Sheryl Johnson To Retire As Stanford Field Hockey Coach At End of 2002 Season
Current Assistant Coach Lesley Irvine Named As Successor STANFORD, CA (August 19, 2002) - Sheryl Johnson has announced that she will retire as the field hockey coach at Stanford in December of 2002 following the conclusion of her 18th season. Current assistant coach Lesley Irvine has been named the successor. "It's been an honor and privilege to coach the student-athletes at Stanford for the last 18 years," said Johnson. "Winning championships has always been our goal, but this special program is also about the development of the entire student-athlete, as well as building friendships and memories to last a lifetime. I'm proud of our 100% graduation rate, and I cherish the opportunity I've had to coach the close to 400 athletes who have passed through this program during my tenure. The team, Lesley (Irvine) and I plan to make my final season as head coach one to remember." "We are extremely proud of the Field Hockey Program that Sheryl has built here at Stanford," continued Stanford athletic director Ted Leland. "Her hard work and dedication to the sport has left an indelible mark on our Athletic Department. Throughout the years, she has developed exemplary students, skilled athletes and model citizens." Johnson has led Stanford to nine NorPac Conference Championships and seven appearances in the NCAA playoffs during her first 17 seasons as coach. An eight-time recipient of the NorPac Coach of the Year Award (1985, '87, '90, '91, '95, '96, '97, '98), Johnson has a 158-114-11 career record.

AMHERST, MA - Northeastern tied UMass-Amherst Saturday night in Amherst 2-2. The Huskies led 2-1 at the end of the second period. But UMass dominated the third period, outshooting NU 12-4. The Minutemen were frustrated for much of the period, by the outstanding play of Mike Gilhooly (35 saves) and by the post, which they hit three times in the final period. But UMass finally got the equalizer at 12:25 when Jay Shaw got the luck in front off the boards and scored the goal. In overtime, UMass held a five to four advantage in shots, but Northeastern had the best scoring chance. Graig Mischler got the puck in front and put a shot on goa. But UMass goalie Mike Johnson (33 saves) made a spectaculr glove save, robbing the senior. UMass-Amherst got on the board in the first period on a fluke-type goal. UMA's Brad Nizwantowski had the puck along the left boards in the NU zone. His centering pass deflected off NU defenseman Arik Engbrecht's skate and through the legs of Husky goalie Mike Gilhooly at 5:25 of the first. The Huskies scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. With the teams skating four players aside, UMass iced the puck. Sean MacDonald won the ensuing faceoff to the right of UMass goalie Mike Johnson. Mike Jozefowicz controlled the puck, sending it back to MacDonald along the boards. MacDonald then cross the puck to Joe Mastronardi whose one-timer beat Johnson at 4:56. A trio of Husky seniors got together for NU's next goal. Brian Cummings got the puck to Matt Keating behind the UMass net. Keating spotted Kevin Welch streaking to the net and Welch sent home the one-timer at 13:20.

Northeastern couldn’t overcome a 4-0 third-period deficit, losing a 4-1 decision in Hockey East action before 2752 fans at Lawler Arena Friday night. The Huskies fall to 8-15-6 overall and 2-12-5 in Hockey East play. The Warriors increase their unbeaten streak to three games, while improving to 11-16-4 and 6-12-4. "Obviously it’s a very disappointing loss," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "We have fought back from a bad start to the season to get us into position to control our own destiny and we couldn’t get the job done." With the Huskies trailing 4-0 in the third period, sophomore Mike Morris netted his eighth goal of the season on a nifty backhander with a man-advantage at 5:48. Morris took a pass from Eric Ortlip along the right boards, skated around a defender and across the crease. MC netminder Jim Healy (31 Saves) went down as Morris was at the left post and the right-winger lobbed a backhand shot over Healy. After two periods of play, NU goalie Keni Gibson (16 saves) was replaced by sophomore Tim Heneroty, which ended Gibson’s run of 24 straight games in net. Freshman Adam Geragosian was the last netminder to see time between the pipes other than Gibson Nov. 1, 2003 in a 5-2 loss to UMass Lowell. Heneroty played flawlessly over the final 20 minutes, making nine saves.

RIT outshot the Wildcats 38-21 on the evening, but the Tigers used their top lines sparingly in the third period and used a number of different power-play units on their five third-period chances. Tucciarone finished with a pair of goals and two helpers, Roberto Orofiamma added a third period goal and had three assists, while Fayad, Bagley, Doherty and Mike Tarantino all multiple-point efforts with a goal and assist apiece. Matt Moore posted the other RIT goal. Tyler Euverman went the distance for the Tigers recording 20 saves improving to 5-0-0 on the year. The Tigers will close out their New England road trip against Wentworth on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 3:15 p.m. Wentworth defeated fellow ECAC West member Utica 5-1 Saturday night. One loss on the night for RIT was Jared Conlon who was issued a five-minute major for fighting at 2:40 of the second period and a game-disqualification which will force him to sit out Sunday's contest.
