to Vancouver, where he was paid $6,500, by far the highest hockey salary of the time. In 1912, he scored 60 goals in just 12 games. Lalonde joined the Montreal Canadiens when they were organized in 1913. They played in the National Hockey Association at the time and moved into the National Hockey League when it was organized in 1917. Lalonde was fourth in scoring in the league's first season with 23 goals. He led in 1918-19 with 32 points on 23 goals and 9 assists and in 1920-21 with 41 points on 33 goals and 8 assists. He retired from playing after that season, returned for two seasons with the New York Americans in 1925, then retired for good. Lalonde coached the Canadiens from 1932 into the 1934-35 season.

History of Hockey
During the NHL’s first season a major rule was changed. Before the beginning of the 1917-18 season, goalies were not allowed to fall down on the ice to make a save and if they did they were finned $2. The NHL decided to change the rule allowing goalies to assume any position to make a save. Even though the rule change benefited the goalies the offense remained supreme. Georges Vezina led all goalies with the lowest goals against average at 4.0, which is not good compared to today's goalies who have an average of 2.5 goals per game.

Introduction
The Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association folded after the 1908-09 season. Most of the better teams formed into two rival leagues, the National Hockey Association and the Canadian Hockey Association. By the end of the 1909-10 season, however, only the National Association was left standing after absorbing the two best teams in the CHA. That first year of the NHA the teams included the Ottawa Senators (the lineal descendents of the storied Ottawa Silver Seven), the Montreal Wanderers, the Renfrew Creamery Kings, the Montreal Shamrocks, the Cobalt Silver Kings, the Montreal Canadiens and the Haileybury Hockey Club. If that seems like a lot of teams in Montreal, consider that two of the CHA teams that did not make the jump to the NHA were yet other Montreal teams, the Nationals and All-Montreal! That first year of the NHA Ambrose O'Brien controlled four of the franchises, the Renfrew, Cobalt, Haileybury and Montreal Canadian teams. The positions in hockey at that time were somewhat different than today. Today a team lines up as:

In serious need of a good editor This book starts so nicely! Earthquake in LA, terrorists, nuclear war ..... But then the problems begin. Point of view that shifts between characters with no transition. Pages of exposition that cover crises and changes and riots and chaos - and then the author goes back to the main characters and you find out that all this chaos happened in one day. Unfortunately, the events chronicled in this book aren't believable as the events of just a week (ex: within 48 hours of the Rapture, the homes of every missing person in the world has been bugged). As another reviewer has said, the events are rushed and the timeline much too compressed for believability (I have the same gripe with the Left Behind series). With a good editor to fix the technical writing problems, the series would have much more potential. As it is, the writing is mediocre at best. I won't read the rest of the series.
