Opening Lightning strikes secure win
By Associated Press, 3/11/2004 Dave Andreychuk and Ruslan Fedotenko scored in the opening three minutes and Dan Boyle netted the tiebreaking goal to help the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-2 victory last night over the Carolina Hurricanes at Raleigh, N.C. ADVERTISEMENT The Hurricanes started poorly in their first game since captain Ron Francis was traded Tuesday to Toronto. No player wore the "C" on his jersey and general manager Jim Rutherford said the title probably won't be awarded for the rest of the season. Arturs Irbe made his first home start since returning from minor league exile last month and gave up goals on Tampa Bay's first two shots. The Hurricanes looked hesitant and uncoordinated as the NHL-leading Lightning jumped to a 2-0 lead. Andreychuk, parked near the right post, used the shaft of his stick to redirect a slap shot by Cory Stillman for a power-play goal just 2:15 in. Less than a minute later, the Lightning took advantage of a sloppy clearing attempt. Martin St. Louis grabbed the puck and got it to Fedotenko, who fired a shot past Irbe at 3:09. Tampa Bay assistant captain Vincent Lecavalier celebrates his goal against Montreal's Jose Theodore, background.
Tampa Bay tips Habs The Associated Press Vincent Lecavalier insisted his playoff scoring slump was no big deal. Two goals and an assist in Tampa Bay's 4-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday night in Tampa, Fla., in the opener of their Eastern Conference semifinal series didn't change the young star's perspective. "It feels good, especially to get the first win. But it's one game. There's still three left," said Lecavalier, the No. 1 overall pick in 1998. "I'm happy tonight. The puck went in, but we've got to keep on going." Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Sunday. "You've got to give credit where credit is due," Canadiens coach Claude Julien said. "They played a great game. As bad as we played, and as well as they did, you have to respect that. It was one of those things where Lecavalier had some success. We expected this series was not going to be an easy one." Lecavalier, a native of Montreal who grew up idolizing the Canadiens, didn't have a goal in 12 playoff games, dating to Game 4 of Tampa Bay's first-round victory over Washington last year. He hadn't had an assist in seven games, but fended off questions about the drought by saying he was happy as long as the Lightning was winning.

Flyers send Fedotenko to Tampa for fourth pick in draft
PHILADELPHIA (June 22, 2002) - The Philadelphia Flyers acquired the No. 4 overall pick in the NHL draft from the Tampa Bay Lightning for forward Ruslan Fedotenko and two picks Friday night. Philadelphia didn't have a first-round pick in Saturday's draft after trading it to Washington in March for Adam Oates . The Flyers do hold an option on Phoenix's first-round selection, No. 23 overall, but are unlikely to use it. The Lightning get the 34th and 52nd picks in addition to Fedotenko. "We think there are five great players and we wanted to get one of them whether it's a forward or goaltender," Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said. This will be Philadelphia's highest pick since taking Mike Ricci No. 4 overall in 1990. The Flyers are reportedly interested in left wing Rick Nash with the No. 4 pick.

Customer Service Center Hockey: Flyers live to see Game 7 thanks to Primeau, Gagne Published in the Courier News on May 21, 2004 PHILADELPHIA (AP) Keith Primeau saved the Philadelphia Flyers' season. Simon Gagne gave them at least one more game. Gagne scored his second goal with 1:42 left in overtime, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals Thursday night. Game 7 is Saturday night in Tampa. The winner will play the Calgary Flames in the Stanley Cup finals, beginning Tuesday. "I need everybody around me to help. I got that tonight," said Primeau, who scored twice, including the tying goal with 1:49 left in regulation. The Flyers are seeking their eighth trip to the Cup finals, and first since getting swept by Detroit in 1997. The Lightning, in the playoffs for just the third time in the franchise's 12 seasons, have never reached the Cup finals. After Lightning goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin made several outstanding saves in the extra period, the Primeau-Gagne-Jeremy Roenick line struck again in their first game together.

Dave Andreychuk's presence on the ice and in the dressing room has meant a lot to the Lightning. Andreychuk helps complete
Lightning's revival
By Chuck Gormley
Special to NHL.com
May 25, 2004
Dave Andreychuk, gray in the beard but young in the eyes, gazed into the crowd, a wide grin creasing his wrinkled face. His time ...... finally ...... had come. Twenty-two years. One thousand, five hundred, ninety-seven games. Zero trips to the Stanley Cup Final. Until now. As the final seconds ticked away in the Tampa Bay Lightning's pulsating 2-1 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh and deciding game of the Eastern Conference Final, sheer joy filled the 40-year-old warrior from Hamilton, Ontario. "Obviously, you dream about this day to happen," said Andreychuk, who makes his first trip to the Final this week against the Calgary Flames. "You don't know how you are going to feel. I don't know, I don't feel relief. I feel excitement more than anything else. I feel excitement for what has happened to our club, and the improvement we have made in the last three years, and everybody in that locker room should be proud of the situation we are in."
