LCS: Guide to Hockey
Team Quebec
by Howard Fienberg, Correspondent
Issue 109, December 9, 1998 A new report out of Ottawa recommends that Quebec should have its own hockey team to compete on the international stage. Wales and Scotland have teams distinct from the United Kingdom at the World Cup of soccer. Why shouldn't Quebec have one for the World Cup of Hockey? Because it would lose miserably, same as Scotland and Wales always do. Perhaps they were thinking of some by-gone era? Face facts. After you fill the goal, unless Mario Lemieux returned to the ice, Quebec faces a serious drop off in world class talent. Let us look at how we might fill out our prospective Team Quebec if the World Cup were in the immediate future. At forward, who would be the number one center? Pierre Turgeon. Sad, I know. He's not been quite so dynamite since he was gooned by Dale Hunter in '93. Still, he is a great set-up guy, and legitimate talent. So far, everything's rosy, and this poutin has the making of some good french fries. Also gunning up front would be Vincent Damphouse, Luc Robitaille, Joe Juneau, and Claude Lemiuex. Uh oh, trouble: Lucky Luc, Vinny, and Pepe le Peu are all on the slide. So let's add a little cheesesome youth: Alexander Daigle (underachieving), Pascal Rheume, Rene Corbet (no scoring possibilites) and Vincent Lecavalier (unproven). For good measure, add some gravy, in Claude Lapointe and Marc Bureau to kill penalties, and Gino Odjick to drop the gloves.

For those of us not lucky enough to live in an NHL city, getting autographs can indeed be a challenge. Writing to players and asking them to sign a card or two has become an effective means for obtaining hockey autographs. What follows is a listing of players that sign through the mail, things to keep in mind when writing to players, potential problems that may be encountered, and my personal insider tips to "assist" your hockey autograph success via the mail. Be sure to check out the following pages as well: Stadium Directory - Contains all NHL team addresses. Addresses - Contains all college, minor and junior hockey team addresses. Retired Players - Where to write to some former NHLers.

Strange Days This is just a hockey site, but the enormity of the events of September 11th can hardly be left unaddressed even here. We were extraordinarily fortunate that the great number of friends, family, and colleagues we have, living and working in New York City and suburban Washington, all escaped harm, some by a hair's breadth. Many of those people can't say the same of their own friends and colleagues, and that dark day has deeply affected us here at Above and Beyond Hockey , and continues to affect us.
American National Red Cross American Red Cross in Greater New York Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund ... United Way of New York City Another little-mentioned casualty of September's disaster is every other charity and humanitarian cause you can name, each one of which has been all but ignored in the time intervening while worthy, well-intentioned, and necessary donations have poured in for distribution by groups like those listed above. Whatever cause you normally support is therefore even more in need of your contributions than it was before September 11th. So, y'know, don't forget about them: save the whales, save the wolves, help fight Alzheimer's, help fight breast cancer, support your local battered women's shelter, support your local abandoned animals shelter, give to UNICEF, give to the March of Dimes, preserve historic buildings, preserve wilderness wetlands whatever. The terrorists would rejoice in knowing that they inadvertantly dealt a setback to your favourite good cause as well.

I would re-sign Alexei Kovalev, Martin Straka, Darius Kasparaitis, Bob Boughner, Johan Hedberg, Hans Jonsson, Aleksey Morozov, Wayne Primeau, Josef Beranek, Dan LaCouture, Rene Corbet, Ian Moran, and J-S Aubin. That would give you 4 steady lines: Kevin Stevens - Mario Lemieux - Aleksey Morozov Radek Dvorak - Martin Straka - Alexei Kovalev Josef Beranek - Michael York - Wayne Primeau Dan LaCouture - Rene Corbet - Krzysztof Oliwa And 3 solid defensive pairings: Janne Laukanen - Hans Jonsson Darius Kasparaitis - Bob Boughner Tomas Kloucek - Andrew Ference And with Johan "Moose" Hedberg in goal the Penguins will fly. In , as in every sport, there comes a time when the great players, and the not so great players, decide to leave and hang up their equipment for the final time. These become the retired, and in some minds, the legends. What you will find here is a list of players that have played their all, and are now retired from . They are listed by year, and they are shown with the last franchise that they had the honor of playing for.
Listed with each player is their last position played. If a player has a " P " beside their name, that means they were on the team's "Prospect List".
* If you notice any retired players that are back in NHL2, or should be back in NHL2, please notify the Commissioner immediately.
