Career Statistics He is, simply, the "Great One," a player of unsurpassed skills who dominated hockey as no other single player has ever dominated a team sport. Gretzky began playing professionally when he was only sixteen. After two minor-league seasons, he joined the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association in 1978 but was traded to the Edmonton Oilers after only 8 games. He scored 46 goals and had 64 assists and was named the league's rookie of the year. The WHA folded and Edmonton moved in the NHL the following season, when Gretzky began putting up really big numbers: 137 points in 1979/80, 164 in 1980/81, 212 in 1981/82, 196 in 1982/83, 205 in 1983/84, 208 in 1984/85, 215 in 1985/86, 183 in 1986/87, leading the league each time. A knee injury cut into his playing time in 1987/88 and he scored "only" 149 points, falling short of a 9th consecutive scoring title. Gretzky then announced that he no longer wanted to play for Edmonton and was sent to the Los Angeles Kings in a mammoth trade involving four other players, three first-round draft choices, and cash. Gretzky led the NHL in scoring again with 142 points in 1989/90 and 163 in 1990/91. After slipping to 121 points in 1991/92, he underwent an operation for a herniated disc and missed the first 39 games of the 1992/93 season, when he scored 65 points in just 45 games.

Gretzky, only 16, carries a 'Gold-Orr' label by Frank Orr
For The Sporting News January 27, 1978 The name is Gretzky, Wayne G-R-E-T-Z-K-Y. All hockey fans should make a note of it because they're going to hear the name often in the next few years. Unless, of course, most knowledgeable hockey scouts are wrong. In that case, many strong men will weep. Wayne Gretzky is only 16 years of age. Already he's attracted more superlatives than the majority of athletes earn in a lifetime of achievements. The accolade most used to describe him is: the best hockey prospect since Bobby Orr. Because Orr was the finest player of his generation-and perhaps ever- and his precocity at 14 years of age turned on a shower of adjectives before he owned a driver's license, it's inevitable that every fuzz-chinned kid who shows above-average ability automatically becomes "the best since Bobby Orr." The early December scoring statistics for the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League in which Gretzky plays as a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds supply evidence that, perhaps, just perhaps, the descriptive phrases for him aren't mere hyperbole.

Wayne Gretzky - Mario Lemieux Mike Modano
    The Greats Of Ice Hockey
Wayne Gretzky the Greatest! Maybe no one changed the way a team game, team sport has been played more then Gretzky (The Great One). Babe Ruth changed baseball forever with his mighty swings that ended up as 714 homeruns. When Ruth hit 60 homeruns in 1927, not even a whole team had hit 60 homeruns in a year. Jackie Robinson of course changed the color of the game of baseball for good. Not Wilt Chamberlain, or even Michael Jordan changed the face of their game the way Wayne Gretzky change the way Ice Hockey is played. In his first year in the NHL he won the Hart Trophy, the first time a first-year player was so honored. The next year, 1980-81, he won his first of seven straight scoring titles and broke Bobby Orr's assists record with 109. The year after, he shattered Phil Esposito's record of 76 goals (a record many thought was unbreakable) by scoring 92 times, a record that itself will surely stand the test of time. En route, he also scored an incredible 50 goals in the first 39 games of the season, including five in the historic 39th game. He also registered 212 points, the first of four times he'd score more than 200, and to this day he's the only player to have done so even once (Mario Lemieux came closest when he scored 199 in 1988-89).

    47. Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky - The Great One
Center, Shoots Left, 6'0", 185 lbs. Born - Brantford, Ontario - January 26, 1961 Wayne Gretzky earned his nickname "The Great One" for one reason. He was always the best player on the ice. In fact, he is a walking book of hockey records. Wayne Gretzky finished his astonishing career with 894 goals and 1963 assists for a grand total of 2857 regular season points. Gretzky, the NHL career leader in those three categories, actually finished with 1007 more total points than the great Gordie Howe, who ranks second on the career points list. An even more outrageous statistic is that Gretzky has more assists than any other player has points! At the time of his retirement, Gretzky owned or shared 61 National Hockey League records! Gretzky was taught how to play hockey by his father Walter in Brantford, Ontario, where Mr. Gretzky had constructed an outdoor backyard ice rink. As an 11 year old, it was clearly evident that there was something special about Wayne's hockey skills as he scored 378 goals with 139 assists during one of his first years of organized hockey, 1970-71. Gretzky made his Ontario Major Junior Hockey League debut for the Peterborough Petes in the 1976-77 season. Although Gretzky went without a goal in the three games he played that season, he connected for three assists and then exploded the following year as a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds by posting 70 goals and 112 helpers in only 63 games and while wearing his now famous number 99. During that same 1977-78 campaign, Gretzky represented Canada at the World Junior Championships and led all scorers in the tournament with 17 points, eight of those finding the back of the net, while leading his nation to a bronze medal.

    'Great' and 'Gretzky' belong together
    By Larry Schwartz

    Special to ESPN.com
He was just a kid when he gave his first interview. "The headline says, 'Hull, Richard, Howe and Gretzky,'" he recalled. "That was lots of pressure." After being traded to Los Angeles in 1988 along with two teammates for two players, three first-round picks and $15 million, Wayne Gretzky continued to live up to expectations. Has there ever been a more prophetic headline? Has any 9-year-old ever lived up to such expectations? Has any 9-year-old ever faced such expectations? Not even megastars Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan were struck by such pressure at such a young age. Few athletes have lived almost their entire lives in the spotlight. Most were at least teenagers before their athletic prowess blossomed and their privacy disappeared. But not Wayne Gretzky. By obeying his father's advice "skate to where the puck is going, not to where it has been" he was a star at a young age. At 6, he was skating with ten-year-old's. When he reached double figures in age, he was scoring in three figures, notching an incredible 378 goals in an 82-game season. That was a year or so after that headline hit the newsstands. An entire nation of Canadians turned its lonely eyes to this prodigy.

September 21 ~  The Shots You Never Take Mom's Guide to Ice Hockey
"You m i s s one h u n d re d percent of the s h o t s you never take." ~ Wayne Gretzky On this day in 1993, hockey legend Wayne Douglas Gretzky (1961-) became the highest paid player in the NHL, signing a contract with the L.A. Kings that would pay him $25,000,000 over three years. “I was always taught that an assist is as good as a goal,” he said. Born in Brantford, Ontario, at age 10 he scored 378 goals in a 69-game season. By 17, he had signed his first professional contract with the Indianapolis Racers and began a magical 20-year career that included 1,487 games, 894 goals, and 1,963 assists. He dominated the game, setting or tying over 50 NHL records. Sports Illustrated called him "a meteor that forever changed the hockey world Hockey great Gordie Howe agreed: "I'm happy that if anyone were to break my records in this game, it would be Wayne. He's such a great ambassador for hockey that he always has time for the fans and the media. He only does what's best for the game." Gretzky was once asked what was the secret of his success , since he was not the biggest, fastest, nor most agile skater. “First you have to have a
