Goalies In The Spotlight
Thus far this season, goaltending has been the primary story...
Goalies are arguably the most important part of any NHL team, so it should not come as much of a surprise that many of this season's most intriguing story lines have involved goaltenders. From the surprising play of unheralded goalies like Brian Boucher and Miikka Kiprusoff to the disappointing showings of highly-compensated keepers like Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Marty Turco, to the three-headed monster that is the Detroit Red Wings' goaltending situation, the men in the masks have dominated the headlines.
Where else to start but with the remarkable Boucher? The proud owner of just seven career shutouts entering this season, the Coyotes' goalie broke an NHL record with his fifth consecutive shutout last week. Boucher passed Montreal goalie Bill Durnan's mark of 309:21, set way back in 1949.
Boucher had success early in his career with the Philadelphia Flyers, but they gave up on him and traded him to Phoenix after the 2001-02 season. He started this season as a third-stringer behind veterans Sean Burke and Zac Bierk and was even left exposed in the waiver draft. An injury to Bierk opened the door for Boucher to see some action as Burke's backup, and he has been shutting the door on the opposition ever since. Boucher's run has put the Coyotes right back into the playoff mix in the West, and they are now within striking distance of the Pacific division-leading San Jose Sharks.

A Week In The Life Of The Los Angeles Kings...
If what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, the Kings just may emerge as the strongest team in the league by season's end. This past week brought a perplexing mix of both bad and good to the club. Already beleaguered by injury and inconsistent play, the Kings this week added to their list of wounded and watched their cross-town rivals, The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, catapult past them in the Pacific Division standings on the heels of a 4-1-1 streak. However, the Kings also found themselves in second place in the Pacific following a big division win against Phoenix.
The Good: The Kings welcomed back defensemen Aaron Miller and Mattias Norstrom and forward Mike Cammalleri from injury. All three were activated from the injured list on Thursday prior to the Kings game against the Vancouver Canucks. Miller had been sidelined since training camp with a broken wrist, while Norstrom was lost opening night when he sustained a chest contusion. Cammalleri had sprained his left MCL in a preseason game against San Jose. The trio played that evening, and both Miller and Norstrom played close to twenty minutes while Cammalleri played only twelve.

Phoenix Finally Wins : I'm man enough to admit I picked the Coyotes as my sleeper team. And they are kind of sleeping. They just wrapped up a 15 game winless streak. Geez. Meanwhile,...... , posted on February 27, 2004 more Comrie Rocking the West Again : The Coyotes are very psyched about Mike Comrie. He missed Tuesday's practice but was able to make it for last night's game against the Ducks. Comrie looked sharp as hell, too. He was dishing the puck like he was doing...... , posted on February 12, 2004 more Burke a Flyer; Comrie a Coyote : Geez. After all the denials and the rumors and the intrigue, Phoenix goalie Sean Burke is a Flyer. The Flyers also got forward Branko Radivojevic and prospect Ben Eager. In return, Phoenix got Mike Comrie. Slave to the Grind OK. So Phoenix's Zac Bierk has been kicking around the NHL (and IHL and ECHL) for a while. So it isn't anything new, but I still love the fact that his brother is Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. And I really love that Bach told Sports Illustrated , "It blew me away to see Wayne Gretzky trying to score on my little baby-faced brother and failing...I'm stoked, man!" after Bierk's first NHL win back in 1998.
Phoenix loves Bierk's low salary and lower GAA (
And number one goalie Brent Johnson can't let in enough goals
. It's pretty bad there. Even his teammates are starting to talk about his goaltending).
Sadly (and oddly, for a goalie), Burke is a team leader . So trading him won't be a clean break for the team. But Phoenix can't be too picky. They need to get stoked, man. Posted by Steven Ovadia on Friday, February 21, 2003, 08:34 AM What Wood Al Use? The Free Press says wooden sticks are out . Now all the kids love graphite. It turns just about everyone into a superstar. But not everyone loves composite sticks. Al MacInnis won the All-Star Game's hardest shot competition with a wooden stick
MacInnis switched to a composite sticks last year, but switched back to wood this year. The Blues probably appreciate that. Wooden sticks are a lot cheaper. And MacInnis isn't alone in his love of wood. Besides beavers and termites, who also enjoy wood, about 15% of the NHL still uses wooden sticks. The most common reason for using wood? "It gets me stoked, man!"

Russian Prospects Great Sites Burke on the Move? writes " According to Spector's, a newspaper out of Arizona is saying that Sean Burke is most likely to be on the move. The team reportedly wants to get rid of $4.5 million dollars of their payroll. This may mean something for Sean Burke. First of all, they are loaded on good quality goaltenders, and one will be on the move. What has stuck his head out of the woods? His $4.5 million dollars payroll, and of course, he is a goalie. It was a hope for them to have Boucher been picked up at the waiver draft. He wasn't so he is still rightfully theirs, meaning they will now shift their attention to the other goaltenders. Besides Burke and Boucher, the goaltender that is part of the problem, is Zac Bierk. The team had released that he will be kept as their back up for sure. Bierk is a local player to me. He lived here for most of his life, and my brother was good friend's with his Zac's brother, so I had talked to him time to time. He was the hit goaltender headed into the NHL when he was drafted. Over his career, he has been with Tampa, were he began his career, Detroit, Minnesota, and now currently with Phoenix.

WHY RICK HEINZ FOR A GOALIE SCHOOL?
Our teaching methods systematically break down each skill, followed by demonstration, proper instruction and repetition. Skill development is enhanced by allowing goaltenders to use these skills in game situations.
Now with our NEW IMPROVED PROGRAM, goalies will challenge themselves using the skills they have learned against equally adapted shooters in real game situations. The results are a more positive, confident student who enjoys more success in a fun environment. GOALTENDING STYLES?
Our objective is to expose goalies to all the current styles used by the NHL that make them successful. With the variety of styles available today, we encourage goalies to experience, learn and develop a style that works best for them! REGULAR FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS PROGRAM BASICS
