New Week, Same Streak
Leafs down Rangers, Bruins and Red Wings...
Don't look now, Leaf critics, but the Buds are on an eight game winning streak and only two points out of first place in the Eastern Conference. As if winning five in a row after an abysmal road trip wasn't good enough, the Blue and White exploded for 16 goals in their past three game in racking up six points against the Rangers, Bruins, and Red Wings. Not to say that the Leafs are Stanley Cup bound, there is still more work to be done. After all, out of all the division leaders, only Los Angeles has scored less than Toronto's 79 goals, and from the same pool, only Atlanta has given up more than the Leafs 70 markers. No, they aren't home free yet, but it sure feels good to drive down the highway with the wind blowing in your hair like they are now.
Next up were the Boston Bruins, who had gotten off to a very quick start to the season but were slowly coming back to earth. This was a fairly close game for two periods with the Leafs holding a 2-0 edge heading into the third thanks to a pair of powerplay markers by Joe Nieuwendyk and Tie Domi in the first and second periods respectively. Both teams hit with aplomb and traded chances throughout the first 40 minutes of play. The third period, however, was another story. Joe Nieuwendyk counted once again on the powerplay by batting a Mat Sundin rebound out of mid-air to count the third goal at 7:25 and things went rapidly downhill for the Bruins from there. Less than a minute later Bryan McCabe blasted one through goaltender Felix Potvin to make it 4-0. Darcy Tucker then tallied twice on the same shift later in the period to put the game on ice, a 6-0 shutout victory.

Battle For Ontario
A Battle of Ontario to kick off the Playoffs: Which version of the Senators will show up to face the Leafs?
Well, there's nothing like ending the season on a sour note, is there? A victory at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs was all that was needed to lock up the Northeast Division title and assure the Ottawa Senators of divisional home ice advantage throughout this year's highly anticipated NHL playoffs. Instead, the Sens blew the match 6-0 and cost themselves dearly. The result was a third place finish in the division and fifth place in the conference. Now, the first stop in the playoffs is a series with the club they've fallen to three consecutive times in Stanley Cup play, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Ottawa's final four games were entirely typical of the 2003-04 campaign: a Jekyll and Hyde routine that left fans either bursting with delight or reeling in frustration. Victories over Tampa Bay, Florida and Philadelphia depicted a team that was ready to roll through the playoffs with ever increasing momentum. However, that critical final game against Toronto erased all of those good feelings. Fans are left wondering how far the Sens will go in this highly competitive playoff season.
Maybe Muckler Should Have Traded For A Goalie
Most unsettling of all, there seems to be a goaltending crisis brewing in Canada's capital. Just when Patrick Lalime looked to have found his game, he went down with a knee injury. Head coach, Jacques Martin, summoned backup Martin Prusek who looked to be up to the challenge until he stunk up the joint against Florida. He was also pulled in last Saturday's fiasco against Toronto. Reports have it that Lalime is skating and should be ready sometime soon. Even with Lalime back between the pipes, he has not inspired the kind of confidence that you'd expect from someone who is supposed to be a Stanley Cup contending puck-stopper.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Shtalenkov could start for some teams." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 191) "Will probably never be a starter, but is among the league's top backups. Quick and agile. Has had success everywhere he's played. Can handle the puck with aplomb. He has to earn his playing time as the Ducks have stuck with Hebert as their No. 1 goalie." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 194) "After being acquired from Edmonton, Shtalenkov provided the Coyotes with the perfect backup for fellow Russian Khabibulin . Despite a failure to take over the No. 1 role with Oilers, he remains a valuable commodity. Shtalenkov seems perfectly suited for a backup role. He tends to play well even after long stints on the bench, and his attitude is excellent. Shtalenkov will team with Khabibulin to form one of the NHL's best goaltending tandems. Even if he shines in his new role, it's unlikely that he has any future as a front-liner." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 210)

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"The Leafs were so impressed with Fichaud's work in the pre-season that they signed the Potvin clone to a four-year contract before returning him to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec League. In his first preseason game, he played 30 minutes against the Montreal Canadiens and stopped 25 of 26 shots. As they did with Potvin, the Leafs will likely send Fichaud to St. John's after his junior career ends. "And if he plays like Potvin did, we've got a problem," said Leafs' assistant GM Bill Watters. "But it's a nice one."" (Ken Campbell, The Hockey News Future Watch 1995)

New Jersey Devils is largely the same as the one that skated off with the Stanley Cup trophy last season. With a solid top four on defense and goalie Martin Brodeur, one of the best of all time, Igor Larionov and Erik Rasmussen will compensate the departures of Joe Nieuwendyk and Jim McKenzie in the front line. Philadelphia Flyers have signed veteran goaltender Jeff Hackett to replace Roman Cechmanek, who wasn't nearly as good in the playoffs last season. "Our whole organization feels that Jeff Hackett will give us the solid and steady goaltending that we will need to make a run at the Stanley Cup," said Flyers general manager Bob Clarke.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Enthusiastic Hrudey retires with no regrets San Jose Sharks' goaltender Kelly Hrudey traded in his goalie mask and pads for a microphone. He called it an even swap. Hrudey, 37, closed the book on his 15-year NHL playing career when he announced his retirement on July 30, 1998. But he planned to stay real close to his beloved sport by working as a color commentator for Hockey Night in Canada. "I have no formal training (in broadcasting), but I sure enjoy it," Hrudey said. "I'm going to tackle this as enthusiastically as I have my hockey career." Hrudey, who also played for the New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings, announced his retirement after the Sharks acquired goalie Steve Shields from the Buffalo Sabres. "I have no regrets," Hrudey said at the time. "My retirement is a celebration, not a sad event." The venerable netminder posted a career record of 271-265-88 (wins-losses-ties) and a goals-against-average of 3.43 with 17 career shutouts. He played in the Stanley Cup final in 1993 with the Kings and stopped 73 of 75 shots to lead the New York Islanders to a dramatic 3-2, four-overtime Game 7 victory over the Washington Capitals in the 1987 playoffs. Despite such a long and storied tenure in the NHL, Hrudey said the most memorable moment of his entire career came at the very start. "The No. 1 highlight (was being) told I had made the New York Islanders (in 1983). What a thrill that was! They were four-time defending Stanley Cup champions. I remember going out in the parking lot and raising my arms in the air like in the movie 'Rocky', at the top of the stairs."
