Background/Acquired Cooke played for the Kingston Frontenacs and Windsor Spitfires of the OHL from 1995- 1998. He was the usual callup during the 1999-2000 season, bouncing from Vancouver and Syracuse of the AHL for 2 years of his carrer. He became a regular on the Canucks lineup in 2000-2001 season. Cooke is a player that you wouldn't want to play against. He's just a rat out on the ice and he annoys players like crazy. That's a good thing for Canucks fans, but a bad thing for the opposing hockey club.

The Vancouver Canucks hosted the two Alberta teams to open their regular season, and unfortunately for the Flames and Oilers, they weren't very good hosts. Matt Cooke scored twice in the first period, and Jiri Slegr added one in the second, as the Canucks defeated the Edmonton Oilers by a 3-0 score at GM Place before another sellout crowd.
The Oilers never threatened in the game and went for 9 with the man advantage on the night. The Canucks went for 8 themselves, but did manage a shorthanded goal on Slegr's effort, which Cooke also assisted on.

Matt Cooke! I love him! And so do we all. (Meghan) Anyway...As I said before, when a scanner is available, my page will improve. I need to find a better picture of Cookie anyway...Well, Matt din't play too much this season, but when he did, I think he didn't look out of place at all. He might be small but he plays agressively, which I like. He can score, too, as he demonstrated in junior. The most memorbale thing about Matt Cooke was his first impression on me. In a preseason game v.s. Edmonton, he DECKED the Oliers goalie (Bob Essensa? Steve Passmore?), and subsequently got into a fight with an Oilers player. Not bad for a rookie. I think that impressed everybody and helped him make the team under Mike Keenan. beating out players like Josh Holden and Peter Schaefer. I also have a cute and funny little story about Cookie and Billy Muckalt, which you can read here.

    March 3rd, 2003 - Cheetah, Canucks HQ

Matt Cooke played an important role in Canucks' victory The Canucks played the Boston Bruins in their second game of their Eastern road swing. The Canucks came out dry in the first period where the Boston Bruins were able to carry most of the play and were also able to score the period's only goal, by Glen Murray. The ice would tilt the other way in the second period, the Canucks were the team to carry most of the play. Trevor Linden tied the game at 1 a piece early in the second period. The Canucks would go on to score 2 more goals in the second period, first Trent Klatt followed by Matt Cooke. The ice would then tilt back to the other end during the third period. Boston was able to answer back with two goals early in the 3rd period to tie the game up at 3-3. The Canucks would answer back with 2 goals of their own. Matt Cooke scored his second of the night followed by Todd Bertuzzi's 37th goal of the season. The Canucks led the game 5-3 at that point, but the Boston Bruins just wouldn't go away. With just over 2:00 left in the game, the Canucks were called for a penalty. The Bruins pulled Jeff Hackett for the extra attacker, making it a 6on4 powerplay. They would capitialize with 7 seconds left in Letowski's penalty, making things interesting going into the last minute of play.

    Cooke's Here To Stay
Matt Cooke has established a crucial role for himself with the Canucks...
Now entering his fourth full season in the National Hockey League, Vancouver Canucks winger Matt Cooke has become one of the team's most important players. Cooke worked his way on to the Canucks roster for good in the 1999-2000 Season after being called up from Syracuse of the American Hockey League. When he first got to the NHL, Cooke was a grinding forward. Canucks general manager Brian Burke commented on how Cooke's game has progressed.
"Originally, he was just a pest," Burke told the Vancouver Sun. "He's a hard-working obnoxious player, a wolverine is the analogy I've used about him before. And he acquired a skill which adds value. He learned to kill penalties with proficiency."
The 25-year-old from Belleville, Ont. has been more than just a responsible defensive minded grinder for the Canucks. Cooke has rediscovered part of his offensive game that he had in his junior days in Windsor. Each year he has suited up for the Canucks, Cooke has put up career high numbers. Last season he finished with 42 points (15 goals, 27 assists) and an impressive plus- 21 plus/minus rating. Cooke was fourth on the team for forwards in scoring last season behind the top line of Markus Naslund, Todd Bertuzzi and Brendan Morrison.
"And he has supplemented that (defensive work) with pretty good offensive numbers," Burke to the Vancouver Sun. "You would have to call him a two-way forward now instead of a pest. I think he has been a very valuable part of our team's improvement. He's an excellent person, too."
