Stanley Cup championships between 1984 and 1990. Without a doubt, his best year was in 1987. Fuhr was a workhorse, accumulating a league-leading 4,304 minutes played and 40 wins. He earned his sole Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender and was runner-up to teammate Wayne Gretzky for the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. During the 1983-1984 season, Fuhr collected 14 points, which still stands as the single-season record for most points by a goaltender. Wayne Gretzky and Grant celebrate one of their many Stanley Cup championships.

    HOME:
    HEIGHT:
    WEIGHT: 190 lbs.
UNIFORM #: Edmonton Edmonton Buffalo ). Fuhr's "31" was retired by the Oilers on October 9, 2003.
    CATCHES: Right
    JUNIOR TEAM: Victoria WHL
    SALARY (1997-98):
    STYLE: Angles.
STRENGTHS: Very calm and collected; perhaps the best goaltender, mentally, in the league.
WEAKNESSES: Vulnerable to shots at the five-hole. Stays rather deep in the net, begging the shooters to look for the corners. Constantly battling conditioning problems and nagging injuries.
    Name pronounced FYOOR.
    WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"The Sabres have a political problem here as well. They gave up Dave Andreychuk, Daren Puppa and a No. 1 draft pick to get Fuhr from Toronto in February 1993 and they need to get something in return for him. The scuttlebutt at the draft in June was that other teams were offering nothing more than draft picks - and not first-rounders - for Fuhr." (The Sporting News 1994-95 Hockey Yearbook, p. 47) "Fuhr was flying high until Toronto's Nick Kypreos flattened him in the second game of the playoffs and blew out Fuhr's right knee. Extensive reconstructive surgery followed, putting Fuhr's career, not to mention this season, at risk. But after his remarkable resurgence last season, no one is counting out another Fuhr comeback. In midsummer, he was making remarkable progress in his rehab and keeping his weight down."

Fuhr, LaFontaine, Ilitch to be inducted into Hockey Hall of Fame TORONTO ap. Grant Fuhr made his living as the last line of defense on one of hockey's great offensive powerhouses. He did it so well that he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Wednesday. The goaltender became the third player from the Edmonton Oilers' dominating teams of the 1980s to make the Hall. He won five Stanley Cups with Edmonton while the Oilers were playing a wide-open style. "It's a fabulous honor," said Fuhr. "It's the topping on which was the most enjoyable of things to do for a living. This is the ice cream on the cake." Fuhr, the first black member of the hockey hall, was joined Wednesday by forward Pat LaFontaine, Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch and junior team coach Brian Kilrea. The other Oilers of that era in the Hall of Fame are Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri.

Hall of Fame goalie Grant Fuhr looked almost tortured as he stood at center ice and watched his Edmonton Oilers No. 31 jersey lifted to the rafters Thursday night at Skyreach Centre. He was much more comfortable staring down opposing shooters than he ever was talking in public. So it was with a faint heart that he took center stage to accept the adulation of his fans for his role in bringing five Stanley Cups to Edmonton during the 1980s. The damp-eyed Fuhr had the crowd of 16,000 roaring when he took to the podium before the Oilers opened the season against San Jose. He was decked out in his goaltending gear, including the mask. "I have been part of a lot of opening nights, but none better than this," said Fuhr, who played 19 NHL seasons. Fuhr, who admitted later he had a few sleepless nights in anticipation of the event, said it is hard for him to speak in public. "I hate speaking," he said. "I made more speeches in the last two days than I will make in the rest of my life."

Grant Fuhr Grant Fuhr—Just Win, Baby Grant Fuhr is one of the best clutch goaltenders in the history of the game. However, any modern fan who looks at Fuhr's career numbers may wonder about his ability: a career 3.38 goal against average and 25 career shutouts over 19 seasons do not seem like such great goaltending numbers. Fuhr’s glory years came at the height of what some pundits called the "Air Hockey Years" of the 1980s. The Oilers’ run-and-gun style, which saw them score over 400 goals a season, created an offensive revolution in the game. In 1983-84, the Oilers’ first championship season, 13 of the NHL’s 21 teams scored more than 300 goals in the regular season. In the 21st century, none of the NHL’s 30 teams even got close to the 300-goal mark. Because of the rise of end-to-end hockey, goalies were constantly under duress. Shutouts were rare, and a goalie could be outstanding and still allow four goals in a night. The real measure of Fuhr’s importance to the Oilers comes by simply looking at his career win totals, which include 403 regular-season triumphs and an amazing 92 career playoff wins. Most of
