May 11, 2004 By JEFF MILLER and MIKE HEIKA / The Dallas Morning News
First in a three-part series. Debate about the role of violent play in hockey is older than the NHL itself. It resurfaced this year after a fist-fest between Philadelphia and Ottawa on March 5 resulted in an NHL-record 419 penalty minutes. It intensified after Vancouver star Todd Bertuzzi attacked Colorado rookie Steve Moore on March 8. The criticism usually fades with time. Fans have consistently delivered a message that they like fighting and hard hitting. But the debate over safety in the sport has continued in Canada even during the playoffs, when fights are usually mothballed because each victory is so important. Last month, Canada's national

Pavel gossip line
Summarized from PBFC May 1994 newsletter
  • It just doesn't get any sweeter than this, hockey fans. Picture this: your team has fought back from a 3-games-to-1 deficir and it's the second overtime period of the seventh game of the Stanley Cup play-off series against the hated Calgary Flames. You're in all alone on red-hot goaltender Mike Vernon, you deke right, pull the puck to your left and slide it around the sprawling netminder for the 4-3 win. Yeeeoww!
  • Let's briefly recap the Pavel season: the Rocket missed six weeks of eight November games with a slight tear in the abductor muscle (groin injury), battled the flu in late November and early December, went through 18 game stretch in spring with only four goals and then unloaded big time with 49 goals in his final 51 games.
  • After only three seasons in the NHL, Pavel now has 154 goals and 123 assists for a total of 277 points in only 224 games. Of the more than 275 players on the Canuck all-time point scoring list, Pavel is now listed 13th (he started the season in 27th place).

When I was a kid (most likely sometime between '80 and '82) I saw a Montreal/Hartford game in Montreal. A player from Hartford took a shot on net that was deflected up into the audience and he hit his wife in the face with the puck (purely accidental I'm sure :joker: )
Does anyone else remember this event or who the player was? bleedgreen Maybe a Whaler's fan can help me remember this - its been bugging me for awhile!

FROM THE FEBRUARY 21, 1996 ISSUE
Gretzky's future up in air; New York seems unlikely
DAWN TAYLOR
Daily Beacon Staff Writer
The future of hockey icon Wayne Gretzky has generated a lot of speculation over the last few weeks. Will he join Brett Hull in St. Louis and add to his already astronomical career points total? Will he join buddy Mark Messier in New York for the Edmonton Revival tour? Will he change his colors and become a Broad Street Bully? Or will he join Disney in their attempts to take over the NHL and star in Anaheim? At this time, Gretzky is still in Los Angeles, playing for a team that is going nowhere fast. He said that he is willing to stay in L.A., if the owners will go out and get the support he needs for another run at the Stanley Cup. But at this point, it doesn't look like that is going to happen. General Manager Sam McMaster has made some moves to change the team, but at this time the changes are not working. The longer this goes on, the more one realizes that it will take more than Kevin Stevens or Shane Churla to suit Gretzky. Gretzky wants superstars. Gretzky wants big name talent. Gretzky wants the Stanley Cup. Gretzky wants all of this now. And as in the past, what Wayne wants, Wayne gets. Geez, where is Gordie Howe when you need him?
