Saturday, June 5, 2004 Eight is the magic number to Flames
CALGARY, Alberta You have to win four rounds to lift the Stanley Cup, right? Well, if the Flames beat the Lightning tonight and become perhaps the most unlikely champions in NHL history, they will have won eight. Maybe they should have their own octopus. NHL NOTEBOOK: Tortorella: Flames feeling the heat now
CALGARY, Alberta Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella stopped short of calling it a guarantee, but he gave an optimistic view of the Lightning's itinerary Friday. "We feel the best thing for us is to stay here, not travel after Game 6, so you get your maximum rest, the right rest," he said. "We will be having breakfast here Sunday, and then we will get on to Game 7." Friday, June 4, 2004 Flames on brink of another Cup
NHL ROUNDUP: Sutter stands by bias comments
TAMPA Darryl Sutter stuck by what he said. "I told the truth," the Flames coach said Thursday before Calgary beat Tampa Bay in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals. "The truth hurts. Not everything you read or hear is fact or fiction, but when you tell the truth, sometimes it hurts." Thursday, June 3, 2004

Flames close in on Stanley Cup

Thanks to Jarome Iginla's stamina and Oleg Saprykin's second effort, the Calgary Flames are one victory away from a Stanley Cup their coach insists nobody outside of Canada wants them to win.
Lightning's Khabibulin tough in net, cools Flames

Nikolai Khabibulin has never had a bigger save - he may have saved the Tampa Bay Lightning's run to the Stanley Cup.
Flames blank Lightning for 2-1 lead in Cup finals

One trend is developing in a furiously played Stanley Cup final: the first team to one wins. Chris Simon put in his own rebound after a period and a half of frantic, physical but scoreless play and Calgary's fighting Flames took the series lead by beating Tampa Bay 3-0 in Game 3 Saturday night.

CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) Darryl Sutter's acquisitions are starting to pay dividends. Ville Nieminen scored the go-ahead goal with 10:44 remaining and fellow newcomer Marcus Nilson tallied twice, leading the Flames to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators. Acquired on February 24 from Chicago, Nieminen raced down the right side after Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips could not keep the puck in the Calgary zone. Nieminen avoided a diving pokecheck by a Senators defender and flicked a shot over goaltender Patrick Lalime It was his fourth goal of the season and second in as many games. "I was on the boards and was able to beat their defenseman to the puck and drove to the net," Nieminen said. "Shean Donovan was yelling a me, 'Nemo, Nemo, behind.' I almost yelled back at him, 'My turn to try now.'" Nilson added an empty-netter with eight seconds left to cap his first two-goal game of the season. He was held without a point against Edmonton on Tuesday, the day after he was obtained from Florida.

    By Larry Wigge

For years, it looked like Shean Donovan was just a relatively nondescript NHL player. You know the kind. Hard-working and gritty, but ... "It wasn't unusual for me to go 20, 30 games without scoring a goal," Donovan laughed earlier this season. He still scores in streaks, but Shean Donovan is definitely not nondescript. In Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, it was Donovan who used his great speed to drive to the net as defenseman Steve Montador moved in to beat San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov for the winner with just 1:17 left in the first overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 4-3 victory.

Hockey NHL Carolina Hurricanes vs. Calgary Flames Thursday Dec 11, 2003 (Carolina 0-Calgary 1) Box score CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) Shean Donovan keeps scoring and the Calgary Flames keep winning. Donovan scored 1:45 into the third period and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 23 shots as the Flames stretched their home unbeaten streak to five games with a 1-0 blanking of the Carolina Hurricanes. Two nights after his six-game goal-scoring streak was stopped, Donovan resumed his tear. He put a rebound of defenseman Robyn Regehr's slap shot past goaltender Kevin Weekes for his 10th goal in eight games. Donovan, who notched a hat trick in Sunday's win over Pittsburgh, made a great individual play to get the game's lone goal. After Regehr's shot was stopped, Donovan beat defenseman Sean Hill to a loose puck, dived and chipped it over Weekes' shoulder. "I was pretty lucky there because I didn't even see it go in," Donovan said. "It kind of got a little air-time somehow. I just turned around and it was in."

Playing the last game of a four game road trip is never an easy task. Especially when you're playing one of the more hard working teams in the National Hockey League, the Calgary Flames. At the Pengrowth Saddledome tonight the Flames did their best impression of a yo-yo, and no matter when and how they were down, they came right back up. The Canucks started off the game slow, and seemed to not find their legs, except for Dan Cloutier who was again, absolutely brilliant in goal for the first half of the game. Dan made a key 2 on 1 save off of Matt Lombardi, which could arguably be his best save of the year. He kept the game scoreless until the top line struck to open the scoring with Brendan Morrison tallying one of his hat trick goals. Then on the PowerPlay Markus Naslund threaded the needle by finding Mo on the back door play with a beautiful pass, for Morrison's second consecutive goal. A defensive breakdown allowed the Flames to climb back into this game, as Shean Donovan beat Dan Cloutier with a nifty move and backhanded it into a gaping net to close the Flames within a goal. Although 12 seconds later, the rookie, Ryan Kesler netted his first career NHL goal, with a quick snap shot that caught the far post and beat Jamie McLennan. From there on the Canucks seemed to lay back, and the Flames really took it to them, outplaying, outworking, and outchancing the Canucks, as they rattled Dan Cloutier as well by continuously running him, and getting him off his game. Their strategy worked, as Dan didn't look very good on the next 2 goals by the Flames, and before the Canucks could have anything to say about it, the game was once again deadlocked at 3.
