Northeastern Sports Information Director Bill Doherty is college hockey's founding father of player nicknames. His top two from last year were the priceless Mike (Bud) Veisor and Dan (Hobey Dobey) McGillis. Here is USCHO's list of Hockey East nicknames, some original and some that have floated around Hockey East in recent years. Regretfully, Marc (Nachos) Grande was pulled from this list because he was a late roster scratch from Doherty's own Huskies.

    Peter Metcalf
February 23, 2002 MAINE BLANKS UMASS AMHERST 7-0
ORONO, Maine Peter Metcalf (Pembroke, Mass.) scored a goal and added two assists to lead the University of Maine ice hockey team to a 7-0 victory over UMass Amherst Saturday night at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Maine, who scored seven goals for the second straight night, improves to 19-9-6, 13-5-4 in Hockey East action while UMass Amherst falls to 8-22-2, 3-17-2 in conference play.
Francis Nault (Tracy, Quebec) opened the scoring for Maine at 10:31 when Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) made a pass to Lucas Lawson (Braeside, Ontario) who found Nault. Lawson made it 2-0 with his 11th goal of the season from Niko Dimitrakos (Someville, Mass.) and Kariya at 17:14. For Lawson, it is his fourth straight game with a goal. Gray Shaneberger (Sewell, N.J.) added to the Maine lead when he knocked in a rebound off a Robert Liscak (Skalica, Slovakia) shot at 9:01 of the second period.
The UMaine freshman class continued to look impressive as Ben Murphy (North Andover, Mass.) scored his fifth goal of the season at 11:32 from Paul Falco (Weymouth, Mass.) and Metcalf. Falco netted his second goal of the campaign halfway through the third period when he knocked the puck away from a UMass defender and rifled a shot past Minutemen netminder Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) at 9:34. Metcalf gave the Black Bears a 6-0 lead at 11:51 with his seventh goal of the season from Liscak and Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.).

October 30, 2003 Jackson, Moore Lead Maine Past Merrimack, 6-2
ORONO, MAINE. - The Black Bear men's hockey team opened Hockey East play with a 6-2 win over Merrimack on Thursday night at Alfond Arena. Maine had two goals each by Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.) and Greg Moore (Lisbon, Maine), and Merrimack was led by Marco Rosa (Whitby, Ontario) with two goals. Maine improves to 6-0-0 on the season, 1-0-0 in Hockey East and Merrimack is 2-3-1, 1-2-1 in Hockey East. Maine's 6-0-0 start is the best start in school history. Maine is currently ranked first in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine and USCHO polls.
"We were excited to get into Hockey East play," said Maine head coach Tim Whitehead. "Merrimack was playing well with a hot goalie. We got out to an early lead, and scored some real timely goals. Greg Moore scoring to break the tie in the first period, and then Todd Jackson on the short-handed goal when Merrimack was applying a lot of pressure on the power play. Colin Shields' goal scored on the face-off, which came right after Merrimack killed the 5-on-3 advantage was also a good, timely goal."
Maine scored the first goal of the night when John Ronan scored at 4:30 in the first period with an assist by Mike Hamilton (Victoria, British Columbia) and Mike Lundin (Apple Valley, Minn.). Merrimack tied the game five minutes later tat the 9:13 mark when Rosa scored on an assist by Matt Johnson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Bryan Schmidt (Bloomington, Minn.). Moore scored his first goal of the night with an assist by Jackson and Derek Damon (Bangor, Maine) at the 13:48 mark to give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead. Jackson closed out the first period with a short-handed goal at 19:21 on an assist from Damon and Prestin Ryan (Arcola, Saskatchewan). It was his fourth short-handed goal this season, which leads the nation.

Icedogs Sweep Aside Minutemen In Hockey East Battle
    BU 3, UMass 2

By Nick Cardamone Published: Monday, December 10, 2001 Media Credit: Sarai Nunez - DFP STAFF BU senior co-captain Chris Dyment fights a UMass forward for control of the puck in Friday night’s 5-2 Icedog win at the Mullins Center in Amherst.
It probably should not have been this difficult.
The Boston University hockey team defeated the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena, completing a weekend sweep of the Minutemen after capturing the first matchup on Friday night, 5-2, at the Mullins Center in Amherst.
The Icedogs (10-3-1, 5-2-1 Hockey East) dug themselves into an early hole on Sunday, allowing two goals on the first four Minutemen (6-10-1, 2-7-0 Hockey East) shots, and generally looking like they were continuing to play like they had in the last 10 minutes of Friday's game.
"Coach [Jack Parker] kind of laid into us the other night about sloppy play, and we wanted to come out and play hard, and the first half of the game we came out real dead," said BU forward Jack Baker.

The Bowling Green State University hockey squad concluded its 1996-97 campaign last Friday (March 14) with a 7-2 setback to the University of Michigan, the nation's top-ranked team, in semifinal action of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich. The Falcons played the Wolverines to a scoreless first period before UM grabbed a 2-0 lead 8:49 into the middle frame. Mike Johnson cut BG's deficit in half 1:55 later with the Falcons on the power play. Kelly Perrault and Curtis Fry helped set up Johnson's team-leading 31st goal of the year. However, the Wolverines built their advantage back up to two goals with just 1:29 left in the period. UM broke the game wide open in the final stanza with four unanswered tallies, all by the 13:29 mark, before Fry concluded the game's scoring with a power-play marker of his own with 1:25 to play. Perrault and Adam Edinger both drew assists on Fry's 21st goal of the season. Fry's tally was BG's only shot on goal of the period. The Falcon defense limited UM to 26 SOG for the game, including five in the first period. BG netminder Bob Petrie made 19 saves in his final collegiate game. Both teams were 2-of-6 on the power play. The Brown and Orange concludes the season at 17-16-5, the program's fourth straight winning season.
