Boyle, Lightning avoid arbitration
By BRANT JAMES, Times Staff Writer The Lightning agreed to a one-year, $850,000 contract with 26-year-old defenseman Dan Boyle on Tuesday, leaving center Vinny Prospal as the club's final arbitration-eligible player. The Lightning agreed to a one-year, $850,000 contract with 26-year-old defenseman Dan Boyle on Tuesday, leaving center Vinny Prospal as the club's final arbitration-eligible player. Boyle, whose hearing was scheduled Friday, scored five goals and had 20 points in 41 games with Tampa Bay after being acquired from the Panthers in January for a fifth-round selection in the 2003 draft. "Everybody wants to avoid arbitration, especially since I had a couple of tough years in Florida," Boyle said. "We were trying to concentrate on the second half in Tampa Bay, which went well. There's no promise what will happen next year, but the fact the coaches showed some confidence in me gave me a boost." Boyle, an offensive-minded defenseman, impressed the team with his aptitude in transition and on the power play. "He brings a dimension to the team we were lacking," general manager Jay Feaster said. "He can take it behind the net and carry it out and he's a threat to rush up ice. Clearly, he's a guy who brings the offensive dimension and a bit of a riverboat gambler in that regard."

Despite getting the first goal, the Vancouver Canucks gave up three goals in the first but battled back over the course of the game to snatch a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning Wednesday evening at GM Place, snapping a three game losing streak.
Despite all the talk about getting off to a better start, Tampa Bay took it to the Canucks in the opening minutes of the game. Dan Cloutier had to be sharp early, on a couple of Vancouver giveaways in their own zone. His best save coming off Martin St. Louis who was all alone in the slot.

MONTREAL (CP) - Dan Boyle and Brad Richards scored in the second period as the Tampa Bay Lightning completed a sweep of the Montreal Canadiens with a 3-1 victory in the NHL playoffs on Thursday night. The Lightning advanced to the Eastern Conference final for the first time in their history by taking the best-of-seven conference semifinal in four straight games. "I think as you go through trying to get 16 wins to win a Stanley Cup you need to have some time to heal," said Lightning coach John Tortorella." To get a series done four straight second round certainly going to help us because we have some guys banged up." They will meet either Toronto or Philadelphia in the next round. Frederik Modin scored an empty-net goal with 56 seconds left in the game. Niklas Sundstrom scored for Montreal, which was swept for the first time since losing four in a row to Buffalo in the 1998 conference semifinal.
