Just prior to the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Bobby Clarke pulled off one of the most surprising trades of the summer. He dealt third-line winger Ruslan Fedotenko to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the fourth overall pick in the draft. The move was surprising because the draft basically contained four elite prospects, and most NHL GM's believed that the cost to acquire a pick in the top four would be substantially higher than a third-line winger. That all said, Feaster made the move to acquire Fedotenko and Clarke used the pick to draft Joni Pitkanen, a supremely talented Finnish defenseman. This season, Pitkanen gets his opportunity to make an impact on the Flyers' blueline, and many observers expect him to compete for the Calder Trophy as the NHL's best rookie. The 20-year-old Pitkanen has great size (6'3", 202 pounds), explosive skating ability and excellent puckmoving skills. He will likely get the opportunity to play in all game situations in Philadelphia, and could be the team's #1 defenseman before he reaches his 22nd birthday. The rest of the flyers' defense will be comprised of Kim Johnsson, Eric Desjardins, Marcus Ragnarsson, Eric Weinrich and Chris Therien.
