Tuesday, May 11, 2004 PRAGUE Matt Cooke helped Canada win its second straight world hockey title, 45 years after his hometown team gave the country its last consecutive titles.
Cooke, from Belleville, Ontario, scored the last goal in Canada's 5-3 comeback victory over Sweden on Sunday in a rematch of the final last year in Helsinki - also won by Canada.
"Winning the gold is huge," Cooke said.
Cooke, a 25-year-old Vancouver Canucks forward, was first credited with the goal that tied it at 3-3 in the second period, 52 seconds after Dany Heatley, who finished the tournament as top scorer, cut Sweden's lead to 3-2. The tying goal was later awarded to Rob Niedermayer.
"They gave it to Robbie," Cooke said, "but it doesn't matter who got the goal."

PRAGUE - Matt Cooke helped Canada win its second straight world hockey title, 45 years after his hometown team gave the country its last consecutive titles. Cooke, from Belleville, Ontario, scored the last goal in Canada's 5-3 comeback victory over Sweden on Sunday in a rematch of last year's final - also won by Canada in Helsinki, Finland. "Winning the gold is huge," Cooke said. The 25-year-old Vancouver Canucks forward was first credited with the goal that tied it at 3 in the second period, 52 seconds after tournament scoring champion Dany Heatley cut it to 3-2. "They gave it to [Rob Niedermayer], but it doesn't matter who got the goal," Cooke said. "What matters is here," he said, pointing to the gold medal hanging around his neck. "This is my best experience ever." In 1959, the Canadian amateur champion Belleville McFarlands won Canada's last consecutive world titles in Prague, when the championships were played indoors for the first time.

Rob Niedermayer of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim raises his arms to celebrate the goal scored by Matt Cooke, right, of the Vancouver Canucks against Sweden in the Hockey World Championships title game.
Canada claims gold again The Associated Press PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Florida Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester scored the winning goal, and Canada rallied to beat Sweden, 5-3, for the second consecutive year in the gold-medal game at the World Hockey Championships. Canada has won the world title a record 23 times, tying the Soviet Union-Russia. The last time Canada managed back-to-back titles was 1958-59. Sweden lost for the first time at this year's tournament. "It hadn't been done since 1959 and it's great," Canada captain Ryan Smyth of the Edmonton Oilers said. "It tops off the NHL season a bit better and helps finish the year off right. "We got better every game and here we are, very proud."
