This time, he helped the New York Islanders break the drought that had lasted nearly eight years. Mariusz Czerkawski and Oleg Kvasha each had a goal and an assist and Yashin scored a power-play goal with four minutes remaining in the third period to lead the Islanders to a 6-3 victory over the Senators. Entering with a three-game road winning streak, the Senators were on their way to extending their 15-game unbeaten run at Long Island when Peter Schaefer scored less than eight minutes into the game. But the Islanders scored late in the first period and early in the second to take the lead for good. The teams split the next four goals as New York carried a 4-3 lead into the final 20 minutes. And when Marian Hossa took Ottawa's second penalty of the period, Yashin cashed in to give the Islanders their first home win over the Senators since January 6, 1996.

Czerkawski scored his third goal of the season and assisted on Oleg Kvasha's power-play game-winner last night as the Islanders beat the Florida Panthers, 2-1, before a sellout crowd of 16,234 at the Coliseum in their home opener. "It's nice that the fans appreciate me and remember me," Czerkawski said of his five-year tenure on Long Island. He was traded to Montreal last season for Arron Asham, then was signed over the summer as a free agent. Playing on a line with Kvasha and center Alexei Yashin seems to have had a positive effect. "Oly has quickness and size, and Yash is strong and is a great playmaker," Czerkawski said. "I just try to fit in somewhere in between." Kvasha capitalized at 4:10 of the final period on the Islanders' fifth power-play attempt when he was fed a perfect cross-ice pass from Adrian Aucoin, and tapped the puck past Roberto Luongo (44 saves). "The score was 2-1, but let's be honest," Florida coach Mike Keenan said. "If it wasn't for Roberto, it would have been a bigger margin of victory for them." The teams traded goals in the second period, with Viktor Kozlov scoring on a backhand for the Panthers and Czerkawski roofing a rebound to tie it.

ADVERTISEMENT Cliff Ronning scored twice in his fourth game with the Islanders, and Jason Blake added a goal to give New York just its second home win against Ottawa in 19 games. The 38-year-old Ronning, signed 10 days earlier as a free agent, notched his 300th goal to make it 5-2 with 6:09 left. He has three goals this season, his 16th. New York built a 2-0 lead it carried into the third period, but Ottawa got even when Bryan Smolinski and Daniel Alfredsson scored 1:08 apart.
