NHL veteran Rob Ray leaves the minor leagues with a newfound respect, following his recent AHL conditioning stint. By Dan Hickling
MinorLeagueNews.com
03.30.04 Binghamton, N.Y. Rob Ray wasn't looking for a fight. Nevertheless when you're, the proud owner of 3,189 NHL penalty minutes, trouble comes looking for you. It didn't matter that Ray was just taking a brief tune-up run through the AHL with the Binghamton Senators, working his way up to Ottawa. All he wanted was to get his legs and lungs into game shape after nearly a full year in retirement. His knuckles, as always, were already in prime condition. However the "H" in AHL might just as well stand for "hopeful", and Ray, who last saw the inside of a minor league rink back in 1990, was going to have to put up with young bucks trying to make a name for themselves against an old one. Any pretense to the contrary lasted all of one shift; the time it took for Syracuse Crunch enforcer Brandon Sugden to skate his way.

Jewish hockey players are quite plentiful
BY HARVEY ROSEN

Special to The CJN Finding Jewish pro and semi-pro hockey players is sometimes a challenge; at other times, it's a piece of honey cake.
In the case of San Jose right-winger Ronnie Stern, 32, you don't exactly have to be a detective to search for clues as to his whereabouts. He can usually be found in any of the 28 National Hockey League penalty boxes from Florida to California.
Behaving like a shark in the team's second game of the season, the Ste. Agathe, Que., native started slowly with an interference penalty in the first period. In the second, he received a double roughing penalty, a high-sticking infraction and a fighting major. So, what did you expect? A hat trick?
The 6-foot, 195-pound Stern only scored a total of seven goals and nine assists last year, but that's not what the pugnacious skater, who missed the entire 1997-98 season with a knee injury, was hired for. A team-leading 158 minutes in penalties underscores his job description.
Next month, Stern will reach the 600 game mark in the NHL and one can only wonder how much tread remains on his tires.

Jewish skaters reach for the hockey heights By HARVEY ROSEN

Special to The CJN WINNIPEG - As a wise poet once stated, "A man's reach should exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for."
Well, in terms of those who would aspire to loftier goals, there are now several Jewish hockey players labouring diligently in the minor leagues whose prime goal in life is to perform under the big tops of Los Angeles and New York, instead of in outposts like Peoria or Dayton.
Thus far only a handful of Jewish skaters have managed to succeed and obtain a seat on the NHL gravy train. The rest of the crowd is still jostling to mount the station platform.
Thirty-two-year-old Mathieu Schneider is a King these days, not only because he plays defence in the National Hockey League with Los Angeles, but also because he earns a monarch's ransom of $2 million per season to patrol the blue line and quarterback the power play.
The 2000-01 season he enjoyed in California was his best in seven years. Following a miserable two-year stint with the New York Rangers, the 14-year veteran who stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 192 pounds. scored 16 goals and added 35 assists. Very impressive numbers for a rearguard.
Schneider, is personable, articulate and friendly, and he identified proudly with being a member of the Jewish faith.

ECHL Centerman Recognized for Outstanding Community Service
(St. Catharines, ON) - US Airways and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA) announced today that Syl Apps of the ECHL Trenton Titans has been named the 2003 PHPA US Airways Player of the Year Award recipient. The honor is presented annually to one PHPA Member that exemplifies outstanding charitable efforts in his playing community throughout the hockey season.
While Apps, a Princeton University graduate and fittingly the Captain of the Titans, had an impressive season on the ice, it was his off-ice efforts that led to his selection. The Unionville, Ontario native took the initiative to create a charitable foundation, known as The Character Project (www.thecharacterproject.org). This not-for-profit endeavor, based in Trenton, New Jersey, provides numerous adolescents from low-income families with access to quality academic and athletic programs.
Read Across America Day and donated tickets on a regular basis to Titans games and other high profile sporting events.

College Hockey Report, 1995 October 16
On April 1st, BU defeated Maine for the national title. Since then, we've waited, we've bided our time, it's been a long six and a half months, but at long last the time is upon us....it's College Hockey season again. And this weeked Southern California got its annual dose of the college game with the seventh annual Great Western Freeze-Out. The first semifinal, at the Forum in LA, pitted defending champion Maine against the CCHA's Miami University of Ohio. It looked early on like the Black Bears, last year's NCAA runnerup, would dominate, as Maine's Tony Frenette scored just 13 seconds into the contest. But the Redskins wouldn't go down that easy, coming back from 3-1 and 5-2 deficits to close the margin to a single goal. But in the end the Hockey East powerhouse staved them off, as Scott Parmentier scored his second goal short-handed with three minutes remaining in the third to put Maine up 6-4. Miami scored late, but in the end they were one break short of the upset, falling 6-5. The other semi pitted Hockey East doormat Boston College and Michigan State of the CCHA. The Eagles spent much of the first period on the offensive, outshooting the Spartans 12-8, but came away with nothing, as Michigan State led 2-0 at the intermission. Anson Carter made that 3-0 on a short-handed breakaway in the second, but BC came back with Tom Ashe's shorthander, and David Hymovitz scored on the power play to bring the Eagles to within 3-2 in the third. Late in the game, though, the Spartans put it away with two goals in two minutes: Chris Bogas assisted on Richard Keyes's second score and then lit the lamp to ice the Spartans' 5-2 victory.

IceCats Earn Point with Tie and Secure Playoff Spot
WORCESTER, MA – The American Hockey League’s (AHL) first place Worcester IceCats secured a spot in the 2001 Calder Cup playoffs last night at Worcester’s Centrum Centre as they skated to a 4-4 tie with the Lowell Lock Monsters. The ‘Cats now lead the League with 84 points.
Worcester came back from a 1-0 deficit in the second period, scoring three goals in a 1:06 span. They held a 4-2 lead going into the third after Lowell’s Stu Bodtker put the Lock Monsters on top just 1:24 after the opening face-off.
Mark Rycroft's whirlwind shift tied the game at one at the 4:54 mark of the second. He then picked up his 19th of the season and his second power play goal of the game just 22 seconds later. Consequently, Rycroft now leads all rookies in the AHL’s power play goals category with 10. His speedy back-to-back markers established a new IceCats record for fastest two goals by the same player.
Mike Peluso scored the IceCats third straight power play goal 1:06 after Rycroft began Worcester’s scoring surge. The man advantage was the result of a five-minute high sticking major that knocked Eric Boguniecki out of the game. The Lock Monsters regrouped and scored, but Peluso would find the net again at 18:13 of that period.
Stefan Rivard brought the Lock Monsters within one 20 seconds into the third and David Hymovitz forced the game to overtime when he scored Lowell’s fourth goal with 8:38 remaining in regulation.

By Brian Wachsman
Business Manager What a difference a week makes. Just seven days ago the Binghamton Senators were a season-high twelve games over .500, were riding a 10-game unbeaten streak, and had a comfortable five-point lead over the second-place Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Since then, the B-Sens have dropped two straight - a 2-1 heartbreaker in Worchester and a 4-0 loss Wednesday night against the fourth-place Springfield Falcons -and have watched their Eastern Division lead shrink to three points. "We were on a pretty good roll," said Binghamton forward Dennis Bonvie. "But good teams respond. We had a sloppy one before the [All-Star] break and a sloppy one now. We're not going to make excuses. We have a couple of days to regroup here and play the way we've been playing; we haven't been doing that too much and this is what happens." The two losses were the first back-to-back defeats for Binghamton since January 8th and January 10th, but the Senators came close in Worchester.
