From the surprising play of unheralded goalies like Brian Boucher and Miikka Kiprusoff to the disappointing showings of highly-compensated keepers like Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Marty Turco, to the three-headed monster that is the Detroit Red Wings' goaltending situation, the men in the masks have dominated the headlines. Where else to start but with the remarkable Boucher? The proud owner of just seven career shutouts entering this season, the Coyotes' goalie broke an NHL record with his fifth consecutive shutout last week. Boucher passed Montreal goalie Bill Durnan's mark of 309:21, set way back in 1949. Boucher had success early in his career with the Philadelphia Flyers, but they gave up on him and traded him to Phoenix after the 2001-02 season. He started this season as a third-stringer behind veterans Sean Burke and Zac Bierk and was even left exposed in the waiver draft. Slave to the Grind OK. So Phoenix's Zac Bierk has been kicking around the NHL (and IHL and ECHL) for a while. So it isn't anything new, but I still love the fact that his brother is Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. And I really love that Bach told Sports Illustrated , "It blew me away to see Wayne Gretzky trying to score on my little baby-faced brother and failing...I'm stoked, man!" after Bierk's first NHL win back in 1998.
